PCA says 100-M coconut tree goal on track, eyes boost in yields and farmer support

GMA Network5 days ago
The Philippine Coconut Authority said it is on pace to meet President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s target of planting 100 million coconut trees by the end of his term, as part of a national strategy to revitalize the country's coconut industry, increase export earnings, and support millions of Filipino farmers.
PCA Administrator Dr. Dexter Buted said the agency is implementing a 'twin program' focused on large-scale planting and fertilization to address aging coconut trees, improve productivity, and strengthen the industry's role in the economy.
'Ito po 'yung mandato ng ating mahal na Presidente, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., na magtanim ng 100 million coconuts," said Buted at a televised public briefing on Wednesday.
(This is the directive of our beloved President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. — to plant 100 million coconuts.)
The Philippines is currently the world's second-largest coconut producer, with an annual yield of approximately 14.7 billion coconuts. Indonesia, the current leader, produces around 17.1 billion. According to Buted, the government aims to close this gap by improving sustainability and productivity through the twin program.
'Para mapalampasan natin at tayo ang manguna sa global market, kailangan tayong gumawa ng mga hakbang," he said.
(To surpass them and lead the global market, we must take proactive steps.)
Targets and Progress
Since the initiative began in 2022, PCA has planted around 1.7 million coconut seedlings in 2023. In 2024, the agency reported planting 8.6 million seedlings, slightly surpassing its 8.3 million target. For 2025, it aims to plant 15.3 million, and from 2026 to 2028, 25 million trees per year, totaling 100 million by the end of the program.
Buted added that with sustained implementation, the country could reach an estimated yield of 20.1 billion coconuts by 2034 — even beyond the current administration's term.
'Pagdating ng 2034, kahit hindi na niya term, makikita mo na talagang umusbong — nanguna tayo," he noted.
(By 2034, even after the President's term ends, you will see that the industry has flourished — we will be leading.)
Economic and Industry Impact
According to PCA, the coconut industry contributes around $2.2 billion annually in export revenues. Coconut is one of the country's top agricultural exports, with emerging applications in biofuel and aviation fuel.
'May aviation fuel tayo — nag-start na tayo sa EU na nasa 2% ng requirement nila para ma-blend natin sa ating fuel,' Buted said.
(We've begun blending our coconut-derived aviation fuel with 2% of the EU's fuel requirement.)
PCA also reported enhancements to the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan (CFIDP), recently amended under the Marcos administration. The updated plan includes components such as social protection, community-based farm enterprises, and cooperative development.
Among the new support mechanisms is a medical assistance program that provides farmers and their dependents with up to P40,000 for hospitalization costs, on top of existing government healthcare coverage. Outpatients may also receive P5,000 in support.
'Pag na-hospital ang farmer…nakakapagbigay tayo ng maximum of P40,000,' Buted said.
(When a farmer is hospitalized, we can provide up to P40,000.)
Mobile medical missions and medicine distribution are also being conducted in farming communities as part of the rollout.
PCA estimated that the coconut industry directly supports about 2.8 million farmers and indirectly benefits around 20 million people across the country.
The agency said it will continue monitoring progress and adjusting strategies as needed to meet its long-term targets in both production and social development.—AOL, GMA Integrated News

Marcos tells agencies to speed up aid to flood victims

President Ferdinand Marcos said he has instructed concerned government agencies to ensure the safety of the people amid the floods in Metro Manila and several other provinces, and to deliver assistance to flood victims quickly. "I gave the instructions for them to work and coordinate to ensure that all our kababayans are out of harm's way, and that the relief goods are ready to be delivered," Marcos said in Filipino in a video message posted by the Presidential Communications Office. He was referring to the Office of Civil Defense, and the Departments of Transportation, Health, Science and Technology, Social Welfare and Development, Energy, Public Works and Highways and Interior and Local Government. Marcos is currently in the United States for a meeting with US President Donald Trump. He said medical teams should also be present during the distribution of relief goods. He added there should also be an unhampered supply of water and electricity. Marcos appleaed to the public to heed the instructions of authorities as rains continue to batter Metro Manila and nearby provinces. "The government is here to provide the services needed by our people," he said. Earlier, Malacanang said it approved the recommendation of the Department of Interior and Local Government to suspend classes and government work in Metro Manila, and the provinces of Zambales, Bataan, Pampanga, Bulacan, Cavite, Batangas, Rizal, Pangasinan, Tarlac, and Occidental Mindoro. In Memorandum Circular No. 89, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin said the class and work suspension in the said areas was also "Upon the recommendation of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council relative to the continuous heavy rainfall." "However, agencies responsible for basic, vital and health services, preparedness and response duties must continue to remain operational to ensure continuity of essential government functions despite the declaration of work suspension," Bersamin added. The rains are mostly brought by the Southwest Monsoon or habagat, as even Severe Tropical Storm Crising, which is already out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility, also dampened the country this week.—LDF, GMA Intregrated News

First batch of Community Mortgage Program sites to be awarded by October

State-run Social Housing Finance Corporation (SHFC) is looking to award the first batch of Community Mortgage Program (CMP) sites by October this year, as the government has revived the program that allows beneficiaries to borrow up to P750,000 for housing assistance. According to the SHFC, eight initial CMP sites have been identified, and are targeted to be awarded by October this year: in Ilocos Norte; Ilocos Sur; Iloilo City; Pasig City; Roxas City; Tanay, Rizal; and Valenzuela. A total of 34 sites have been identified for the national scope of the CMP. 'These projects represent not just houses but hope, dignity, and stability for thousands of Filipino families. This move reflects our strong commitment to address the housing needs of the underserved through direct community empowerment,' SHFC president and chief executive officer Federico Laxa said in a statement. Based on the CMP overview on the SHFC website, the CMP is a people-led housing finance and community development program, which seeks to assist legally organized associations of low-income groups to acquire and develop a tract of land under the concept of community ownership. Under the program, member-beneficiaries can borrow P400,000 for onsite; P480,000 for horizontal housing; up to P750,000 for vertical housing; and P350,000 for farm lot, and P50,000 for farmer support assistance. CMP loans bear 6% interest per year, based on the outstanding balance and payable over a maximum period of 25 years in equal monthly amortizations. According to the SHFC, the revival of the CMP comes with 'key enhancements' to eliminate bottlenecks and accelerate project implementation, such as the provision of an additional credit component dedicated to site upgrading on top of the initial loan for lot acquisition. 'This aims to ensure that CMP communities are no longer considered informal or blighted settlements,' the SHFC said. 'We will be more transformative with our CMP projects to ensure the continuous improvement of the communities we serve,' Laxa said. Laxa said the SHFC will also collaborate with other agencies to ensure that beneficiaries can access a broader range of services, such as the planned partnership with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) to provide skills training and capacity-building programs to boost long-term income prospects. A dedicated task force has also been established to fast-track the evaluation and approval of CMP projects. — Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/BM, GMA Integrated News

First Lady Liza Marcos visits Bahay Kalinga in Saudi

First Lady Louise 'Liza' Araneta-Marcos visited the Bahay Kalinga temporary accommodations in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia over the weekend. As part of her working visit there, the First Lady met with distressed overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), mothers, and children, delivering the message that they were coming home. Her visit marked the first time a Philippine First Lady visited Bahay Kalinga, which is a temporary accommodation facility for OFWs awaiting repatriation in Saudi Arabia. During the visit, the First Lady listened to the stories of hardship, quiet strength, and hope of the OFWs. As directed by President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr., the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) facilitated the safe repatriation of 43 distressed OFWs and eight minor dependents, including those with medical needs. Each repatriate received financial and reintegration assistance — ?50,000 from DMW, ?10,000 from OWWA plus Balik Pinas, Balik Hanapbuhay aid, ?10,000 from DSWD, and ?60,000 from the Office of the President — along with travel luggage and essentials from the First Lady. The OWWA also provided transportation and temporary accommodation support for the OFWs who are returning to Visayas and Mindanao. Meanwhile, the First Lady also visited the Bagong Bayani ng Mundo Serbisyo Caravan, where she met OFWs availing themselves of services from frontline agencies. It was the first time a wide array of government agencies — including DMW, OWWA, PhilHealth, SSS, Pag-IBIG, DTI, Landbank, DSWD, PAO, and PSA — came together in one caravan to bring services to OFWs in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.—LDF, GMA Integrated News
