OECD cuts global GDP forecast amid tariff uncertainties, increase in trade barriers
Trade policy under US President Donald Trump is taking a major toll on global growth. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has cut its GDP forecast for this year and the next to below 3%. It has warned of an even weaker outlook, should it see a further rise in protectionism. The OECD's chief economist also said a "significant increase in trade barriers" and uncertainty caused will lead to "weakened economic prospects" all around the world. British PM Starmer unveils defence spending plans for 'warfighting readiness'
The UK is set to release a key defence review, which aims to ensure that its armed forces is ready and able to fight in a modern war. The assessment will warn of an "immediate and pressing" threat from Russia, as well as the "sophisticated and persistent" challenge China poses to British interests. The UK's existing fleet of nuclear-powered attack submarines will be expanded, with a new model developed with Australia under the AUKUS security pact that also includes the US. Cardinals fail to elect a new pope after their first vote
Cardinal electors who are gathered in Vatican City have failed in their first vote to pick a new pope. Black smoke rose from a chimney above the Sistine Chapel, indicating that the conclave will continue until a successor for the late Pope Francis is found.
