REUTERS/Oscar Martinez, Mexico, May 19, 2025. REUTERS/Oscar Martinez MEXICO CITY - The Mexican Navy ship which crashed into New York's Brooklyn Bridge over the weekend made no distress calls before the accident but called for support instead, Mexico's Navy chief Raymundo Morales said on Tuesday. The port pilot maneuvering the Cuauhtémoc sailing vessel had little time to stop it because it was docked a short distance from the bridge, Morales said at Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum's morning press conference. "We cannot speculate at this time whether the port pilot properly used all measures available." The accident, which left two dead and 20 injured, occurred when the majestic white training vessel was leaving lower Manhattan's Pier 17 on the East River shortly after sunset on Saturday. A U.S. investigation into the accident will look at possible engine malfunction and the role of a tugboat that assisted the ship in backing out of its pier, U.S. officials said on Monday, adding that the probe will take at least 30 days. "Of course, it will count on the collaboration and support of the Navy and the insurance company responsible for the ship," Sheinbaum said. Two cadets with severe injuries are in New York hospitals and their families have traveled there to be with them, Morales said. "Their lives are not in danger and they will probably be released from the hospital on Wednesday," he said. "The two cadets that unfortunately died were transferred back to Mexico on Monday and their bodies are now with their families." Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors We've finally got our first look at the spinoff to "The Office," and it's brought along Oscar Nunez, who's reprising his role as Oscar Martinez for the new series. The image also features series leads Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore. Along with releasing the new image, Peacock announced the name of the series is officially "The Paper" and that it will be released on Peacock sometime in September. You can check out the image below. Peacock has given fans a first look at "The Paper," the upcoming mockumentary series set in the same world as "The Office." The show will premiere in September. An exact premiere date will be announced at a later — Variety (@Variety) May 12, 2025 Read More: Multiple Fan-Favorite Shows Canceled at NBC Created by Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, "The Paper" finds the same documentary crew that once recorded the employees of Dunder Mifflin in a new assignment in the office of "The Truth-Teller," a Toledo newspaper in desperate straits. We don't know yet exactly how Oscar has found his way from Scranton to Toledo, but we're sure the story will be a good one. NBC The official logline for "The Paper" reads, "The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it." Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about "The Paper", Greg Daniels said, "It's about this struggling Midwestern newspaper that's much reduced from its glory days. A lot of the story lines are about how this guy, Domhnall Gleeson's character, is trying to restore this paper, and he just doesn't have the budget for hiring reporters, and he has to use all the staff that work there on a volunteer basis to be reporters. They're completely untrained and don't know what they're doing." The first look image was unveiled along with a short trailer at the NBCUniversal upfront presentation. The trailer reveals the name of the paper, and that not only is Oscar Nunez playing the same character as in "The Office", but that he isn't happy at all about seeing the documentary crew. "The Paper" also stars Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Ramona Young, Tim Key, and Alex Edelman. Creators Daniels and Koman will write the series and act as showrunners. "The Office" ran for 9 years and picked up 5 primetime Emmy awards in that time. Oscar Nunez appeared in the series for all nine seasons, playing accountant Oscar Martinez. A gay man and an intellectual elitist, Oscar often clashes with his insensitive boss Michael Scott (Steve Carell) and other unenlightened coworkers like Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson). Lake County sheriff investigating Gary officer-involved shooting

The Lake County Sheriff's Department is investigating a Gary officer-involved shooting that left a 38-year-old man dead. At about 8:38 p.m. Tuesday, sheriff's department officers responded to a call in the 2200 block of Carolina Street to assist Gary police with an armed hostage situation, according to a release from the Lake County Sheriff's Department. Upon arrival, a woman told police that her boyfriend had taken drugs and locked himself in a room with their 1-year-old child and a gun, a Gary Police release stated. About 20 minutes later, police received a call about a 35-year-old man being shot in the arm at the residence. He told police that he had gone to the house to get the child, his nephew, but was shot and fled to a nearby residence, police said. He refused medical treatment at the scene. Officers made contact with the suspect — a 38-year-old man. Police could hear the baby crying inside, but couldn't see the child. Gary Police tried to speak to the man through a back door, trying to de-escalate the situation, but the man shot through the door four times in the direction of officers, the release stated. Police helped secure the perimeter around the building and alerted the Gary Police SWAT team. As the suspect was resisting de-escalation efforts and shooting at officers, the SWAT team breached the residence with a ram, police said. A drone showed the man had gone to the second floor with his child. Tear gas was deployed by police. The man eventually walked out of an apartment around 4:20 a.m. holding a 1-year-old boy and waving a gun, police said. As the man ran toward his vehicle and officers, a Gary police officer opened fire, and the suspect was later pronounced dead at the scene, the release stated. The child was unharmed, but taken to Methodist Hospital Northlake as a precaution and the Department of Family Services was notified. Everyone involved in the incident has been left unnamed as the investigation is ongoing. 'Our community is deeply saddened by this tragic incident that began as a family matter but escalated into a critical public safety situation involving a young child,' Gary Chief of Police Derrick Cannon said in a statement. 'I commend the officers who responded to this dangerous scene where the subject repeatedly fired at officers. I also extend my sincere gratitude to Lake County Sheriff, Oscar Martinez for providing additional resources, including their Police Assisted Recovery Initiative (PARI) team with licensed social workers who supported our negotiators' de-escalation efforts.'
