Brazil international Alexsandro evokes Lille future

Alexsandro (25) has bolstered his reputation in recent weeks. After a successful season in the UEFA Champions League and Ligue 1 with Lille OSC, the centre-back has now made the step up to the international stage. Alexsandro was handed his first call-up by Carlo Ancelotti for the recent international break. His name was previously not on the radar, however, not only has he now made his debut, he has started both of Brazil's games and now looks to be in contention to be a regular starter for the Seleçao. Advertisement Speaking after his second match for Brazil, a 1-0 win over Paraguay, Alexsandro was grateful to his club. 'When I came on the pitch, I really think about my team (Lille), my President (Olivier Létang), and my teammates… I played for them tonight,' he said in a post-match interview transcribed by L'Équipe. The defender then went on to evoke his future with LOSC. 'It depends on President Létang. You'd have to ask him. I am calm and not in any rush to leave. He will decide my future,' said the centre-back. As per Foot Mercato, Lille are indeed anticipating interest in Alexsandro, as well as his centre-back partner, Bafodé Diakité, this summer. One of them could leave the club, therefore, during the summer transfer window. GFFN | Luke Entwistle

Lille president confirms Bruno Genesio's position

Lille OSC fans can rest easy knowing their popular manager will return next season. Club president Olivier Létang confirmed that Bruno Genesio would remain in his post, telling L'Équipe, 'Bruno is under contract. We're very happy. He will be our coach next season.' Lille ended the 2024-25 Ligue 1 campaign fifth in the table, one place below where they wound up finishing in the previous campaign but claiming one more point this time around. Even though he's under contract with Les Dogues until 2026, it wasn't a certainty that he'd return for the 2025-26 season. Advertisement Génésio helped them reach the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, but his side missed a chance at the quarter-finals. They squandered an early one-goal advantage in the second leg against Borussia Dortmund in a 2-1 defeat, losing that tie 3-2 on aggregate. Their top goal scorer, Jonathan David (25), along with Angel Gomes (24), Samuel Umtiti (31), and Rémy Cabella (35), will be among those leaving in the summer. While they will be in the UEFA Europa League next season, Lille finished outside a Champions League qualification place on goal difference to OGC Nice. The 58-year-old replaced Paulo Fonseca as Lille's manager in June 2024 signing a two-year contract. Prior to his appointment, he'd been out of coaching for over six months after being sacked by Stade Rennais in November 2023. GFFN | Joel Lefevre

OM : Medhi Benatia suspended for three months

Former Moroccan international Mehdi Benatia, now serving as the director of football at Olympique Marseille, and Olivier Létang, president of Lille OSC (LOSC), have received their verdicts following a provisional suspension by the French Football Federation (FFF) last week. Benatia faces a three-month suspension with an additional three months suspended, while Létang has been handed a one-month suspension with another month suspended, according to a report by « L'Équipe ». These substantial penalties are already stirring controversy. Benatia, who had already been suspended after an altercation with referee Bastien in September (resulting in a six-match suspension, three of which were suspended), was penalized for his conduct during the OM-Lille match on January 14. At the end of the game, Benatia harshly criticized fourth official Clément Turpin for not awarding a penalty to OM, who were trailing 1-0 at the time. His actions resulted in a red card and further reprimands, with the committee noting the «vehement attitude» of the former Moroccan international defender. On the Lille side, Olivier Létang was sanctioned for an uncharacteristic move: descending from the stands to grab the arm of the fourth referee, urging for the end of added time, which crossed the line of acceptable conduct. OM reacted swiftly, announcing their intention to appeal the decision, labeling the penalty as «disproportionate». In a sharp statement, the club asserted that «the images showed that there was no threat», highlighting that the FFF delegate present at the hearing corroborated this view. «Convinced of the unjust nature of this decision, we will go all the way to the administrative courts if necessary», the club declared, viewing this as a «relentless attack» on Benatia. The situation now lies with the FFF. In the interim, Benatia, a key figure in OM's sporting strategy, will have to remain off the pitch.
