Baseball: Fighters beat Eagles on Gunji's homer, Kanemura's shutout

SENDAI (Kyodo) -- Yuya Gunji hit a solo home run in the top of the second and Shoma Kanemura pitched a complete-game shutout to give the Nippon Ham Fighters a 1-0 win against the Rakuten Eagles in Pacific League baseball on Friday. Kanemura (4-2) scattered five hits and a walk while striking out six in his 104-pitch outing at Rakuten Mobile Park Miyagi. Leading off the second inning, starting catcher Gunji sent his first pitch from Takahisa Hayakawa, a 145 kilometer-per-hour fastball, just inside the left-field foul pole. The go-ahead blast continued a run of improved form following a nine-game hitless streak that ended with an ice-breaking RBI against the Orix Buffaloes on May 15. "Things have gotten better since that at-bat," said Gunji, whose ability to play multiple positions has made him indispensable on defense for the PL leaders. Hayakawa (1-5) struck out nine and allowed four hits and a walk over seven innings. Rakuten slugger Hideto Asamura closed to within one hit of 2,000 for his career after going 1-for-3 with a single in the second.

Dodgers' Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitches 6 no-hit innings against the Diamondbacks

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Yoshinobu Yamamoto of the Los Angeles Dodgers is pitching a no-hitter against the Arizona Diamondbacks through six innings Tuesday night. The Japanese right-hander walked second baseman Ketel Marte in the fourth for his only baserunner. Yamamoto has eight strikeouts, including the sixth when Alek Thomas and Corbin Carroll took called third strikes and Jordan Lawler went down swinging. He joined the Dodgers last season after signing a $325 million, 12-year contract in December 2023. Yamamoto spent seven years with the Orix Buffaloes in the Nippon Professional Baseball League in Japan. He had a record of 70-29 with a 1.82 ERA and 922 strikeouts in 172 games. He is the 12th Japan-born player in Dodgers history. ___ AP MLB:

Baseball: Miyanishi sets relief appearance record as Fighters cruise

KITAHIROSHIMA, Japan (Kyodo) -- Left-hander Naoki Miyanishi set a Nippon Professional Baseball record of 880 consecutive appearances in relief Thursday as he helped the Nippon Ham Fighters beat the Orix Buffaloes 7-0. The 39-year-old, who has been with the Fighters since his professional debut in 2008, moved above former Chunichi Dragons lefty Hitoki Iwase to set the landmark with his 11th game this season. "It's not just a record for myself, and I want everyone to enjoy it," said Miyanishi (1-0), while addressing the home fans at Es Con Field Hokkaido. "While I'm waiting in the bullpen, I'm watching the game relaxed and without feeling nervous in order to give all I have once I get on the mound." The veteran came on with two out and a runner on third in the seventh and got Ryoma Nishikawa to ground out to get out of the jam, keeping the game scoreless. Yuya Gunji's bases-loaded, two-run single gave the Fighters the lead in the home half before he singled in two more runs in the Fighters' five-run eighth. Miyanishi became the first player in NPB to rack up 400 holds last August.

14 people from seven NPB teams admit to patronizing online casinos

Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball Organization said Thursday that 14 people from seven teams, including players and team officials, have voluntarily admitted to patronizing online casinos in the past. The NPB had called on its 12 baseball teams to have their members voluntarily report their use of online casinos, after the Orix Buffaloes announced on Feb. 21 that pitcher Taisuke Yamaoka participated in a poker tournament run by a foreign casino website. It did not disclose the names of the 14 people, all of whom used online casinos after February 2022, meaning that the three-year statute of limitations on simple gambling has yet to run out. In addition to the 14 individuals, there were reports of cases in which the statute of limitations had expired under the Penal Code, but they were not subject to the disclosure this time. The NPB said there have been no reports of gambling on baseball, which is prohibited by the Japanese professional baseball agreement. It will leave it up to each team on whether to lodge police reports or mete out punishments. "We take this very seriously," said Katsuhiko Nakamura, secretary-general of the NPB, adding that the NPB will take necessary measures in the wake of the disclosures. The organization will continue to accept voluntary reports for the time being.
