Baseball: Tigers' Ishii ties NPB record 39 straight scoreless innings

HIROSHIMA (Kyodo) -- Daichi Ishii tied a Nippon Professional Baseball record of pitching 39 consecutive shutout innings as the Central League-leading Hanshin Tigers beat the Hiroshima Carp 2-0 on Wednesday. The right-hander reached the landmark set in 2021 by the Seibu Lions' Kaima Taira, tossing a scoreless ninth inning at Mazda Stadium to earn his sixth save in his 42nd outing of the year as he got three strikeouts while allowing a single with two outs. The 28-year-old tied former Tiger and his current skipper Kyuji Fujikawa's CL record on Saturday and has now gone an inning better for a new milestone. "It really sank in when I had the honor of having a photo taken with him," Ishii said of Fujikawa, his idol who pitched for the Chicago Cubs and the Texas Rangers in Major League Baseball. "I genuinely want to rejoice (over the achievement)." The run started on April 5, and Ishii boasts a 0.21 ERA this season. The Akita Prefecture native was their eighth draft pick ahead of the 2021 season and helped them win the CL and the Japan Series two years later. On Wednesday, Haruto Takahashi (2-0) threw seven shutout innings on four hits to earn the win. The Tigers scored two runs in the third when runners reached second and third on errors, a sacrifice scored the first run and a Daichi Osera (5-7) wild pitch plated the second. In other action, the Pacific League-leading SoftBank Hawks beat the Seibu Lions 5-3 for their sixth straight win.

Ohtani Hits His 41th Homer, but Toronto Beats Dodgers 5-4 to Avoid Sweep

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani led off the game with his 41st homer, but Ernie Clement hit the tiebreaking homer leading off the ninth inning, and the AL-leading Toronto Blue Jays hung on to avoid a series sweep with a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday. Mason Fluharty earned his first career save in spectacular fashion after replacing erratic Jays closer Jeff Hoffman in the ninth with the bases loaded and one out. The rookie left-hander struck out Ohtani with a full-count breaking ball before getting Mookie Betts on a game-ending grounder. After Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a tying homer and Addison Barger followed with a go-ahead shot for Toronto off struggling Blake Treinen in the eighth inning, Clement hit the first pitch from Alex Vesia (2-2) in the ninth into the left-field bleachers. Hoffman (7-4) walked Freddie Freeman with the bases loaded to blow Toronto's lead in the eighth, and he walked three of the Dodgers' first four batters in the ninth. Ohtani drove Eric Lauer's fourth pitch 400 feet. The three-time MVP's third homer in four games tied him with Philadelphia's Kyle Schwarber for the NL lead. Freeman also homered in the first. Ohtani had two hits and was intentionally walked twice. The Dodgers' bullpen wasted another strong start by Tyler Glasnow, who yielded two runs on four hits and four walks while pitching into the sixth and striking out eight. Glasnow's winless streak stretched to 10 starts since March 31 despite his 1.82 ERA since coming off the injured list. Key moment Guerrero and Barger homered on juicy, belt-high sweepers from Treinen, while Clement put a great swing on a well-thrown low slider from Vesia. Key stat Ohtani, who only became an everyday leadoff hitter after joining the Dodgers last season, has already hit 23 career homers to start a game, including an MLB-leading 11 this season. Up next Yoshinobu Yamamoto (10-7, 2.51 ERA) opens another Freeway Series for the Dodgers in Anaheim on Monday. Jose Berrios (8-4, 3.89 ERA) takes the mound in Toronto against the Cubs on Tuesday.

Baseball: Hawks beat Fighters to extend Japan Pacific League lead

FUKUOKA (Kyodo) -- Hotaka Yamakawa and Jeter Downs both homered to back a strong outing from Kohei Arihara as the SoftBank Hawks beat the Nippon Ham Fighters 4-1 on Saturday. The win, in the opener of a crucial three-game home series, saw the Hawks extend their lead at the top of the Pacific League standings to two games over the second-place Fighters. The hosts turned a one-run deficit into a 2-1 lead in the second on Yamakawa's solo blast and Takashi Umino's RBI single. Two innings later, Downs added a two-run shot to left-center at Mizuho PayPay Dome in Fukuoka. SoftBank right-hander Arihara (10-5) held his former team to one run and four hits in seven innings, while Nippon Ham lefty Takayuki Kato (7-5) lasted only 3-1/3 innings. In other action, the Chunichi Dragons blanked the Hiroshima Carp 2-0.
