The annual Outside Lands festival is underway at Golden Gate Park, launching a weekend of live music, good eats and immersive cultural programming expected to draw hundreds of thousands to San Francisco's west side. Now marking its 17th edition, the three-day event Friday-Sunday, Aug. 8-10, will feature more than 110 artists across seven stages, with performances beginning each day starting at noon. This year's headliners are Doja Cat, Tyler, the Creator and Hozier, respectively, joined by a wide-ranging lineup that includes Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals, Vampire Weekend, Jamie xx, Glass Animals and Gracie Abrams. The festival's economic impact is expected to exceed $70 million, according to organizers. In addition to the music, Outside Lands offers food from a slate of local Bay Area restaurants, showcasing global cuisines by regional chefs. Visitors will also find art installations, a cannabis marketplace, drag performances and after-hours shows at venues throughout the city. Festivalgoers are encouraged to use public transit, bike parking or official shuttle services departing from downtown San Francisco to avoid traffic congestion in the surrounding neighborhoods. There is no on-site vehicle parking. A strict bag policy is in place, with only clear bags, small purses and empty hydration packs allowed inside festival gates. Standard backpacks and non-clear bags are prohibited. Those unable to attend the outdoor event in person can stream select festival performances live on Prime Video and the Amazon Music Twitch channel, beginning each day at 1:30 p.m. Friday's performances include Beck, Doechii and John Summit, with a forecast calling for mild conditions and intermittent fog — classic San Francisco summer weather. Check back for highlights throughout the weekend.

Dead & Company, Outside Lands bring weeks of closures to Golden Gate Park

San Francisco's Golden Gate Park is gearing up for a packed summer concert season, prompting a wave of closures that will reshape access to much of the park for nearly a month. From late July through August, Another Planet Entertainment will host a series of large-scale concerts, including a three-night run by Dead & Company from Aug. 1-3 marking the 60th anniversary of the Grateful Dead, its annual Outside Lands festival from Aug. 8-10 and a one-night performance by Zach Bryan and Kings of Leon on Aug. 15. The Polo Field, the primary concert venue for the summer events, will be off-limits from July 23 to Aug. 20. Lindley Meadow, Hellman Hollow, Marx Meadow and several other open spaces will close on staggered dates through mid-August. Middle Drive, a key east-west artery, will be closed to vehicles for the full stretch of the concert series. Portions of John F. Kennedy Drive will also be shut down — not just to cars, but also to pedestrians and cyclists — from July 29 to Aug. 18. The closures coincide with a flurry of performances, including Sturgill Simpson (performing as Johnny Blue Skies) for the Dead celebration, and festival performers Beck, Doja Cat, Hozier and Tyler, the Creator. Additional detours will impact bicycles and cars, with Martin Luther King Jr. Drive limited to one-way traffic on non-show days and fully closed during concerts. Organizers say the extended timeline allows for the reuse of infrastructure between events. Permit fees — including an estimated $750,000 from the Aug. 15 show alone — will help fund park maintenance and public programming.

Paul Simon cancels concerts to undergo emergency surgery ahead of S.F. shows

Paul Simon canceled two concerts over the weekend due to health complications, and is scheduled to undergo surgery ahead of his San Francisco shows. 'Paul has been struggling with chronic and intense back pain,' a statement shared to his Instagram account on Saturday, June 28 reads. 'Today it became unmanageable and demands immediate attention.' Due to the pain, the 83-year-old scrapped appearances at Philadelphia's Academy of Music on Saturday and Sunday, June 28-29. He had already completed one of the three scheduled shows at the venue on Thursday, June 27. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee will now undergo a 'minor surgical procedure' in the coming days before proceeding with his A Quiet Celebration Tour, according to the statement. Simon's next show is set for Long Beach on July 7. He is also scheduled for a three-night stint at San Francisco's Davies Symphony Hall on July 19 and 21-22. Though he is unable to reschedule his missed Philadelphia dates immediately, he says he will look into making up the concerts in the future, according to the statement. Full refunds are being offered to ticket holders. The singer rose to fame in the 1960s as co-founder of the folk rock duo Simon & Garfunkel, with hits such as 'Mrs. Robinson' and 'The Sounds of Silence,' before launching his solo career in the '70s. Simon's recent tour came as a surprise to many, after the musician indicated in 2018 that he was retiring from touring due to hearing loss. A year later, however, he performed a headlining set at San Francisco's Outside Lands festival. To assist with live performances, Simon has worked with his production team and Stanford Initiative to Cure Hearing Loss to adapt his stage setup with moving monitors to ensure optimal acoustics. 'I don't think creativity stops with disability,' Simon said in a November interview on 'CBS Mornings.' 'So far, I haven't experienced that. And I hope not to.' Simon's A Quiet Celebration tour launched in New Orleans in early April and is scheduled to wrap up in August in Seattle.

Generate Key Takeaways Beck may be touring with a symphony this year, but that won't stop him from joining the lineup for the 17th edition of the Outside Lands festival, during which he'll be backed by an orchestra on the event's Aug. 8 opening day in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. Beck launched the orchestral concept in 2024 with shows at such storied venues as New York's Carnegie Hall and Los Angeles' Hollywood Bowl. Following three gigs in Japan this month, he'll return to the symphonic motif during an 11-date summer North American tour, beginning July 15 in New Haven, Ct. More from Spin: As previously reported, Outside Lands will be led by Tyler, the Creator, Hozier and Doja Cat. Also set to perform are John Summit, Anderson .Paak & the Free Nationals, Gracie Abrams, Doechii, Glass Animals, Jamie xx, Gesaffelstein, Bleachers, Ludacris, FINNEAS, Floating Points and Jorja Smith. Meanwhile, previously announced performer Vampire Weekend will now play both opening and closing sets at their stage on Aug. 9. Tickets go on sale tomorrow (May 7). Per usual, Outside Lands will offer a host of other amenities, including an on-site venue for fans to exchange wedding vows, the cannabis-friendly Grass Lands, the open-air SOMA dance stage and the Golden Gate Club, where chefs such as Tyler Florence and Melissa King will be cooking up a storm. Free concert series returns to downtown San Francisco this summer

A popular downtown concert series is returning for a second year as part of a broader push to revitalize the city's urban core through free public events and cultural programming, Mayor Daniel Lurie announced Friday, May 2. In partnership with Another Planet Entertainment, the promotion company behind the annual Outside Lands festival in Golden Gate Park, and the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, the 2025 series will kick off June 14 at Embarcadero Plaza with the second annual Back 2 Baysics concert, featuring San Francisco electronic music label Dirtybird. The event follows a successful 2024 season that drew tens of thousands to Union Square, Civic Center Plaza and Embarcadero Plaza. 'Last year's shows brought thousands of people to our downtown, and we're building on that momentum,' said Mayor Lurie. 'Our arts and culture are helping to drive San Francisco's comeback, and this is a perfect example of that energy.' The concert series is part of a three-year agreement with Another Planet Entertainment, which also includes two to three ticketed concerts at the Polo Field the weekend following the Outside Lands Festival. 'Last year was such an incredible cross-section of the San Francisco community,' Bryan Duquette, a member of Another Planet Entertainment's core executive team, said in a statement. 'San Francisco feels alive right now!' The deal supports city parks and brings significant foot traffic downtown — last year's Embarcadero concert nearly tripled local attendance on a typical Sunday, according to the mayor's office. The full lineup of events will be announced at a later date. 'Events like these remind us that our public spaces are for everyone,' said Phil Ginsburg, head of the Recreation and Park Department. 'Our downtown plazas are vibrant, joyful places where people can dance, connect, and experience the magic of live music together.'
