PCA says 100-M coconut tree goal on track, eyes boost in yields and farmer support
The Philippine Coconut Authority said it is on pace to meet President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s target of planting 100 million coconut trees by the end of his term, as part of a national strategy to revitalize the country's coconut industry, increase export earnings, and support millions of Filipino farmers. PCA Administrator Dr. Dexter Buted said the agency is implementing a 'twin program' focused on large-scale planting and fertilization to address aging coconut trees, improve productivity, and strengthen the industry's role in the economy. 'Ito po 'yung mandato ng ating mahal na Presidente, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., na magtanim ng 100 million coconuts," said Buted at a televised public briefing on Wednesday. (This is the directive of our beloved President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. — to plant 100 million coconuts.) The Philippines is currently the world's second-largest coconut producer, with an annual yield of approximately 14.7 billion coconuts. Indonesia, the current leader, produces around 17.1 billion. According to Buted, the government aims to close this gap by improving sustainability and productivity through the twin program. 'Para mapalampasan natin at tayo ang manguna sa global market, kailangan tayong gumawa ng mga hakbang," he said. (To surpass them and lead the global market, we must take proactive steps.) Targets and Progress Since the initiative began in 2022, PCA has planted around 1.7 million coconut seedlings in 2023. In 2024, the agency reported planting 8.6 million seedlings, slightly surpassing its 8.3 million target. For 2025, it aims to plant 15.3 million, and from 2026 to 2028, 25 million trees per year, totaling 100 million by the end of the program. Buted added that with sustained implementation, the country could reach an estimated yield of 20.1 billion coconuts by 2034 — even beyond the current administration's term. 'Pagdating ng 2034, kahit hindi na niya term, makikita mo na talagang umusbong — nanguna tayo," he noted. (By 2034, even after the President's term ends, you will see that the industry has flourished — we will be leading.) Economic and Industry Impact According to PCA, the coconut industry contributes around $2.2 billion annually in export revenues. Coconut is one of the country's top agricultural exports, with emerging applications in biofuel and aviation fuel. 'May aviation fuel tayo — nag-start na tayo sa EU na nasa 2% ng requirement nila para ma-blend natin sa ating fuel,' Buted said. (We've begun blending our coconut-derived aviation fuel with 2% of the EU's fuel requirement.) PCA also reported enhancements to the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan (CFIDP), recently amended under the Marcos administration. The updated plan includes components such as social protection, community-based farm enterprises, and cooperative development. Among the new support mechanisms is a medical assistance program that provides farmers and their dependents with up to P40,000 for hospitalization costs, on top of existing government healthcare coverage. Outpatients may also receive P5,000 in support. 'Pag na-hospital ang farmer…nakakapagbigay tayo ng maximum of P40,000,' Buted said. (When a farmer is hospitalized, we can provide up to P40,000.) Mobile medical missions and medicine distribution are also being conducted in farming communities as part of the rollout. PCA estimated that the coconut industry directly supports about 2.8 million farmers and indirectly benefits around 20 million people across the country. The agency said it will continue monitoring progress and adjusting strategies as needed to meet its long-term targets in both production and social development.—AOL, GMA Integrated News

Man pursues thieves of his motorcycle on foot in Calumpit, Bulacan
Six motorcycle-riding men stole the motocycle of a man, who was waiting for his girlfriend, in Calumpit, Bulacan early Monday morning, according to the report of Nico Waje on "Saksi." The victim said one of the suspects aimed a gun to his head, who asked for his cellphone and told him that they are taking his motorcycle. The victim ran after the thieves and threw a stone at the suspects and hit one of the men. The police tracked his motorcycle through its GPS and found it in Barangay Sta. Cruz in Quezon City. Calumpit Station Police Chief Lt. Col. Jonathan Meru said they found the motorcycle in a house and the mechanic who was tasked to disassemble the vehicle. Two of the six suspects were nabbed. The victim also identified one of them as the one who aimed a gun at him and took his motorcycle. Waje reported that the police said there were some parts of the motorcycle that were already replaced such as the brake lever and the seat. The owner identified the chassis number of the motorcycle, which was the same in the OR/CR that are in his possession. It was also found out that the seat of his motorcycle was placed in another unit. The police said this process is the modus of the thieves so the owners will not recognize their motorcycle and before they sell the units. The refurbished motorcycles are sold for about P40,000 and the sale is usually done online. The suspects - aged 18 and 23 - denied the accusations. Calumpit police said they have identified the four other suspects involved in the crime. They will be facing charges of carnapping and robbery. — BAP, GMA Integrated News

AirAsia MOVE faces economic sabotage case for alleged overcharging in the Philippines
MANILA: The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is preparing an economic sabotage case against the online travel agent platform of aviation group AirAsia for allegedly selling plane tickets to Tacloban at 'unreasonably' high prices. In a press briefing on Monday (June 2), Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon (pic) said they were finalising the complaints against AirAsia MOVE with the target of filing the case this week. Prior to this, the government agency issued a cease and desist order against the company headquartered in Malaysia on May 26. Dizon said the case stemmed from the complaint by Leyte 4th District Rep. Richard Gomez and Ormoc Mayor Lucy Torres-Gomez, who booked Philippine Airlines (PAL) flights from Tacloban to Manila via AirAsia MOVE that cost them about P77,704 (US$1392) – or almost P40,000 each. Had they booked through the PAL website, the plane tickets would have only cost them P49,507, Dizon noted. 'I have asked them (Philippine National Police – Anti-Cybercrime Group) to take this website down today, so this AirAsia MOVE can no longer scam others. I'm sure Congressman Richard Gomez is not the only victim here,' Dizon announced in a press conference on Monday. 'I also asked the CAB (Civil Aeronautics Board) and DOTr aviation group to immediately file a criminal economic sabotage case against AirAsia MOVE because this is really economic sabotage,' Dizon added. Dizon stressed that AirAsia MOVE's one-way plane tickets are three times higher compared to the tickets sold by other airlines at around P12,000. Aside from Gomez, Dizon said he had also received a letter from the Office of the Civil Defence executive director, Undersecretary Ariel Nepomuceno, detailing similar complaints about the selling of unreasonably high-priced plane tickets to Tacloban. Dizon also said that the overcharging might have stemmed from the limited access to the 53-year-old San Juanico Bridge, whose load limit has been limited to three tonnes starting May 15, barring trucks and buses from crossing the 2.16-km. bridge. 'Clearly there is a crisis there because the movements of goods and people were affected by the partial closure of the San Juanico Bridge to heavy vehicles, such as buses and trucks. They are taking advantage of the situation,' he lamented. The DOTr chief also instructed CAB to investigate other online platforms suspected of overcharging plane tickets not only in Tacloban but also in other destinations. Asked if Dizon had already asked AirAsia about this, he said that the multinational airline 'has nothing to do with' the issue surrounding the online travel booking platform and is only 'affiliated' with it. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
