La Vergne makes 85 traffic stops on first day of ‘Operation Safe Streets'

LA VERGNE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The La Vergne Police Department kicked off their 'Operation Safe Streets' initiative Monday, leading to more than 80 traffic stops on the first day alone. Now through August, law enforcement in the area will be looking for speeding, reckless driving, hands-free cellphone violations, move over law compliance, and red light/stop sign violations. PREVIOUS | La Vergne announces 'Operation Safe Streets' to focus on traffic enforcement 'My message to the public is clear: when you are in La Vergne, we are going to be out patrolling and making sure people are driving responsibly,' said La Vergne Police Chief Chris Moews. 'I can tell you, preliminary data, La Vergne Police Department made 85 stops yesterday and we're looking further into that data at this point in time and we are collecting data from our partner agencies, Rutherford County Sheriff and THP.' The three agencies will be working together to address problem areas around La Vergne based on crash data and the public's input. On Monday, they focused on 11 hot spots. 'Murfreesboro Road, Industrial Road, we had Holland Ridge, and Dick Buchannan as a couple other, Mason, Chaney Boulevard were also a few of them,' Moews said. 'These were all areas that really the public spoke about and wanted us to react to and we have had some really positive reactions to our efforts.' La Vergne Police Department adds BearCat tactical vehicle to its fleet Last year, the City of La Vergne saw almost 1,100 crashes, with three of them fatal, and 183 injury crashes. 'This is not a ticket initiative, that was made clear, the discretion is given to each individual officer from each department and we just ask that they go out there and make the stops when they see the violations,' Moews added. 'We're trying to do this so that people are driving more safely during our summer months, and this is going to be something that's going to be sporadic throughout the summer on different dates and at different times. La Vergne police will also continue to take feedback from the public on problem areas they'd like to see addressed through their safe streets survey. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. La Vergne announces ‘Operation Safe Streets' to focus on traffic enforcement

LA VERGNE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Police in La Vergne have heard what residents want from the department, and they have kicked off a new level of enforcement in response. The La Vergne Police Department announced this month it would be placing 'an increased focus on traffic enforcement' based on resident concerns. As part of that effort, the LVPD announced 'Operation Safe Streets,' a multi-agency traffic safety initiative with Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office. 'Together, we are committed to making our roads safer for you and your family,' the department said in the announcement. Neighborhood News: Stories impacting your community | Read More Along with the operation announcement, LVPD published a link for a survey and asked residents to let the department know which areas of the city need more traffic enforcement and encouraged residents to complete the survey as soon as possible. 'We encourage you to complete the survey as soon as possible,' LVPD said. The survey lists 16 different street groupings residents can choose from as the ones the department needs to devote more time on enforcement. The survey asks residents to choose only three and then rank those three from highest to lowest concern. The official start of the operation will not be announced, according to police, as a way to 'ensure its effectiveness.' Do you have news happening in your neighborhood? APD chief recommits to transparency with Atlanta Citizen Review Board investigations

At a recent meeting of the Atlanta Citizen Review Board, which examines allegations of abuse by members of the Atlanta Police Department, Chief Darin Schierbaum reiterated his commitment to transparency, saying he had to be able to hold himself responsible for the department. 'There's no guessing game. I've got to be able to hold myself accountable. I have to be able to hold more of the department accountable,' Schierbaum said on April 11, while discussing reviews by the ACRB. During an extensive question and answer session with members of the board, Schierbaum said they should be able to 'expect promise and transparency from our offices.' [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Members of the ACRB asked Schierbaum about his philosophy on officer discipline. Answering, Schierbaum said that everyone there knows that 'not anyone should wear the uniform,' saying that for every 5,000 applications to join the Atlanta Police Department, only 100 get to the training center, and on average, only 70 will graduate. He said his goal is to be able to address discipline and maintain public trust through their training. As far as disciplinary actions within APD and recommendations by ACRB after an investigation, 'We know if we look statistically, the agreement rate between the department's investigating process and the ACRB, if there's been a violation, is very high.' The review board also acknowledged how difficult officers' jobs are, saying it was important to ensure a situation is handled correctly, but that officers who do their jobs the right way should be complimented, 'because that doesn't happen enough either. It's not an easy job, and there can be a lot of challenges in different ways.' However, in the same vein, the board member said it was important to address perceptions of bad attitudes of officers when they interact with the public. [SIGN UP: WSB-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]

Operation Safe Streets: DeKalb County police announce new safety checkpoints

The DeKalb County Police Department announced Friday that homicides in the county were down almost 49% but they were taking new steps to deter crime in the community. According to DKPD, they'll be deploying new safety checkpoints in 'high crime areas' to both deter crime and reduce traffic fatalities. The new strategy is being called 'Operation Safe Streets,' according to the police department. The program has already been rolled out, with a checkpoint operation on April 11. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] During the 'aggressive countywide effort' to prevent crime and reckless driving, DKPD's Special Operations Division set up on Memorial Drive near Candler Road for a two-hour checkpoint. At the checkpoint, officers screened drivers for valid driver's licenses, registration, insurance, impaired driving and equipment violations, while passing out traffic safety and educational materials. 'Whether it's reducing violent crime or preventing street racing, my administration is committed to supporting proactive policing efforts that keep DeKalb residents safe. The progress we are seeing—particularly the nearly 49% reduction in homicides compared to this time last year—is a testament to the dedication and strategic coordination of our law enforcement agencies.' Over the April 11 weekend, police made six arrests, issued 60 traffic citations and recovered 1.5 pounds of marijuana in addition to seizing multiple vehicles. DKPD said there have been 26 motor vehicle fatalities in the county this year, so far, with the main reasons being impaired driving and speeding. 'This type of operation helps us reduce crashes, identify impaired drivers, and ensure that motorists are operating their vehicles safely and legally,' Interim DKPD Police Chief Gregory Padrick. 'Our goal is not just enforcement—but prevention. We want to stop tragedies before they happen and build stronger relationships with the communities we serve.' County officials said the safety checkpoint also came after a 'successful joint Georgia State Patrol-DeKalb Police operation' that had officers infiltrate an 'organized street racing ring,' which led to 11 arrests, 10 impounded cars, recovery of guns and four people with outstanding felony warrants. Cochran-Johnson said she will do everything she can to be tough on crime in the county and that 'we have too many people living in fear of street racers, car invasions and lawless individuals,' promising to 'double down' on undercover operations. Gunfire erupts after victim run over just steps from L.A. sheriff's station

Authorities in the Antelope Valley are investigating after gunfire erupted just steps from a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Station. In a news release Wednesday afternoon, sheriff's officials said deputies responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call in the 4400 block of Beech Avenue. 'The location is a barbershop business located approximately 30 feet from Lancaster Sheriff's Station property line,' the release noted. At the location, deputies found a man suffering from serious but non-life-threatening injuries. They rendered medical aid while waiting for medical personnel to arrive and take the victim to the hospital. In the course of their investigation, deputies realized that the victim had not been shot but had been run over by a vehicle. Man, 51, allegedly shot dead by father-in-law, 83, in his Southern California home 'After the victim was run over, the suspect, who was standing in the area, fired several rounds toward the vehicle,' officials said. The suspect, who authorities did not identify, was arrested and a firearm was recovered. It is unknown if the suspect intentionally ran over the victim with the vehicle or if the vehicle was later struck by gunfire. No additional information was provided.
