Lucknow: To promote physical and mental well-being of inmates as part of the state's broader reformative agenda, UP govt has approved proposal to open gyms in 75 jails across the state, besides one at the Dr Sampurnanand Jail Training Institute in Lucknow, said P V Ramasastry, DG, prisons.
For the fiscal year 2024–25, state govt sanctioned Rs 1.9 crore for the project. The installation of equipment in all the identified facilities is expected to be complete soon. According to officials, this innovative effort reinforces the state's commitment to rehabilitative and health-centric correctional practices.
"Physical fitness is a key component in mental and emotional rehabilitation of inmates and gyms on jail premises will help inmates channel their energy positively, reduce stress and contribute to a more disciplined jail environment," said Ramasastry.
Another officer said the development aligned with ongoing transformation of UP's prison system under the Yogi Adityanath-led govt. From vocational training under the One Jail One Product (OJOP) scheme to infrastructure upgrades and health-focused reforms, the prison administration is focusing increasingly on constructive rehabilitation rather than mere confinement.
The open gym initiative is expected to not only enhance inmate morale but also reduce idleness, thereby contributing to a safer and more productive prison environment. Officials confirmed similar reform-oriented programmes could be launched in future phases, building on the success and feedback from this first-of-its-kind state-wide open gym installation drive.

Rs 16 Crore For A Smile? Why This Actress Got Her Mouth Insured

Last Updated: Actress Cynthia Erivo insured her mouth for Rs 16 crore! From her iconic smile to vocal power, here's why it's being called one of Hollywood's most precious smiles You've likely heard of health or travel insurance, but Oscar-nominated actress and singer Cynthia Erivo has taken it to a whole new level. She's insured her mouth for an eye-watering $2 million (approximately Rs 16.5 crore)! Now, what makes her mouth so valuable? The Face Of Listerine's 'Wash Your Mouth' Campaign Cynthia Erivo is currently the ambassador for Listerine's new 'Wash Your Mouth' campaign, and she takes oral hygiene seriously. She credits her distinctive smile and powerful voice as key components of her identity, both professionally and personally. She reportedly brushes and uses mouthwash religiously before stepping on stage, saying her oral care routine gives her confidence. But the insurance policy isn't just about her hygiene habits; it's about protecting her trademark gap-toothed smile and vocal power, which are central to her brand. The Celebrity Trend Of Insuring Body Parts While this might sound eccentric, Cynthia Erivo is far from the first celebrity to insure a body part. In fact, it's something of a trend in Hollywood: Clearly, when your body is part of your brand, insurers are willing to put a value on it, sometimes an enormous one. A Smile That's Making Headlines While it's unlikely Cynthia Erivo will ever need to make a claim, the move certainly grabs attention. With her dazzling voice and iconic smile, she now holds the unofficial title of Hollywood's 'most valuable smile." view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
