OPELIKA, Ala. (WRBL) — A Union Springs teenager has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Jamiyah Grant in an Opelika park Saturday night. Opelika Police confirm 18-year-old Timothy Shell Jr. was taken into custody Sunday, June 8, and charged with murder. The arrest follows a deadly shooting at Bandy Park on June 7 around 8:30 p.m. According to investigators, a group of people had gathered in the park when an argument broke out. Moments later, shots were fired, and Grant was struck. Officers arrived to find her suffering from a gunshot wound. Police say she tried to drive away but collided with another vehicle before being rushed to East Alabama Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead. Shell was identified as the suspected shooter during the initial investigation and arrested by Opelika Police detectives the next day. Authorities say the case remains active. Opelika, Ala. (WRBL) – A 16-year-old Opelika girl was shot and killed Saturday night at George C. Bandy Park, where hundreds of people were gathered for an annual Alumni Day celebration. Jamiyah Grant was struck by gunfire during the large community event and transported by EMS to East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika. Despite emergency resuscitation efforts, she was pronounced dead at 9:34 p.m., according to Lee County Coroner Daniel Sexton. 'This was supposed to be a joyful night. Instead, a young girl lost her life,' one attendee told WRBL. The Opelika Police Department is investigating the events leading up to the shooting. As of Sunday morning, no arrests have been made, and the motive remains unclear. Sexton confirmed Grant's body will be transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for a postmortem examination. OPELIKA, Ala. () — The Opelika Police Department is asking for the public's help identifying two individuals believed to be connected to a hotel theft that occurred in late April. According to investigators, around 10:00 p.m. on April 21, 2025, an unidentified man and woman entered a hotel in Opelika and stole a suitcase containing approximately $500 worth of personal items. The name of the hotel has not been disclosed as the investigation remains active. Surveillance footage captured images of the suspects. The first individual is described as a white female with long red or strawberry blonde hair. She was wearing a white and tan striped tank top, blue jeans, and black boots at the time of the incident. The second individual is described as a white male with a mustache. He was seen wearing a white and gray hat, a white long-sleeved shirt with a large blue 'S' on the front, blue jeans, and black sneakers. The pair left the scene in a blue 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe. Authorities say two males entered the store and stole more than $500 worth of merchandise before leaving the scene. Surveillance footage shows one suspect wearing an orange collared shirt, a black jacket, and blue jeans. The second suspect is seen wearing glasses, a black facial mask, and khaki pants. Six-year-old child killed in deadly Opelika crash, investigation ongoing

OPELIKA, Ala. (WRBL) – A tragic two-vehicle crash in Opelika claimed the life of a 6-year-old child Monday evening. Lee County Coroner Daniel Sexton confirmed Kingston Burns, of Beauregard, was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:58 p.m. CT. The crash occurred around 5:25 p.m. on Marvin Parkway. Opelika Police, Opelika Fire, and EAMC EMS responded to the scene and attempted resuscitation efforts, but they were unsuccessful. At approximately 5:23 p.m., Opelika dispatch received a call about a multiple-vehicle crash in the 3500 Block of MarvynParkway. Upon arrival, officers located two vehicles, a Kia K5 and a GMC Acadia, thatappeared to have crashed head-on. The Kia was occupied by two adults and two juveniles. One juvenile was pronounced deceased at the scene and the other juvenile passenger was transported via Life Flight to Children's of Alabama in Birmingham. The driver and adult passengerwere transported via ambulance to Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital in Columbus, GA. The driver of the GMC Acadia along with a juvenile passenger were transported via a personal vehicle for further treatment. The crash remains under investigation by the Opelika Police Traffic Homicide Investigation Unit.
