Nama Group electricity companies showcase key energy sector strategies and initiatives
Muscat: At its annual media briefing on Tuesday, Nama Group's electricity companies presented their strategic achievements and future initiatives supporting Oman's energy transition, carbon emission reduction, and sustainability goals. Said Khalaf Al Abri, Director General of Planning and Project Development at Nama Power and Water Procurement, said that the company reported significant progress in renewable energy projects, including tenders for two major solar plants: the 500 MW Ibri 3 Solar Station and the 280 MW Al Kamil Solar Station, both slated for award in 2025. He noted the completion of prequalification for five wind energy projects across Oman, with requests for proposals issued for two. All five projects are expected to be awarded this year, advancing the nation's wind energy sector. Al Abri added that the company aims to raise contracted renewable energy production to 65% of total capacity by 2030, with investments exceeding RO 1 billion. On his turn, Eng. Sultan Ahmed Al Rawahi, Director General of the Load Dispatch Center at Oman Electricity Transmission Company, highlighted the commissioning of 116 electrical substations (including 17 operating at 400 kV) and achieving 99.9999% grid reliability. He pointed out that Nama Electricity Distribution Company manages an advanced 100,000-km distribution network with 48,000 distribution stations and 720 substations, serving over 1.35 million subscribers across all governorates except Dhofar. The company has converted 75% of traditional meters to smart meters, targeting full coverage by Q4 2025. This reduced electrical losses to under 8% for the first time in the sector's history. He added that the company inaugurated a smart grid pilot in the Wilayat of A'Seeb to integrate remote control systems and fault detection at the main control center, enhancing operational efficiency and reliability. Meanwhile, Salim Said Al Kamyani, CEO of Nama Electricity Supply, outlined new digital initiatives enabling real-time transaction tracking, daily consumption monitoring via mobile app, auto-top-up for prepaid accounts, and electrical load management. Eng. Ali Issa Shamas, CEO of Nama Dhofar Services, said that the company reported 99.7% water network reliability, production of 22 million cubic metres of treated water (99% quality), and an 84% smart meter conversion rate. He explained that the company awarded tenders worth OMR137 million, including rural electrification projects to replace diesel generators and achieve carbon neutrality. Sewage network coverage in Salalah is projected to rise from 76% to 95% in 2025, he affirmed.

Oman: 7 bidders qualified for $2bln Misfah and Duqm IPPs
Muscat: Nama Power and Water Procurement (PWP), the exclusive procurer of power and water in the Sultanate of Oman, has named seven qualified applicants to participate in a tender for the development of two major Independent Power Projects (IPPs) – Misfah IPP and Duqm IPP – which represent a significant step in securing the Sultanate of Oman's future energy needs. Total investment in the IPPs, with a combined generation capacity of 2400 MW, is estimated at RO 880 million. A total of 12 Statements of Qualification were received from international companies. Following a thorough evaluation process, 7 applicants have been successfully qualified to participate in the upcoming tender. They are: ACWA Power Company, Korea Western Power Co Ltd, Marubeni Corporation, Nebras Power, Sembcorp, Utilities Pte, Shenzhen Energy Group, and Sumitomo Corporation. These qualified bidders come from a variety of countries, notablyKSA, Kuwait, UAE, Qatar, India, South Korea, Japan, Qatar, Singapore and China.
