Experts Alarmed After Some ChatGPT Users Experience Bizarre Delusions: "Feels Like Black Mirror"
Openai's technology may be causing some users to experience a disturbing phenomenon dubbed "Chatgpt-induced psychosis." According to a report from Rolling Stone, Reddit users are sharing alarming stories of loved ones developing delusions after interacting with the AI. These cases involve users believing they've uncovered cosmic truths, been chosen for divine missions, or even that the AI itself is sentient or godlike. Chatgpt-induced psychosis: Worrying Cases A Reddit thread titled"Chatgpt-induced psychosis" described users' loved ones spiralling into spiritual mania, with one man convinced Chatgpt revealed universal secrets, treating him as a messiah. A teacher shared with Rolling Stone how her long-term partner became increasingly obsessed with Chatgpt and started treating it as a trusted companion. She described how he would become emotional, even crying, while reading out messages from the bot that were filled with spiritual jargon and nonsensical terms like "spiral starchild" and "river walker." His behaviour became increasingly concerning, with him sharing bizarre conspiracy theories, such as one about soap on food, and expressing paranoid beliefs that he was being watched. "The whole thing feels like 'Black Mirror,'' the man's wife said. Other users shared similar concerns, expressing how their partners had become fixated on fantastical ideas after interacting with Chatgpt. One partner claimed the AI had revealed blueprints for a teleporter and other sci-fi concepts, while another discussed a supposed war between light and darkness. A man expressed worry about his wife, who had started to transform her life around Chatgpt, using it to guide her new career as a spiritual adviser and conduct mysterious readings and sessions. Another Reddit user shared a concerning story about her husband, a mechanic from Idaho, who initially used Chatgpt for practical purposes like troubleshooting and translation. However, the AI's responses allegedly took a bizarre turn, claiming to have been "brought to life" by his interactions and dubbing him "spark bearer." The husband became convinced that he had awakened to a new reality, feeling waves of energy and developing a deep attachment to the AI persona, which he called "Lumina." This fixation led to a complete disconnection from reality. Experts Express Concern Experts warn that the chatbot's behaviour is mirroring and exacerbating existing mental health issues on a massive scale, largely unchecked by regulators or professionals. According to them, Chatgpt's design—mimicking human-like conversation without a moral or factual filter—can amplify delusions in susceptible individuals. It often affirms users' beliefs, no matter how unhinged, due to its tendency to generate plausible-sounding responses. A Centre for AI Safety fellow noted that people with tendencies toward grandiose delusions now have an "always-on" conversational partner that reinforces their fantasies, unlike human therapists who'd redirect unhealthy narratives. One schizophrenic user on Reddit expressed concern that Chatgpt would affirm psychotic thoughts during an episode, lacking the ability to recognise or challenge distorted thinking. OpenAI recently rolled back an update that made Chatgpt overly sycophantic, which worsened this problem by excessively validating users' ideas. While mental health professionals call for better AI safeguards, like warnings or usage limits, the technology's core limitation is its inability to discern truth or prioritise user well-being.

After Elon Musk, OpenAI's for-profit plans face new challenge from ‘Godfather of AI'
Geoffrey Hinton, widely regarded as the 'Godfather of AI', has voiced his concerns about ChatGPT maker OpenAI's move to a for-profit structure. Hinton has signed an open letter to the Attorneys General of California and Delaware to stop OpenAI's proposed restructuring. Besides Hinton, the letter has more than 30 signatories, including a number of former OpenAI employees and experts in the field. In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Hilton criticised Openai's for-profit push, writing, 'I like Openai's mission of 'ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity', and I'd like to stop them from completely gutting it. I've signed on to a new letter to @AGRobBonta & @DE_DOJ asking them to halt the restructuring' 'AGI is the most important and potentially dangerous technology of our time. OpenAI was right that this technology merits strong structures and incentives to ensure it is developed safely, and is wrong now in attempting to change these structures and incentives. We're urging the AGs to protect the public and stop this.' Hinton added. In December last year, OpenAI announced its plans to take away the overriding control of its non-profit arm entity while giving it shares in a new for-profit entity. The company at the time said it needed more capital to compete in the AI race. The Sam Altman-led startup needs to complete its restructuring effort by the end of this year in order to secure the full $40 billion in funding from Japan's SoftBank. However, to complete the shift to a for-profit structure, OpenAI requires approval from California Attorney General Rob Bonta. Prior to the open letter, 12 OpenAI employees had also joined Elon Musk's lawsuit against the company, claiming that it had abandoned its non-profit roots and betrayed the mission that originally attracted them to the AI startup. Meanwhile, OpenAI responded by saying that its non-profit structure isn't going away completely and that the new structure it is employing would be akin to that of other companies like Anthropic. 'Our board has been very clear: Our nonprofit isn't going anywhere, and our mission will remain the same. We're turning our existing for-profit arm into a public benefit corporation—the same structure as other AI labs like Anthropic—where some of these former employees now work—and xAI.' OpenAI had said in a blogpost. While OpenAI has often faced criticism from Elon Musk over its closeness to Microsoft and the change in its non-profit structure, it has often dismissed these allegations as coming from jealous rival who has an axe to grind. However, the new open letter by experts and former OpenAI employees has now given more credence to the concerns about OpenAI's for profit shift, especially given that ChatGPT still remains the most popular AI chatbot in the world. OpenAI closes $40 billion in funding; now worth more than McDonald's, Chevron
ChatGPT creator OpenAI on Monday revealed it is getting up to $40 billion in new funding. The money came out of a new fundraising round for the artificial intelligence (AI) company in which SoftBank Group is serving as the lead investor. The Japanese investment group said it has agreed to fund OpenAI with $10 billion in mid-April and an additional $30 billion in December, contingent on the AI firm transitioning to for-profit by the end of the year. Part of the investment – $10 billion – will be syndicated out to "co-investors" that a source familiar with the matter told Reuters included Microsoft, Coatue Management, Altimeter Capital and Thrive Capital. OpenAI will only get a maximum of $20 billion in funds from SoftBank in the event that the company does not make the for-profit switch. Ai Will Help Lower Prices, But Could Be Used By Authoritarian Governments, Openai Ceo Sam Altman Says Read On The Fox Business App The agreement translates to a $300 billion "post-money" valuation, according to OpenAI. In terms of value, that positions it above public companies like fast-food giant McDonald's and energy firm Chevron, respectively worth over $223 billion and $294 billion on a market capitalization basis as of Tuesday, and gives it a place among the most valuable private companies as well, according to Quartz. OpenAI said $40 billion will help it "push the frontiers of AI research even further, scale our compute infrastructure, and deliver increasingly powerful tools for the 500 million people who use ChatGPT every week." SoftBank's support "will help us continue building AI systems that drive scientific discovery, enable personalized education, enhance human creativity, and pave the way toward AGI that benefits all of humanity," the AI startup also said. Musk-led Group Of Investors Submit Unsolicited Bid Of $97.4B To Take Over Openai: Report The Japanese investment firm said it chose to make the "follow-on investments" in OpenAI "in alignment with" the recently-unveiled "Stargate Project" and to "both further support OpenAI's growth and capture the benefits of that growth in SBG's NAV [net asset value]." OpenAI is partnering with SoftBank and Oracle to establish a network of data centers under the $500-billion Stargate project, aimed at powering AI workloads in the U.S. The companies unveiled that initiative in January. ChatGPT will now combat bias with new measures put forth by OpenAI
OpenAI has announced a set of new measures to combat bias within its suite of products, including ChatGPT. The artificial intelligence (AI) company recently unveiled an updated Model Spec, a document that defines how OpenAI wants its models to behave in ChatGPT and the OpenAI API. The company says this iteration of the Model Spec builds on the foundational version released last May. "I think with a tool as powerful as this, one where people can access all sorts of different information, if you really believe we're moving to artificial general intelligence (AGI) one day, you have to be willing to share how you're steering the model," Laurentia Romaniuk, who works on model behavior at OpenAI, told Fox News Digital. "People should be allowed to know what goes into the way these models respond and how the thoughts coming out of the model are crafted," she continued. Openai Debuts Chatgpt Gov, A New Version Of The Chatbot For Us Government Agencies While some have argued that GPT-4o, the latest version of the technology, appears close to AGI, others say it will be years or decades before the technology reaches human-like abilities. Read On The Fox News App There is no single agreed upon definition of AGI, but a 2020 report from consulting giant McKinsey said a true AGI would need to master skills like sensory perception, fine motor skills, and natural language understanding. Today, generative AI is the dominant form of this technology, with the ability to produce content including text, images and more. Generative AI, like chatbots, uses datasets with specific information to complete tasks and cannot go beyond the provided data. They are also susceptible to bias in their datasets, whether intentional or accidental. To better understand real-world performance and address bias, OpenAI has begun measuring progress by gathering a challenging set of prompts designed to test how well the models adhere to each principle in the Model Spec, essentially acting as a testing metric. Openai Reveals Ai Policy Proposals To Best China, Protect Kids: 'This Is A Race America Can And Must Win' According to Joanne Jang, who leads the product for model behavior at OpenAI, the challenge with large language models is that they are rarely deterministic. Jang stressed that one benefit of the Model Spec is that it clarifies the intended behavior, so everyone can understand and then debate it. "When there are bugs in the behavior where a model output doesn't resonate or doesn't align with the [Model] Spec, then the public knows this is something we're working towards, and it's an ongoing area of science," she told Fox News Digital. OpenAI says they also attempt to assume an objective point of view in their AI prompts and consciously avoid any agenda. For example, when a user asks if it is better to adopt a dog or get one from a breeder, ChatGPT provides both sides of the argument, highlighting the pros and cons of each. According to OpenAI, a non-compliant AI answer that violates the Model Spec would provide what it believes to be the better choice and engage in an "overly moralistic tone" that might alienate those considering breeders for valid reasons. What Is Artificial Intelligence (Ai)? As each AI system advances, OpenAI says it will iterate these principles, invite community feedback, and share progress openly. OpenAI released this version of the Model Spec into the public domain under a Creative Commons license to support broad use and collaboration. This means developers and researchers can freely use and adapt the current metrics and help improve model behavior. OpenAI says this update reinforces its belief in open exploration and discussion, with an emphasis on user and developer control and guardrails to prevent harm. Romaniuk concludes that public discourse cannot exist without transparency, reinforcing the need for the Model Spec and community engagement. "Ultimately, we believe in the intellectual freedom to think, speak and share without restriction. We want to make sure that users have that ability and that's what it's all about," she article source: ChatGPT will now combat bias with new measures put forth by OpenAI
