Representative image YAMUNANAGAR: The Yamunanagar district police's efforts and robust legal advocacy have led to the conviction of a 59-year-old man, Om Chandra alias Chandgi Ram of Sadhaura, for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old minor girl. The additional district and sessions judge (ADSJ) Ranjana Aggarwal, sentenced him to 20 years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 in a case registered under Sections 65 (2) (punishment for rape) and 351 (3) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 6 (punishment for aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the POCSO Act at Sadhaura Police Station. The case dates back to August 29, 2024, when a woman from a village under the Sadhaura police station area reported an incident of sexual assault with her minor daughter. The woman alleged that her 12-year-old daughter had gone to dispose of garbage outside their home but did not return for some time. After a frantic search, the mother heard her daughter's screams near a cattle shed owned by the convict, located close to the village's sports stadium. Upon reaching the shed, she found the gate locked from the inside. When she raised an alarm, Om Chandra opened the gate and fled. Following the complaint, a case was promptly registered under relevant sections of the BNS and Pocso Act. The investigation, led by women's assistant sub-inspector Sharmila, was thorough and meticulous, incorporating scientific evidence and strong legal groundwork. Under the guidance of district SP Kamaldeep Goyal, the police's Operation Conviction Monitoring Cell ensured rigorous follow-up and advocacy in court. The case was presented before the court of ADSJ Ranjana Aggarwal, where the prosecution's compelling arguments and evidence led to the conviction of Om Chandra. On July 24, 2025, the court delivered its verdict, sentencing the accused to 20 years in prison and a Rs 50,000 fine. The Yamunanagar police spokesperson hailed the verdict as a testament to the district police's commitment to justice, particularly in protecting vulnerable children. Yamunanagar: A court here has sentenced a 59-year-old man to 20 years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl. Additional district and sessions judge Ranjana Aggarwal on Thursday convicted Sadhaura resident Om Chandra alias Chandgi Ram under sections 65 (2) (rape) and 351 (3) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 6 (aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the POCSO Act. The case dates to Aug 29, 2024, when a woman from a village under Sadhaura police station alleged that her daughter had gone missing and she rescued her from the cattle shed owned by the convict, after hearing her cries from a distance. The woman had alleged that the man had attempted to sexually assault her, but she was rescued before. The man had fled when the woman raised the alarm outside his shed. A spokesperson for Yamunanagar police said assistant sub-inspector Sharmila had carried out the probe, and meticulous arrangement of evidence had helped in the quick conviction and sentencing of the man.
