75 UP jails to get gyms to boost well-being of inmates
1 2 3 4 Lucknow: To promote physical and mental well-being of inmates as part of the state's broader reformative agenda, UP govt has approved proposal to open gyms in 75 jails across the state, besides one at the Dr Sampurnanand Jail Training Institute in Lucknow, said P V Ramasastry, DG, prisons. For the fiscal year 2024–25, state govt sanctioned Rs 1.9 crore for the project. The installation of equipment in all the identified facilities is expected to be complete soon. According to officials, this innovative effort reinforces the state's commitment to rehabilitative and health-centric correctional practices. "Physical fitness is a key component in mental and emotional rehabilitation of inmates and gyms on jail premises will help inmates channel their energy positively, reduce stress and contribute to a more disciplined jail environment," said Ramasastry. Another officer said the development aligned with ongoing transformation of UP's prison system under the Yogi Adityanath-led govt. From vocational training under the One Jail One Product (OJOP) scheme to infrastructure upgrades and health-focused reforms, the prison administration is focusing increasingly on constructive rehabilitation rather than mere confinement. The open gym initiative is expected to not only enhance inmate morale but also reduce idleness, thereby contributing to a safer and more productive prison environment. Officials confirmed similar reform-oriented programmes could be launched in future phases, building on the success and feedback from this first-of-its-kind state-wide open gym installation drive.
