8 hurt in fires that struck Las Piñas, CDO
Eight people sustained injuries in two separate fire incidents in Las Piñas City and Cagayan de Oro on Monday.
In Mark Salazar's Monday report on 'Saksi,' 300 families were left homeless by the blaze in Barangay Almanza Uno, Las Piñas.
Strong winds fanned the fire causing it to reache a street in neighboring Parañaque City.
About 100 houses were destroyed or damaged by the fire.
A resident also lost P350,000 in cash that he had saved for three years and kept in his home to the fire.
Five persons were injured in the incident and were given medical treatment.
Firefighters faced difficulties in extinguishing the blaze due to quick spread of the fire among the houses built of light materials and there was only one water hydrant in the area.
Meanwhile in Cagayan de Oro, two people were injured in a fire that occurred at a residential neighborhood.
According to the Bureau of Fire Protection, 70 houses were damaged by the blaze, causing an estimated P4 million in damages.
Another fire at a school in Alimodian, Iloilo destroyed 14 classrooms.
The school's canteen, clinic and stage were also damaged. Several laptops and television sets were also consumed by the flames.
According to initial findings, an electric fan caused the fire.
The damage was estimated at P14 million.
The school administration said it will convert some of its facilities to classrooms.
In Cebu City, over 30 houses were damaged by a fire that lasted over one hour before it was declared under control.
According to the owner of the house where the fire started, he saw some children playing with a lighter.
The blaze easily spread as the houses were made with light materials.

Gorio slightly weakens as it exits PAR
Typhoon Gorio has slightly weakened as it exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility, PAGASA said late Wednesday afternoon. In its 5 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA said at 4 p.m., Gorio was located 325 km northwest of Itbayat, Batanes, and moving west northwestward at 25 km/h. Gorio slightly intensifies as it moves west to Taiwan
Typhoon Gorio slightly intensified as it continued moving west, according to the PAGASA late Thursday evening. 'As of 10 p.m., the center of the eye of Typhoon GORIO was estimated based on all available data at 300 km East Northeast of Itbayat, Batanes.' the state weather bureau said in its 11 p.m. advisory. The typhoon was moving westward at 25 km/h. 'GORIO may make landfall over the eastern coast of southern Taiwan tomorrow (13 August) morning or afternoon and exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by tomorrow afternoon or evening. GORIO is forecast to intensify prior to its landfall to Taiwan before weakening throughout the remainder of the forecast period,' PAGASA added. In terms of intensity, Gorio's maximum sustained winds of 130 km/h near the center, gustiness of up to 160 km/h, and central pressure of 970 hPa. Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No.2 is in effect over Itbayat, Batanes while TCWS No. 1 was issued for the rest of the province. Meanwhile, the enhanced Southwest Monsoon or Habagat will bring strong to gale-force gusts over the Babuyan Islands and the northern portion of mainland Cagayan, the eastern portion of Isabela, and the northern portion of Ilocos Norte. A Gale Warning is in effect over the seaboard of Extreme Northern Luzon. Up to very rough seas of up to nine meters will be experienced on the seaboards of Batanes. Gorio slows down, might become typhoon before Taiwan landfall; no immediate impact on PH
Severe Tropical Storm Gorio has slightly decelerated as it moves west-southwestward over the Philippine Sea, according to the latest advisory from PAGASA on Monday afternoon. Based on its 5 p.m. bulletin, the state weather bureau said the storm's center was located approximately 1,045 kilometers east of Extreme Northern Luzon (at latitude 20.5°N, longitude 132.0°E), moving at a slower pace of 20 kilometers per hour. It currently carries maximum sustained winds of 110 kilometers per hour near the center, with gusts reaching up to 135 kilometers per hour. PAGASA forecasts that Gorio will generally continue moving westward over the next 12 hours, then gradually turn west-northwestward starting Tuesday afternoon through the end of the forecast period. The tropical cyclone may reach typhoon strength before making landfall over the eastern coast of Taiwan by Wednesday afternoon, August 13. Gorio is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Wednesday evening. For the Philippines, PAGASA noted that Gorio is unlikely to directly affect the country within the next three days. However, the agency cautioned that a further southward shift in the storm's track could lead to the hoisting of Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 over Extreme Northern Luzon.
