8 hurt in fires that struck Las Piñas, CDO

Around 300 families were affected by a fire in Las Pinas City on Monday. Eight people sustained injuries in two separate fire incidents in Las Piñas City and Cagayan de Oro on Monday. In Mark Salazar's Monday report on 'Saksi,' 300 families were left homeless by the blaze in Barangay Almanza Uno, Las Piñas. Strong winds fanned the fire causing it to reache a street in neighboring Parañaque City. About 100 houses were destroyed or damaged by the fire. A resident also lost P350,000 in cash that he had saved for three years and kept in his home to the fire. Five persons were injured in the incident and were given medical treatment. Firefighters faced difficulties in extinguishing the blaze due to quick spread of the fire among the houses built of light materials and there was only one water hydrant in the area. Meanwhile in Cagayan de Oro, two people were injured in a fire that occurred at a residential neighborhood. According to the Bureau of Fire Protection, 70 houses were damaged by the blaze, causing an estimated P4 million in damages. Another fire at a school in Alimodian, Iloilo destroyed 14 classrooms. The school's canteen, clinic and stage were also damaged. Several laptops and television sets were also consumed by the flames. According to initial findings, an electric fan caused the fire. The damage was estimated at P14 million. The school administration said it will convert some of its facilities to classrooms. In Cebu City, over 30 houses were damaged by a fire that lasted over one hour before it was declared under control. According to the owner of the house where the fire started, he saw some children playing with a lighter. The blaze easily spread as the houses were made with light materials. About 300 residents were affected by the fire. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA Integrated News

Comelec urges law to institutionalize increase in teachers' honoraria

"Isa sa mga proposals ng inyong lingkod, sana magkaroon ng legislation na may automatic increase on a per election basis sa mga honoraria ng mga guro," Garcia said. The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has called for legislation institutionalizing increases in the honoraria for teachers serving as election staff and making the benefit tax-free. At a news forum on Thursday, Comelec chairman George Erwin Garcia said that there will be no P2,000 across-the-board increase in the honoraria of teachers who will serve in the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections in October. The said increase was implemented in the May 12 mid-term elections. Garcia said the proposed P14 billion budget of the poll body for the 2025 BSKE was reduced to P11 billion. "Isa sa mga proposals ng inyong lingkod, sana magkaroon ng legislation na may automatic increase on a per election basis sa mga honoraria ng mga guro. Ibig sabihin, 'pag nagkakaroon din tayo ng increase sa gastusin, dapat may automatic increase sa honoraria ng mga guro,' Garcia told the monthly forum of the Manila City Hall Reporters' Association (MACHRA). (One of our proposals is for the crafting of a legislation that would automatically increase the honoraria of teachers per election basis.) 'Syempre pinu-push pa rin natin ang tax exemption ng mga guro. Hindi naisakatuparan nitong 2025 national and local elections. Sana magkaroon ng tax exemption sa BSKE and such other benefits. Susuportahan po natin yun," he said. (We're also pushing for the tax exemption of teachers. This did not happen in the 2025 NLE but we are hoping it would be implemented in the BSKE.) Teachers who served as poll workers in the recent elections received additional P2,000 honoraria. This gives ERB members with P10,000 and chairpersons with P12,000 but still subject to tax. According to Garcia, the Comelec will urge President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for additional honoraria, similar to the P1,000 increase granted to teachers for the 2025 May elections. 'Kahit hindi mismo sinasabi ng mga guro, nararapat lang yun,' Garcia added. (They may not say anything but teachers deserve that.) In September 2024, the Comelec said the budget cuts in their proposed 2025 funding will impact the preparations for the 2025 elections including the BSKE. It would likewise affect the voter education for the polls. –NB, GMA Integrated News

Julieta Makintach - dubbed the "judge of God" - recused herself after a trailer for the six-part mini-series was embarrassingly played to the court. The shocking preview begins with Makintach strutting through the entrance of what seems to be a court house in high heels as she takes the lift to the upper floors. News broadcasts of footy legend Maradona's death are also featured in the trailer, as well as an excerpt of an emergency call asking for an ambulance. It concludes with Makintach preparing documents at a desk. The bizarre footage suggests unauthorised recordings were shot inside the courtroom, which constitutes a breach of judicial rules. According to a script, the mini-series would follow Makintach as she "reconstructs the death of Maradona and certain painful milestones of his life related to abandonment." The trailer preview was one of the various pieces of evidence seized by cops in raids last week as the trail was suspended. Tuesday's hearing was marked by insults, recriminations, shouting and tears. In a bitter exchange, prosecutor Patricio Ferrari accused Makintach of behaving "like an actress and not a judge." He said: "[Makintach] spoke about Maradona, the trial, how it was unfolding. Diego Maradona's daughter fights back tears as she says family live in fear of mafia ahead of trial into his death "She has been completely influenced by her leading role, by the centrality of her figure. "She lied to our faces for three months. I demand that the court recuse judge Makintach." As the trailer was played, defence lawyer Rodolfo Baque jumped out of his chair to shout "trash" at the judge. The late footballer's daughter Gianinna Maradona tried to calm him before she and Maradona's former partner, Veronica Ojeda, both began to sob. Makintach sat with her head bowed, biting her lip and eventually said she had "no choice" but to recuse herself as one of the case's three justices. Her removal is an embarrassment for Argentina's judicial system and could yet derail a trial being watched by football fans worldwide. Maradona - considered one of the world's greatest ever football players - had been recovering at his home in Buenos Aires from surgery on a brain blood clot when he tragically died of a heart attack aged 60. The charges relate to their decision to allow him to recover from major surgery at home, and the conditions of his care. They deny the charges. The medical team on trial includes a neurosurgeon, a doctor and a night nurse. The defendants have claimed Maradona refused any further treatment and should have stayed home for longer following his operation. Gianinna Maradona has claimed her father was kept in "a dark, ugly and lonely" place and that his carers were more interested in money than his welfare. The court will decide on Thursday whether the trial will go ahead or be scrapped and then restarted. Some of the plaintiffs have called for a new trial, saying they felt proceedings have been tainted by scandal. The lawyer for Maradona's ex-partner Ojeda said that "everyone now feels that this is compromised," adding that it's "healthiest to start over from scratch". Glam Makintach denied being paid for the documentary and said that she had given "an interview to a childhood friend about the justice system". Makintach added: "That material was raw, it was intimate. It was on a Sunday at 5pm. Does that give it the label of forbidden, hidden, illicit?" According to Argentinian media, prosecutor Ferrari said: "On Sunday March 9, before the trial began, Makintach entered the building with six people. "And if there is a script and a trailer, it wasn't just an interview. "There were photos, footage. There was no authorisation for this irregular entry. "All the aggravating circumstances clearly exist that demonstrate the loss of independence and impartiality of the member summoned to this trial."

Alleged shabu supplier in Metro Manila nabbed with P14M worth of drugs

A buy-bust operation in Batasan-San Mateo Road in Quezon City led to the arrest of an alleged supplier of shabu and the seizure of the illegal drugs worth almost 14 million. According to a "24 Oras" report by Emil Sumangil on Wednesday, the suspect was arrested by two undercover police agents after confirmation that he was carrying contraband. 'Base mga impormasyon na na-extract natin during the custodial debriefing report, kilo-kilo ang binabagsak niya na shabu sa kaniyang mga big-time pushers na mga customers from Pasig, Marikina, Antipolo, and Quezon City,' said Quezon City Police Department Station 6 Station Commander Police Lieutenant Colonel Romil Avenido. (Based on information we extracted during the custodial debriefing report, he had been supplying several kilograms of shabu to his big-time pusher customers from Pasig, Marikina, Antipolo, and Quezon City.) 'Ang station commander po natin diyan ay nakikipagcoordinate din sa adjacent municipalities ng Rizal... para sa ating intel fusion, nagpapalitan po tayo ng intelligence report at target personalities,' added Quezon City Police Department officer-in-charge Police Colonel Randy Glen Silvio. (Our station commander there had coordinated with adjacent municipalities from Rizal… for our intel fusion, we have been exchanging intelligence reports and target personalities.) Authorities were able to seize two kilograms of shabu worth P14 million from the suspect, who was identified as a painter who had also been jailed for previous charges involving illegal drugs. 'Bago ito, kami ay na-surprise din… During the buy-bust, one kilo lang ang pinag usapan namin, only to find out two kilos pala ang laman,' said Avenido. (Before this, we were also surprised… During the buy-bust, we only discussed one kilo, only to find out that he was carrying two kilos.) 'Mayroon po tayong na develop tayong link analysis... Mayroon na rin tayong initial info sa kanyang source,' he added. (We have developed link analysis… We have initial info regarding his source.) Meanwhile, the suspect said that he was only ordered to deliver the drugs. 'Pinahatid lang sakin 'yun... Napagutusan lang ako... Sa hirap ng buhay kaya sumunod ako,' said the suspect. (I was only asked to deliver it… I was ordered… Life is so difficult, I had to follow orders.) —Jiselle Anne Casucian/LDF, GMA Integrated News
