SANDAKAN: A 12-hour large-scale immigration crackdown saw 238 undocumented migrants detained here early Wednesday. Sabah Immigration Department Director Datuk Sh Sitti Saleha Habib Yussof said a total of 480 individuals were screened during the operation which began around 1.30am and ended before noon. The integrated operation, codenamed 'Ops Sapu' and 'Ops Mahir', targeted squatter settlements, construction sites and wood-processing factories at four hotspots, including Batu 8 and Batu 10 settlements. The operation involved 71 officers from the Sandakan, Tawau, Lahad Datu and Kota Kinabalu districts, as well as the department's enforcement division. 'The 238 people detained comprise 88 adult men, 88 adult women, 30 boys and 32 girls,' she said. They were detained for not possessing valid documents under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, overstaying under Section 15(1)(c), misuse of passes under Section 39(b) and employing undocumented migrants under Section 55B, among other offences. Of that number, 6,058 individuals have been deported to their countries of origin, while 53 employers have been prosecuted. 'We remind employers in Sabah to cooperate by ensuring that their workers have valid travel documents before hiring them, especially in factories or the construction sector, to avoid facing legal action,' said Sitti. She said such enforcement operations will continue in districts, including Semporna, Kota Kinabalu, Tawau and Sandakan, to uphold immigration laws across the State. She warned that action will be taken against employers and premises owners found hiring undocumented foreigners or individuals violating the conditions of their passes. Sitti advised employers to only hire foreign workers through legal channels, saying enforcement operations will be intensified to combat the presence of undocumented migrants. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Nowhere to hide for Indonesian woman in Terengganu immigration sweep
KUALA TERENGGANU: An Indonesian woman's attempt to hide under a bed to evade arrest failed after being spotted by enforcement officers from the Terengganu Immigration Department (JIM). Terengganu JIM director Mohd Yusri Mohd Nor said the woman in her 30s was among 11 illegal immigrants arrested in Ops Sapu raids carried out in the Kemaman and Kuala Terengganu districts yesterday. He said the woman was arrested at a house in Bandar Baru Kijal in Kemaman for overstaying after her last line of defence included a marriage certificate which could not be authenticated. 'During the raid, a man in the house claimed to be living alone but his deception was exposed after enforcement officers found women's clothing in a room. 'Upon checking, we discovered a woman hiding under a bed. The couple then showed a marriage certificate, but its validity could not be confirmed because it was not issued by an authoritative religious office in Malaysia,' he said in a statement today. Mohd Yusri said that apart from that hide-and-seek episode, the immigration party also arrested four Bangladeshis, three Indonesians. and two Thais aged between five and 49 years old in raids at seven premises. According to him, all the detainees were taken to the Ajil Immigration Depot for further investigation under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. In addition, a notice was issued to a local man to appear at the state JIM office to assist in investigations under the same act.

Selangor immigration arrests 52 undocumented migrants
SHAH ALAM: In a major crackdown, Selangor Immigration Department officers arrested 52 undocumented migrants, including Myanmar nationals and Pakistanis. Selangor Immigration Department director Khairrul Aminus Kamaruddin said the operation began at 3pm and involved 18 officers. "Those detained comprise one Indonesian, 11 Myanmar nationals, 13 Pakistanis and 27 Indians, aged between 23 and 45. "They were found to have breached Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, for staying in the country without valid documents," he said in a statement. During the Ops Sapu operation yesterday, undocumented migrants scrambled to evade capture in Section 28, a mixed area with residential, commercial, and industrial zones. Some fled into nearby premises, while others resorted to hiding between heavy machinery and lorries as immigration officers conducted a sweeping raid on the area. Malaysia has emerged as a key destination for foreign workers, driven by its strong economy, strategic location, and high demand for labour across multiple sectors. Jobs in agriculture and construction, often regarded as dirty, dangerous, and demanding, are typically shunned by locals. This has opened the door for foreign workers to step in and fill these vital workforce gaps.
