MLB rumors: How Mets, Phillies ‘stunned' rivals with trade deadline bombshells
The post MLB rumors: How Mets, Phillies 'stunned' rivals with trade deadline bombshells appeared first on ClutchPoints. The MLB trade deadline market is heating up with less than 12 hours to go. Eugenio Suarez is off the market, returning to the Seattle Mariners, putting all eyes on the pitching market. The New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies made trades for much-needed relievers and paid a lot to get them. Buster Olney has the latest on what the Ryan Helsley and Jhoan Duran returns mean for the trade deadline market. 'The amount given up for relievers by the Mets and Phillies stunned rival executives, and the assumption within the industry is that this will embolden the potential offloaders in the last hours before the trade deadline,' Olney wrote for The Mets picked up Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley for three prospects, two of which landed among St Louis' top 15 prospects. Duran went from the Minnesota Twins to the Phillies for two of their top-six prospects. Duran is under team control through 2028, while Helsley is a free agent after this season. That led to the price difference between the two pieces. The MLB trade deadline will undoubtedly see more relief pitchers moving. Olney lists Pirates' closer David Bednar, Angels' closer Kenley Jansen, and Twins setup man Griffin Jax among the top options remaining. Meanwhile, the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Detroit Tigers, and Los Angeles Dodgers are looking for bullpen arms. Teams that are trading a reliever with team control should be holding out until the final minute. While the market is heating up as 6 p.m. Eastern approaches, the bullpen pitchers could be the last pieces moved. Teams are not going to be quick to send out their top prospects for a bullpen pitcher until they absolutely have to. The MLB trade deadline is at 6 p.m. on Thursday, and ClutchPoints has you covered all afternoon long. Will your favorite team make a move? Learn from ‘our Scandinavian neighbours' about crises and war, ministers urged
Ministers have been urged to learn about crisis planning from 'our Scandinavian neighbours', where authorities have handed out pamphlets about preparing for war and emergencies. Pat McFadden said national resilience against crises, built through 'dialogue with the public', was 'a little bit less normal in this country' than it is elsewhere. The Cabinet Office minister spoke to MPs after the Government unveiled plans for a national drill later this September when mobile phones will ring out with an alarm during an emergency alert system test. But Sarah Olney warned that in a real emergency, digital alerts 'will miss millions' of people who do not have access to a phone.'While the Liberal Democrats welcome the alert test, we would also call for a wider public information campaign to ensure that the public are properly ready for any potential future conflict or disaster that will support resilience-building across the UK, and perhaps take some lessons from, for example, our Scandinavian neighbours,' she warned. 'They are always working towards potential future threats, providing information to their citizens, and this kind of information should be provided through a number of different means, including leaflets and traditional broadcast. 'And while we welcome the alert test, as I said, websites and text alerts will miss millions of British people, people without phones, without signal, without battery, so we need to be ready on all fronts and not just rely on these single text alerts.' The Lib Dem Cabinet Office spokeswoman asked whether the Government would 'launch a national awareness campaign which draws upon different modes of contact'. Ms Olney told the Commons: 'The world is less stable and more insecure now than at any time since the Cold War, and consequently the Government must ensure that the British people and the United Kingdom are prepared in the event that our country or an overseas territory is threatened.' Authorities in Sweden have published a pamphlet titled In Case Of Crisis Or War, with a message to Swedish citizens that they 'live in uncertain times'. It features information about air raids, an outdoor warning system including sirens, and seeking 'food that is filling, energy-rich and that can be stored safely at room temperature'. A similar guide from Norway's civil protection directorate sets out that 'the Norwegian authorities recommend that as many people as possible be prepared to be self-sustained for one week'. Responding to Ms Olney, Mr McFadden said information about the emergency alert system would be 'publicised well in advance, not just through the test itself but in advance including working with domestic violence charities and other people so that everybody knows what is coming'. He added: 'I do agree with her that dialogue with the public on this is important. In many other countries, this is absolutely normal. Perhaps it's been a little bit less normal in this country, but I think we should change that.' The Cabinet Office team 'scans the horizon constantly for these things', Mr McFadden said as he promised that the Government was 'always prepared and ready to go'. Liberal Democrat Scotland spokeswoman Christine Jardine asked whether ministers had 'given any thought to perhaps a more old fashioned way of perhaps sirens or some other way of alerting the public when there's an emergency'. Mr McFadden said a mobile phone system was a 'significant addition to our armoury as the coverage gets better'. The emergency alert system will be tested at around 3pm on September 7, its second-ever nationwide drill. During the test, the UK's approximately 87 million mobile devices will ring out with a high-pitched alarm and vibrate for approximately 10 seconds, while a message will appear on the screen making it clear the notification is only a test. Alex Burghart, Conservative shadow Cabinet Office minister, had earlier said: 'It is understandable that faced with the collapse of the economy and collapse of Government, with capital flight, spiralling borrowing costs and the OBR (Office for Budget Responsibility) this morning warning that the Chancellor's latest U-turns have left Britain more vulnerable and less able to respond to future crises, that the Government would want to come forward with a plan.' He said ministers' resilience efforts did not 'deal with widespread industrial action', including in healthcare, and asked: 'Is the Government planning for the eventuality of a general strike?' Mr McFadden replied that the Government had 'made a very fair pay offer' to NHS workers. 'We very much value the work that doctors do, but hope that everyone in the NHS realises that we are a Government that supports the NHS, wants to work with the staff and that industrial action will not do anything to contribute towards that goal,' he added.

‘Good riddance': Yankees executive glad to see Rafael Devers out of AL East (report)
Red Sox fans aren't happy that Rafael Devers is gone, but the Yankees sure are. ESPN MLB insider Buster Olney revealed on 'Sunday Night Baseball' reactions from around the sport, including a text he received from a New York Yankees official. Advertisement 'Glad he's gone. Yankee killer,' the anonymous executive reportedly wrote. Olney said a member of the Yankees texted, 'Good riddance. Thank God, because this guy murders us.' Boston officially announced the blockbuster trade of its 28-year old star on Sunday. The deal sent Devers to the San Francisco Giants for left-handed pitcher Kyle Harrison, right-handed pitcher Jordan Hicks, minor league outfielder James Tibbs III and righty pitcher Jose Bello. The Giants will take on all of Devers' salary, about $255 million over eight-plus seasons. Tibbs, ranked as San Francisco's No. 3 prospect (and the 13th pick in last year's draft), was at High-A Eugene in the Giants system but will go to Double-A Portland, while Bello is currently in Rookie ball. Advertisement Devers is batting .272/.401/.504 with 15 home runs and 58 RBIs this season. His last home run as a Red Sox player came against the Yankees on Sunday. '(MLB execs) are absolutely stunned at how quickly this came together,' Olney said on the 'Sunday Night Baseball' broadcast. More Red Sox coverage Read the original article on MassLive.

Cubs' Jed Hoyer Named Among MLB Execs Under Most Pressure
Cubs' Jed Hoyer Named Among MLB Execs Under Most Pressure originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer has not shied away from the media when talking about his team's approach at the MLB trade deadline. After all, the team is 44-28 and just 1.5 games back from the top record in all of baseball (the Detroit Tigers at 46-27). Advertisement But a banged-up and struggling starting rotation, and a continuous need to improve to stay at the top of the standings, has put Hoyer in a situation where the general feeling among analysts is that he must be aggressive at the trade deadline. ESPN's Buster Olney is one of those analysts. In fact, Olney has named Hoyer among six other MLB executives under the most pressure at the trade deadline. "The question for Hoyer is not whether the Cubs will make the playoffs (their playoff chances, per FanGraphs, is 88.5%), but what will make them more dangerous in the meaningful games they're bound to play at the end of the season," Olney said. Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer speaks to the media during the MLB General Manager's Meetings at Omni Scottsdale Resort & J. Rebilas-Imagn Images So then, how do they address the need to become more dangerous? Olney named three starting pitchers who could help put Chicago over the top. Advertisement The Baltimore Orioles' Zach Eflin, who is 6-2 with a 4.08 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP, but is 31 years old, was named as an "upgrade" to Ben Brown and Colin Rea. But the Arizona Diamondbacks' Merrill Kelly was described as a "perfect fit," while Zac Gallen was listed as another option. Kelly has a 3.41 ERA in a team-leading 87 innings pitched. However, Olney says there may be one crucial roadblock to getting a deal done for a player considered to be a star or at least a major upgrade. "The Cubs' payroll is well under the luxury tax threshold -- 12th highest in the majors... Rival evaluators wonder if Cubs ownership will green-light the sort of pricey acquisition that could help this team compete for its second title in the past decade," Olney said. Advertisement One positive: Hoyer has previously been allowed to make big trades that have brought in multiple players who are now key pieces to the team. Olney Chief of Police tapped to lead Vernon Police Department
VERNON (KFDX/KJTL) — The Vernon Police Department has a new face, hiring a familiar one from another Texoma city as its new Chief of Police. On Monday evening, June 9, 2025, the Vernon City Commissioners held a special meeting to discuss the hiring of a new police chief. After just under an hour in executive session, commissioners voted unanimously to hire Dan Birbeck as the new head of the Vernon Police Department. READ MORE: Olney Police Chief Dan Birbeck to see three more years in office Chief Birbeck is a familiar face to residents of Olney, where he's served as the city's chief of police since 2020. Soon, he'll head to Vernon, assuming the same role in a place well known to him and his family. 'I started out as a police officer out in Quanah, Texas, many years ago,' Chief Birbeck said. 'This is where my wife's family is from, Quanah and Vernon, and when the opportunity became available with the opening of the police chief's position, I talked to my wife about it, and we thought this would be a very good fit for us.' Just because the decision may be the best for Chief Birbeck and his family, however, doesn't mean it's an easy decision to make. 'Olney is a very special place,' Chief Birbeck said. 'There's a lot of amazing people there. This is very much a bittersweet decision for myself and for my wife.' Chief Birbeck said the last five years serving as Olney's Chief of Police have been some of the most rewarding years of his career in law enforcement. 'As the police chief there, I was welcomed with open arms,' Chief Birbeck said. 'We've done some amazing work over the last five years. We reduced the crime rate significantly, by some accounts over 65 percent, and that's attributed to a great team we've put together.' Chief Birbeck said that although the decision to leave Olney is a bittersweet one, he's still excited for what's to come in Vernon. 'This is just another step up the ladder,' Chief Birbeck said. 'You know, closer to home for my wife and, obviously, a larger agency and more opportunity.' Chief Birbeck said he's ready to hit the ground running and make a difference in the city of Vernon. READ MORE: City of Olney officials name fourth police chief since 2017 'The first thing I wanna do is do a full assessment of the police department and talk to the command staff at the police department,' Chief Birbeck said. 'I'll be leaning on them to get a full picture of the needs of the department and of the city.' The next step for Chief Birbeck is to turn in his resignation in Olney, which he said he intended to do on Tuesday morning, June 10. After that, he said he's expecting to be set up in Vernon within the next 30 days. 'I'm looking to do great things and build great teams,' Chief Birbeck said. 'We should see a lot of good come from it.'Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
