If Telangana's BC reservation Bills don't get approval, BJP will be proven anti-OBC: Revanth Reddy
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Wednesday led a dharna in Delhi's Jantar Mantar, demanding the President's assent for two Bills passed by the State Assembly, to provide 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in education, employment, and local body elections. Mr. Reddy said if the Bills are not cleared, it will mean that the BJP is 'against Backward Castes'. The Congress leader said his government had delivered on their promise to the people by conducting the caste census and passing the Bills for 42% Other Backward Class (OBC) reservation. The Bills are awaiting Presidential assent for the last four months. Mr. Reddy accused the Centre of being indifferent to the pleas of the State government regarding the Bills. 'That is why we have decided to protest -- on the streets and in Parliament,' he said. He also said that he and his Cabinet had sought an appointment with President Droupadi Murmu but hadn't received any response. 'If the Bill is not granted assent, it will be clear that the BJP is against Backward Castes. If we are denied an appointment with the President, and if Prime Minister [Narendra] Modi refuses to answer in Parliament, we will not return to Delhi. Instead, anyone from the BJP who comes to Telangana will have to answer for this. The BJP will be wiped out in Telangana,' he added. Addressing the crowd earlier, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi said he hoped Mr. Modi, who claims to be a champion of the OBCs, would hear the voices of those suffering at the hands of his government in Telangana. Samajwadi Party's Dharmendra Yadav said the Modi-led government made lofty claims of taking care of Backward communities but rarely delivered on its promises. 'Though the government claims they will count caste during the Census, we need to remain vigilant,' Mr. Yadav said. Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi in a post on X thanked INDIA leaders who extended support to the protest and said, 'This fight is not just for Telangana. It is a collective fight to ensure that Indians from marginalised communities have their rightful share in power and progress.'

Fadnavis hails SC order reconfirming 27% OBC quota in Maharashtra local body polls
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday welcomed the Supreme Court directive on conducting elections under the new ward structure with 27 per cent reservation for the Other Backward Class (OBC) of 2017. This has paved the way for holding the long-due polls to the municipal corporations, municipal councils, zilla parishads, and other local bodies in Maharashtra. CM Fadnavis said, 'The Supreme Court directive regarding OBC reservation has two meanings. In the previous decision, the court had said that elections should be held as per the old OBC reservation, the same direction has now been confirmed. Therefore, the OBC quota will be applicable in the upcoming local, and civic body elections. The Supreme Court has also said that elections will be held as per 2017 ward structure, not as per of the year 2022. Therefore, both the demands of the state government have been accepted.' Former president of Ausa municipal council Afsar Sheikh had approached the court, seeking to conduct elections as per 2022 ward structure. The process for new ward formation is already underway and is likely to get over within a month and the court has refused to stay the same. NCP minister Chhagan Bhujbal said the ensuing local and civic body elections will be held with this 27 per cent OBC reservation and new ward structure. 'In its judgment on May 6, 2025, the Supreme Court had ruled that elections will be held with 27 per cent reservation. In today's ruling, the apex court has confirmed its earlier judgment saying the elections will be held with new ward structure. The Supreme Court has clearly said that composition of wards and its structure is entirely the prerogative of the state government, which has enacted a law in this regard. There is no stay on that. Therefore, today's apex court order has paved the way for holding local and civic body elections in the state with 27 per cent OBC quota and with new ward structure,' he remarked. NCP SP legislator Jitendra Awhad also hailed the apex court order. However, he accused the Mahayuti government of wasting three years due to vested interest. In Maharashtra, the local body polls will be nothing less than mini-assembly polls. In urban areas, out of 29 municipal corporations (Jalna and Ichalkaranji newly formed), all are run by administrators and are without an elected body. The state has 248 municipal councils and all have administrators. Out of 147 nagar panchayats, administrators — i.e. expired and newly formed nagar panchayats are 42, where elections will be held. In rural Maharashtra, out of total 34 zilla parishads, 32 have administrators, except for Bhandara and Gondia whose term will end in May 2027. In case of panchayat samitis, out of total 351 panchayat samitis, 336 have administrators where elections will be held.

She forced my son to meet, family killed him: Dalit man's father claims caste hatred
A 27-year-old Dalit man was hacked to death in broad daylight in Tamil Nadu's Thirunelveli district, in what his family alleges to be a caste-based honour killing. The victim, Kavin Selva Ganesh, a software engineer, was employed at a leading IT firm in Chennai and was reportedly in a long-term relationship with a woman from an Other Backward Class (OBC) to reporters in Thoothukudi, the victim's father, Chandrashekar, said, 'My son had finished engineering and was working in Chennai. They were in love since the time they were in 11th standard. The girl was the one who was torturing my son into meeting her. He would not go. We are from the Scheduled Caste (SC) community and they are from the Thevar community. The girl's parents and brother made my son meet them and killed him. We demand justice and the partners should be arrested.'The murder took place outside a private hospital in KTC Nagar, Thirunelveli, on Sunday. The victim, Kavin Selva Ganesh, was visiting his partner, when her brother Surjeet allegedly lured him away under the pretext of a conversation. Police say Surjeet then pulled out a sickle and hacked Kavin to death around 200 metres from the hospital premises. Surjeet initially fled the scene but later surrendered at Palayamkottai police station and has been detained under the Goondas Act. Police sent Kavin's body for post-mortem to the District Government Hospital and collected CCTV footage from the area as part of the family had refused to accept his body, demanding the arrest of not just Surjeet but also his parents—Saravanan and Krishnakumari—both serving Sub-Inspectors in the Tamil Nadu Police. They allege the girl's entire family plotted and carried out the murder. The police department has since suspended both Palayamkottai police have registered a First Information Report under Sections 296(b), 103(1), and 49 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, read with Sections 3(1)(r), 3(1)(s) and 3(2)(v) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, incident has sparked outrage across Tamil Nadu, with several political leaders and public figures condemning the murder and the rising trend of caste-based chief Edappadi K Palaniswami called it another example of the ruling government's failure to uphold social justice. 'Under Stalin's so-called 'Failure Model' government, caste-based honour killings are alarmingly on the rise. Caste clashes and violence against marginalised communities continue unabated I strongly condemn this Failure Model government,' he said in a post on Kamal Haasan said the killing was 'shocking' and urged the Tamil Nadu government to ensure the culprits receive severe punishment. 'All political movements must unite against the social disgrace of caste-based atrocities. We must recognise that caste is our primary enemy,' he founder Sridhar Vembu wrote, 'This senseless murder of Kavin Selvaganesh, a young man who rose from humble rural roots to become a software engineer, is shocking. The fact that this murder was allegedly at the behest of a couple who work in the police force is even more shocking We have to do more work at the roots of our society.'AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan said the killing was symptomatic of growing caste violence under the DMK rule. 'The Sub-Inspector mother and father behind the murder show the caste-based aberrations. For DMK, social justice and equality are only on paper.'Arumugam, a local Scheduled Caste community leader, echoed the family's allegations. 'A boy named Kavin has been killed in the name of honour. He had finished engineering and was working in TCS. The girl had called him and along with her family brutally killed him. We condemned the killing and protested since morning. The Deputy Superintendent of Police, Inspector and Assistant Commissioner said they will arrest the girl's parents who are both Sub-Inspectors. Believing that, we are leaving from here. Today fifty of us have come. Tomorrow hundreds of us will come and protest.'advertisementFurther investigation is ongoing.- Ends IN THIS STORY#Tamil Nadu

Supreme Court stays Calcutta HC order pausing new OBC list in Bengal
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday stayed a Calcutta High Court order that had paused the publication of the new Other Backward Class (OBC) list in West Bengal. A Bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai termed the impugned Calcutta High Court order both "surprising" and "prima facie erroneous'. The Bench, also comprising Justices K Vinod Chandran and N.V. Anjaria, disagreed with the Calcutta HC's view that the West Bengal government ought to have taken the state Assembly's approval before introducing the new OBC list. 'How can the Calcutta High Court pass a stay like this? Reservation is part of the Executive functions. This is the settled law right from the Indira Sawhney (judgment) that the Executive can do it. Executive instructions are enough for providing reservations and legislation is not necessary,' remarked the apex court. After parties urged the top court to decide the matter itself, the CJI Gavai-led Bench issued a notice on the West Bengal government's Special Leave Petition and listed the case for hearing after two weeks. 'Issue notice. In the meantime, there shall be a stay to the impugned order (of the Calcutta HC),' the Supreme Court said. In an interim order passed on June 17, a Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court had asked the West Bengal government not to publish the final notification for the new OBC list till July 31 this year. A Bench of Justices Tapabrata Chakraborty and Rajasekhar Mantha prima facie opined that the previous four to five notifications issued by the West Bengal government on the fresh survey to prepare the fresh OBC list were in violation of the apex court orders. The fresh OBC list was supposed to include 140 communities, and the interim stay was perceived as a major blow to the Mamata Banerjee-led state government. In its plea filed before the apex court, the state government has argued that if the interim stay imposed by the Calcutta High Court on issuing the final notification for the fresh OBC list prevails till July 31, the process for recruitments under this category, as directed by the apex court earlier, would be stalled. Earlier in May 2024, the Calcutta High Court had cancelled all the OBC certificates issued in West Bengal after 2010, which ideally meant that all such certificates issued during the current Trinamool Congress regime in the state since 2011 stood cancelled. The West Bengal government had moved the Supreme Court against this, and in March this year, the apex court allowed the state government to conduct a fresh survey to identify the OBCs in the state. Claiming that the fresh survey process was a blatant example of appeasement politics, a petition was filed before the Calcutta High Court challenging the pattern of the survey. The plea accused the state government of entertaining applications only from those 113 OBC communities that were scrapped by the Calcutta High Court last year. In an interim order passed on June 17, the Justice Chakraborty-headed Bench issued a stay on the issuance of the final notification for a revised OBC list in West Bengal till July 31.

Live Events UPSC Chairman Ajay Kumar told PTI that the Commission is firmly committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and fairness in its examination processes. "Any candidate found guilty of indulging in unfair means or misconduct during examinations faces strict disciplinary action as per rules, including debarment from future examinations, as the strictest action," he told PTI.
