Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency foils bid to smuggle out controlled items

LAHAD DATU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) foiled an attempt to smuggle out controlled items via Tanjung Batu waters. Lahad Datu Maritime Zone Director, Maritime Commander Dzulfikhar Ali, said a suspicious boat attempted to escape upon realising the presence of MMEA personnel during Ops Pluto Timur and Ops Tiris at about 10.30pm last Saturday. He said the boat was intercepted after 10 minutes of pursuit and upon inspection found two undocumented Filipinos aged between 34 and 41 on board. 'The boat was also found to be carrying 17 gallons containing petrol and 51kg of packaged cooking oil,' he added The detained crew as well as seized items worth RM80,000 were taken to Felda Sahabat maritime jetty for further action. The case is being investigated under the Control of Supply Act 1961, Immigration Act 1959/63 and Sabah Port and Harbours Enactment. In a separate case, the MMEA detained a fishing vessel off Pulau Tabawan, Kunak waters, for violating licence terms, on Sunday. Dzulfikhar said the vessel, operated by four individuals aged between 27 and 39 comprising three Filipinos including the skipper and a local, was detained at about 11.45am. He said further investigation found the vessel was in violation of the Fisheries Act 1985 for fishing less than 1.5 nautical miles from the shore. The boat and the crew were brought to Lahad Datu fishery jetty for further action. Failure to report skipper change: Boat detained

LAHAD DATU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained a local fishing vessel off Kampung Bakapit waters for failing to report change of skipper. Lahad Datu Maritime Zone Director, Maritime Commander Dzulfikhar Ali, said MMEA personnel conducting Ops Pluto Timur and Ops Tiris in the area intercepted the vessel and upon inspection found it failed to comply with the rules requiring it to report any change of skipper. 'MMEA views this non-compliance seriously as it is closely related to navigation safety and control of local fishing activities. 'Any change of skipper must be reported to ensure the licence and qualifications of the skipper are valid and recognised,' he said. The vessel was brought back to Lahad Datu Fishery jetty and handed over to the Lahad Datu Zone MMEA investigation officer for further action. Fishing boat detained off Lahad Datu for unreported skipper change

LAHAD DATU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained a local fishing vessel off Kampung Bakapit waters for failing to report a change of skipper during routine patrol operations. Lahad Datu Maritime Zone Director Maritime Commander Dzulfikhar Ali said the vessel was apprehended under Ops Pluto Timur and Ops Tiris. The inspection revealed the skipper replacement was not reported, breaching regulations critical to maritime safety and proper licensing. The vessel, valued at RM300,000, was escorted to Lahad Datu Fishery Jetty and handed to MMEA for further investigation under the Sabah Ports and Harbour Enactment 2002. Foreigner held for illegal fishing

LAHAD DATU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained a fishing boat for conducting illegal fishing off Felda Sahabat waters, here, on Wednesday. Lahad Datu Maritime Zone Director, Maritime Commander Dzulfikhar Ali said, the boat was detained at about 10.30am following a routine patrol under Ops Pluto Timur and Ops Tiris. The blue and white boat without registration number was detected at 4.1 nautical miles south of Tanjung Tungku. 'Result of inspection found a 28-years-old foreigner on board. The foreigner failed to produce any identification document or legal permit to carry out fishing activity in the national waters. 'The case would be investigated under the Immigration Act 1959 and Sabah Port and Harbor Enactment. The case will be handed over to the Investigation Officer for further action,' he said, adding that the seizures were estimated worth RM300,000. In the meantime, MMEA stressed their commitment in combating intrusion on national waters by foreigners and illegal fishing activities that affecting local sea resources.
