Six-year-old child killed in deadly Opelika crash, investigation ongoing
Lee County Coroner Daniel Sexton confirmed Kingston Burns, of Beauregard, was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:58 p.m. CT. The crash occurred around 5:25 p.m. on Marvin Parkway.
Opelika Police, Opelika Fire, and EAMC EMS responded to the scene and attempted resuscitation efforts, but they were unsuccessful.
At approximately 5:23 p.m., Opelika dispatch received a call about a multiple-vehicle crash in the 3500 Block of MarvynParkway. Upon arrival, officers located two vehicles, a Kia K5 and a GMC Acadia, thatappeared to have crashed head-on. The Kia was occupied by two adults and two juveniles. One juvenile was pronounced deceased at the scene and the other juvenile passenger was transported via Life Flight to Children's of Alabama in Birmingham. The driver and adult passengerwere transported via ambulance to Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital in Columbus, GA. The driver of the GMC Acadia along with a juvenile passenger were transported via a personal vehicle for further treatment.

The Lee County Coroner's Office will transport Burns to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for a postmortem examination. Opelika Police are investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash.

4 suspects linked to burglaries at Chicago businesses, police say; ATMs targeted or taken
Chicago police are looking for a group of four suspects they say are linked to multiple business burglaries on in the city that have targeted or taken ATMs. Police said in at least three incidents, the group have broken into stores by breaking the front glass window or door, then rummaged through the businesses to take property from inside. In one burglary, they stole a mobile ATM and a cash register, police said. In the second incident, they stole bottles of liquor and tried to take the mobile ATM but weren't able to. In each case, the suspects fled the scene in a 2018 white Kia SUV Sorrento that had been reported as stolen. The burglaries linked to these suspects happened on: Chicago police said in a fourth burglary in Evergreen Park involved suspects that matched the description of these suspects and their vehicle, but they have not formally connected it to the previous three incidents. Police had only a vague description of the burglars, saying they appear to be between 16 and 20 years old and wore black hooded sweatshirts, dark jeans and black ski masks. Boy trapped under car saved when witnesses gather to lift it, Florida cops say
A boy seen being 'dragged' under a slow-moving car was rescued when witnesses teamed up to lift the vehicle, according to investigators in Florida. The boy was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover, the Volusia Sheriff's Office said in a news release. It happened around 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, on the first day of school in Deltona. 'The 14-year-old had been riding his bike to a private school, traveling east along Howland Boulevard on the sidewalk, when he approached Roble Lane,' the sheriff's office said. 'As the victim crossed Roble Lane in the crosswalk, the driver of a Kia Soul entered the crosswalk at a low speed attempting to turn onto Howland Boulevard. The vehicle struck the victim, dragged him about 15 feet, and stopped with the victim trapped under the vehicle.' Witnesses, including a tow truck driver, rushed to the car and worked together to 'lift the vehicle and move the victim to safety.' Investigators did not reveal how many people were needed to lift the Kia, which weighed nearly 3,000 pounds. 'The victim was wearing a helmet. Although injured, he was still conscious on scene,' officials said. 'Air One transported him as a trauma alert to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, where at last check he was in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.' The boy was riding an electric bike, or e-bike, which 'can travel faster than traditional bicycles,' the sheriff's office said. Investigators did not report details of charges in the case, and the driver's identity was not released. Deltona is about a 30-mile drive northeast from Orlando.

Lafayette city council candidate arrested, denies harvesting ballots
LaFAYETTE, Ala. (WRBL) – Andrew Vines, a candidate for LaFayette's District B city council seat is facing multiple misdemeanor allegations related to Alabama's ballot harvesting laws after investigators say he illegally collected and mailed in absentee ballot applications for voters in his district. According to the Chambers County Sheriff's Office Vines was arrested Friday, August 8, following a weeks-long investigation into reports first made in mid-July. Monday, Vines told WRBL in a phone interview he is innocent. 'I've been falsely accused. Around 60 people in my district applied for absentee ballots and needed assistance with the applications — not the ballots themselves. They signed their own applications. I brought them blank applications, and they filled them out. I did assist some with answering questions, which I am allowed to do. I also prepared the envelopes.' The case began when investigators say a voter went to LaFayette City Hall and told the clerk Vines had filled out their absentee ballot application, had them sign it, and then took the form to mail it. The Chambers County District Attorney's Office called in the Sheriff's Office to investigate. Captain Jeff Hinkle says multiple witnesses told investigators Vines went door-to-door in his district with absentee ballot applications, either encouraging residents to apply or filling them out for them. Some alleged he even signed voters' names before taking the applications to mail. Investigators say they found around 50 envelopes with the same handwriting, along with evidence to support 15 misdemeanor counts of mailing in ballots for others, 11 misdemeanor counts of filling out ballots for others, and four misdemeanor forgery charges for signatures. Vines says according to Alabama Code § 17-11-4(b)(1), 'Any applicant may receive assistance in filling out the application as he or she desires, but each application shall be manually signed by the applicant, under penalty of perjury, and if he or she signs by mark, the application shall also include the name of the witness and the witness's signature.' Alabama law allows absentee voting only for specific reasons, such as being out of town on Election Day, illness, or physical disability. It is illegal to distribute pre-filled absentee ballot applications or to submit an application on behalf of someone else, except in limited medical emergencies. 'I'm not off the ballot, I haven't been proven guilty, and I didn't do anything wrong. My main goal has always been to make sure everyone in my district has the chance to vote. On Election Day, if anyone needs a ride, I will provide it — as I have always done,' said Vines. Under state law, misdemeanor charges do not disqualify a candidate from running for office. The city's election for mayor and all five council seats is set for August 26, with voting at LaFayette High School from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. A runoff, if needed, will be held September 23.
