India poised to succeed at all layers of AI stack: OpenAI's Jason Kwon
India is becoming a global artificial intelligence (AI) powerhouse with the second-highest number of users of OpenAI's ChatGPT, a thriving community of developers that are among the top 10 countries globally building on OpenAI's application programming interfaces (APIs), the company's chief strategy officer, Jason Kwon, said. 'With the vast and growing pool of AI talent, a vibrant entrepreneurial spirit, and strong government support to expand the critical infrastructure, India is poised to succeed at all layers of the AI stack,' Kwon said. The executive was in India on Thursday as part of his global tour. On Thursday, OpenAI launched the OpenAI Academy India, the first international expansion of the company's education platform. Through the academy, OpenAI will support the IndiaAI Mission's FutureSkills pillar by expanding access to AI skills training for a wide range of learners — students, developers, educators, civil servants, nonprofit leaders, and small-business owners, the company said. Apart from this, the company will provide educational content on the government's Karmayogi platform, which aims to enhance skills and build capacity among public servants and government officials. On Thursday, OpenAI said it now supported 3 million paying business users of ChatGPT, up from 2 million in February. The company announced the launch of the beta version of Connectors, a tool that can help enterprises find granular data from their third-party tools without leaving ChatGPT. 'Additionally, deep research connectors (beta) are now available with HubSpot, Linear, as well as many popular Microsoft and Google tools. These build on Deep Research, an agent that conducts multi-step research for complex tasks, by gathering, synthesizing, and presenting information from third-party tools and the web,' the company said in a press note.

'OpenAI Academy India' launched to help expand access to AI skills
New Delhi: OpenAI, in partnership with the government's IndiaAI mission, on Thursday launched the first international expansion of its education platform, that will help expand access to AI skills training across the country. The initiative, called 'OpenAI Academy India', aims to broaden access to AI education and tools, tapping into India's fast-growing developer community, digital infrastructure, and network of startups and innovators. It will support the IndiaAI Mission's 'FutureSkills' pillar by expanding access to AI skills training for a wide range of learners — students, developers, educators, civil servants, nonprofit leaders, and small business owners. The initiative offers a combination of digital and in-person learning, tailored to India's needs and available in English and Hindi, with additional regional languages to follow. 'This is a significant step towards advancing our shared goal of democratizing access to knowledge and technology. Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is committed to ensuring that the benefits of cutting-edge innovation reach every citizen,' said Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Electronics and IT. 'We believe the latest AI frameworks and tools must be made widely accessible so that our startups, developers, and researchers can build faster, better, and at scale. The launch of OpenAI Academy will strengthen India's AI Mission by enabling greater community learning, fostering innovation, and accelerating the development of locally relevant solutions,' Vaishnaw noted. OpenAI will provide its educational content to be hosted on the iGOT Karmayogi platform, aimed at capacity building of government officials. This content will initially be in English and Hindi and will later be expanded to 4 other regional languages. OpenAI will also conduct periodic webinars and in-person workshops, delivered by its domain experts and partners in six cities. It will provide up to $100,000 worth of API Credits to 50 IndiaAI Mission approved fellows/startups. OpenAI said it will also support training of 1 million teachers in the use of Generative AI technology. 'India is one of the most dynamic countries in the world for AI development, with adoption and innovation accelerating at remarkable speed,' said Jason Kwon, Chief Strategy Officer, OpenAI. The Indian government recognises that to maximise the benefits of artificial intelligence (AI), significant investments are needed in two key areas: core infrastructure and the development of advanced AI technologies, ChatGPT maker OpenAI's chief strategy officer, Jason Kwon, said on Thursday. 'As demand for AI professionals is expected to reach one million by 2026, there's a significant opportunity and a need to expand AI skills, development and make sure people from every part of India can participate and benefit,' said Kwon at the launch of OpenAI Academy in India. OpenAI has launched its educational platform, OpenAI Academy India , in partnership with the IndiaAI Mission under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. This is aimed at expanding access to AI education and tools by leveraging India's developer community, digital infrastructure, and network of startups and innovators. 'We hope to accelerate AI learning in a few ways, including sharing knowledge on how to leverage the latest AI tools so people in India can stay at the cutting edge of global innovation…and helping build public sector know-how and training design to support government innovation,' he said. The AI model developer recently announced grants worth $150,000 for non-profit organisations in India tackling challenges in healthcare, education, agriculture, gender equity, and disability inclusion. The San Francisco, US-based company is expanding its ' AI for Impact Accelerator ' in India, under which 11 nonprofits will receive grants in the form of API credits and technical resources.

Artificial intelligence industry leader OpenAI, in collaboration with IndiaAI—a mission under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology—on June 6 officially launched OpenAI Academy India, its first international rollout of an AI education platform. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has also been signed between OpenAI and IndiaAI, setting the direction for their joint efforts. "This is a significant step towards advancing our shared goal of democratising access to knowledge and technology... We believe the latest AI frameworks and tools must be made widely accessible so that our startups, developers, and researchers can build faster, better, and at scale," said IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Training, access and support The academy aims to make AI education and tools more accessible across India, building on the country's rapidly growing developer community, strong digital infrastructure, and vibrant startup ecosystem. The initiative will also include regular webinars and in-person workshops led by OpenAI experts and partners in six major Indian cities. Additionally, OpenAI will grant up to $100,000 worth of API credits to 50 startups or fellows approved under the IndiaAI Mission. OpenAI Academy India will support the 'future skills' initiative of the IndiaAI Mission by making AI training available to a wider audience, such as students, developers, teachers, civil servants, nonprofit leaders, and small business owners. Multilingual and multi-platform approach The programme will blend online and offline learning experiences. Initially available in English and Hindi, it will expand to include at least four regional languages. As part of this effort, OpenAI will integrate its educational materials into the FutureSkills platform. It will also offer its content on the iGOT Karmayogi platform, which is designed to enhance the skills of government employees. The company also plans to help train 100,000 teachers in the effective use of generative AI tools. OpenAI said it will conduct hackathons across seven Indian states, aiming to engage around 25,000 students. Vaishnaw added that the academy will enhance India's AI Mission by promoting community-driven learning, encouraging innovation, and supporting the creation of solutions tailored to local needs.
