PETALING JAYA : A 26-year-old man claimed trial in the Muar magistrates' court today to causing the death of a two-year-old in a crash on the North-South Expressway (PLUS) in May. Ong Kai Wei, a badminton coach, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him before magistrate Suzana Mokhtar, Berita Harian reported. Ong is accused of driving a multipurpose vehicle recklessly and causing the death of Ayesha Sofea Anwaruddin, who was a passenger in a car. The offence was allegedly committed at Km144.9 of the PLUS highway, near Muar, at about 7.35am on May 26. The charge was framed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for up to 10 years in jail and a maximum RM50,000 fine upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Nur Amieerah Alludeen prosecuted, while Ong was represented by lawyer Siti Nurashikin Fuaddin. Ong was allowed to post bail at RM5,000 but had his driving licence suspended pending the disposal of the case. The court fixed Aug 20 for case mention.

MUAR: A badminton coach who allegedly caused a fatal crash that claimed the life of a two-year-old girl in May was charged at the Magistrate's Court here today. Ong Kai Wei, 26, claimed trial after the charge was read before Magistrate Suzana Mokhtar. He is accused of recklessly driving a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that collided with a car carrying a family of three, resulting in the death of two-year-old Ayesha Sofea Anwaruddi. The incident took place at Kilometre 144.9 of the North-South Expressway (northbound) at 7.35am on May 26. Ong was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years, a fine of up to RM50,000, and disqualification from holding or obtaining a driving licence for not less than five years, upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Nur Amieerah Alludeen prosecuted, while Ong was represented by lawyer Siti Nurashikin Fuaddin. The court allowed bail at RM5,000 and fixed Aug 20 for mention and document submission. The court also ordered Ong's driving licence suspended pending the outcome of the case. In the crash, Ayesha Sofea succumbed to her injuries after two days in the intensive care unit (ICU) at the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital. The impact had forced the family's car off the highway and into a guardrail after being struck by the MPV.
