Rock legend cancels band's final show ever because of illness

Jeff Lynne had to cancel Electric Light Orchestra's (ELO) last show ever due health issues, according to the musician. ELO's final show on the 'Over and Out' farewell tour, was supposed take place at Hyde Park in London on Sunday, July 13. However, Lynne canceled the show the day before because of 'a systematic infection,' according to a statement on ELO's X page. 'Jeff Lynne is heartbroken to report that we will not be able to perform at tomorrow's BST Hyde Park Show,' the statement read. 'Jeff has been battling a systematic infection and is currently in the care of a team who have advised him that performing is simply not possible at this time nor will be able to reschedule.' It continued, 'The legacy of the band and his longtime fans are foremost in Jeff's mind today — and while he is so sorry that he cannot perform, he knows that he must focus on his health and rehabilitation at this time." Ticket holders were directed to BST Hyde Park's website for refunds. ELO's penultimate show was also canceled due to Lynne's health. The band's show Thursday night, July 10 at Co-Op Live in Manchester, England was set to be the second-to-last show on the 'Over and Out' farewell tour, but the concert was axed just minutes before showtime, according to NME. 'Unfortunately due to illness tonight's (Thursday 10th July 2025) scheduled performance of Jeff Lynne's ELO at the Co-Op Live will not be going ahead,' a statement on ELO's X page read. 'Jeff is devastated he cannot perform this evening. More information will become available as soon as possible. For refunds please go to your point of purchase.' Lynne has reportedly been struggling with his health while on tour. The musician broke his hand at the start of the final leg of the 'Over and Out' tour on July 5, Ultimate Classic Rock reported. Concertgoers have also shared concerns about the 77-year-old's health on social media. One fan wrote in a July 9 Facebook post that Lynne 'had to be helped onto the stage' and was 'missing his cues, forgetting words and almost collapsed two thirds of the way through' a concert they were at. 'They had to bring him a chair and he was struggling to stay on it. By the end of the concert the band had to sing Mr Blue Sky for him and his backing singers looked visibly shaken up,' the fan wrote. 'At the concert end the crew rushed onto the stage to help him off. So sad to see my musical hero in such a state. How on earth he will manage tomorrow's Mcr gig and Hyde park on Sunday I cannot imagine. Thanks Jeff for the fantastic music and enjoy your retirement. So So sad.' The final performance would have marked the end of a 55-year run for ELO, which formed in 1970 in Birmingham, England. The band released its eponymous debut album in 1971. ELO gained traction throughout the '70s and in the 1980s with hits like 'Evil Woman,' 'Turn to Stone,' 'Strange Magic' and 'Don't Bring Me Down,' which peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, Billboard reported. ELO has since released 15 studio albums, with 'From Out of Nowhere' in 2019 being their most recent. Several of the band's albums, including 1977's 'Out Of The Blue,' have been certified platinum status in the U.S. by the RIAA. The band split up in 1983 after Lynne began feuding with manager Don Arden but the breakup was finalized in 1986 because of contractual agreements. ELO reunited for a short period from 2000 to 2001 but didn't begin touring again consistently until 2014. ELO made its United States performance debut in 2018 after being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Jeff Lynne Cancels Final ELO Show Due to Health Issues

Jeff Lynne has already had his, what's believed to be, final show. Lynne, the frontman of the British rock band Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), was supposed to have his last live performance — and headline — at the BST Hyde Park festival on Sunday and was closing out his 'Over and Out' farewell tour. However, it's canceled due to his health issues. More from The Hollywood Reporter Will Justin Bieber Land a No. 1 Debut With 'Swag?' The statement continues, 'The legacy of the band and his longtime fans are foremost in Jeff's mind today — and while he is so sorry that he cannot perform, he knows that he must focus on his health and rehabilitation at this time.' Lynne briefly returned in 2001 but officially rejoined the band in 2014, when it revamped, which included him and pianist Richard Tandy. At the time of their farewell tour, Lynne was the last original member as Tandy died in 2024. He was 76. Lynne paid tribute to his longtime friend and collaborator on social media, writing, 'It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of my long-time collaborator and dear friend Richard Tandy. He was a remarkable musician & friend and I'll cherish the lifetime of memories we had together.' ELO's Jeff Lynne issues message to fans after BST gig cancellation over illness

Electric Light Orchestra's Jeff Lynne has thanked fans for their support after he pulled out of last night's BST Hyde Park gig due to illness. The frontman, 77, worried fans last week when he appeared unsteady on stage in Birmingham and he went on to cancel a Manchester gig followed by the London show due to take place on Sunday July 13, which was billed as their final ever UK gig. Sharing a video of fans singing along to Mr Blue Sky in Hyde Park yesterday in replacement of their much-anticipated goodbye gig, Jeff thanked fans and added: '#Overandout.' While no dates are listed on their Over and Out tour, whether ELO will do a final UK gig remains unclear. Having previously told Metro ELO's performance would be going ahead, BST organisers said in a statement on Saturday: 'Jeff Lynne is heartbroken to report that he will not be able to perform at tomorrow's BST Hyde Park show. It continued: 'Jeff has been battling a systemic infection and is currently in the care of a team of doctors who have advised him that performing is simply not possible at this time, nor will he be able to reschedule.' 'The legacy of the band and his longtime fans are foremost in Jeff's mind today—and while he is so sorry that he cannot perform, he knows that he must focus on his health and rehabilitation at this time.' Reacting to the cancellation, fans took to social media with their well-wishes. @Covbluenose said: 'So so sad. Jeff Lynne has been a titan of popular music and does not deserve to go out like this. I hope he can get back to good enough health to do one last show because it is clear this is hurting him badly.' @Nicki_Chapman added: So sadly no @JeffLynnesELO tonight as JeffLynne is unwell. This gig was going to be one of the highlights of my summer. His music was the soundtrack to my youth Wishing you a speedy recovery Sir. 'Shining' a little love (on your life)!' Jeff cancelled a gig on Thursday July 10 in Manchester as fans piled into the Co-Op Live Arena, having performed that week with a broken hand following an incident in London with a taxi. Manchester Evening News reports that he explained on stage on July 9: 'I was in London and a taxi dashed off from where he was coming from and smashed my hand. It really hurt at the time. That's why I haven't got a guitar – I normally would have.' Really hoping Jeff Lynne @JeffLynnesELO is doing ok at the end of tonight. Absolutely incredible concert and what a humble man, but I am very concerned about his health live arena @TheCoopLive staff were on it but maybe give the man a proper chair! — Emily Hepting (@Emilkywayz) July 9, 2025 Fans reported that Jeff 'asked to sit down' towards the end of his first Manchester show on July 9, while he 'struggled' to keep himself on the chair as he slid down. More Trending 'He missed a few bits in Mr Blue Sky (though was still amazing to his credit). Crew and band helped him off stage at the end,' X user @Emilkywayz continued. @DRClaireFox agreed that he 'looked very unwell' at the end of Wednesday's gig, while @DaydreamerDotty, who was in the second row, said they 'could see that Jeff started to look a bit unwell'. Electric Light Orchestra was founded in Birmingham in 1970 by frontman Jeff and keyboardist Roy Wood. Roy later left the group and was replaced by Richard Tandy, who had been the bassist but became the keyboardist until he died last year at the age of 76. Got a story? Jeff Lynne 'heartbroken' to cancel final ELO show amid health worries

Jeff Lynne of Electric Light Orchestra has canceled the rock band's final farewell performance amid health concerns. In a statement shared to Instagram Stories on Saturday, July 12, the 77-year-old musician said he's "heartbroken" he won't be able to perform with ELO at BST Hyde Park in London on July 13. The performance will not be rescheduled. It's unclear whether a different final show will be planned for a later date. ELO had previously canceled a July 10 performance in Manchester. Lynne was unable to play guitar during the band's recent shows in Birmingham, England, after suffering a hand injury, according to Rolling Stone and Ultimate Classic Rock. USA TODAY has reached out to a representative for Lynne for more information. "Jeff has been battling a systemic infection and is currently in the care of a team of doctors who have advised him that performing is simply not possible at this time, nor will he be able to reschedule," the announcement read. "The legacy of the band and his longtime fans are foremost in Jeff's mind today − and while he is so sorry that he cannot perform, he knows that he must focus on his health and rehabilitation at this time," the statement concluded. Review: Is there a better live sonic feast than Jeff Lynne's ELO? Not a chance. Lynne founded ELO in 1970 with Roy Wood and Bev Bevan. The group behind songs like "Mr. Blue Sky" kicked off its Over and Out tour, which was described as a farewell tour, in August 2024. The BST Hyde Park gig was expected to be ELO's last-ever show. "My return to touring began at Hyde Park in 2014," Lynne said last year when the performance was announced, per Billboard. "It seems like the perfect place to do our final show." Following Lynne's statement, BST Hyde Park posted that the July 13 event "will sadly be cancelled" and ticket holders "will be refunded and contacted directly by their ticket agent with further details." Speaking to Mojo last year, Lynne said that ELO's final performance "will certainly be an emotional show for me." At the same time, he stressed, "This is not a farewell to music. I am excited to return to the studio full-time, which is what I love!"
