Kota Kinabalu: Irish singer Rebecca O'Connor, one of the world's finest Tina Turner tribute artists, will hold a charity concert here in aid of the Palliative Care Association of Kota Kinabalu (PCAKK). The concert, themed Heart of Gold, will feature the electrifying Simply the Best – Tina Turner Tribute Show. The internationally acclaimed Rebecca has been personally endorsed by Tina Turner, who once described her performance as 'so good, it's scary.' She will perform at PCAKK's annual charity concert-cum-dinner on August 8, 2025, at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) here. PCAKK, led by President Datuk Dr Jaswant Singh, had discussed the programme with Kota Kinabalu City Hall Mayor, Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah, during a courtesy call at his office. The visit also served to introduce the association's new committee and to provide updates on its home care programme and upcoming activities. Proceeds from the event will go towards supporting PCAKK's ongoing efforts in providing compassionate care and support for patients facing life-limiting illnesses and their families. PCAKK expressed appreciation to the Mayor for his continued support in improving palliative care services and for supporting the upcoming fundraising concert-cum-dinner. The association continues to advocate for accessible and compassionate palliative care throughout Kota Kinabalu. Also present during the meeting were City Hall Deputy Director General (Management Services) Faradillah Abd Rani, and Information Officer Nurnabilah Berhaman. The PCAKK delegation included Management Advisor Datuk Margaret Lim, Honorary Secretary Datin Noridah Yassin, Resident Medical Officer Dr Christiannie Celestinus, Executive Secretary Benzie Richard, and Committee Members Dr Mathan Mohan Rao and Caroline Paxton. More needing palliative care

Published on: Sunday, May 18, 2025 Published on: Sun, May 18, 2025 Text Size: Tun Musa (4th from right) receiving a souvenir from Dr Jaswant. KOTA KINABALU: The Kota Kinabalu Palliative Care Association (PCAKK) is actively raising funds to meet the needs of a growing number of patients. Its President, Datuk Dr Jaswant Singh, said there had been a significant increase in patient numbers, which affected the operational costs of running the Home Care Programme. Advertisement 'Our patient numbers are increasing every year. Two years ago, we had 210 patients. In 2024, there were 280, and this year we are caring for 300 patients across Kota Kinabalu and areas within a 45-km radius, including Kinarut, Tamparuli and Tuaran. 'We have one medical officer and three nurses, including an executive admin and a driver. Every month, we spend between RM38,000 and RM40,000. 'Although the government provides grants, we still need to raise additional funds so we can assist more patients. 'So, we hope the public, corporations and other organisations can contribute,' he said after a courtesy visit to the Head of State, Tun Musa Aman, at Istana Seri Kinabalu on Wednesday. Advertisement Dr Jaswant, who is also a Consultant Oncologist and Palliative Care Physician, also welcomed the involvement of volunteers to help care for cancer patients and individuals with end-stage organ failure. 'The home care programme is a great initiative because we want patients to spend their final months with their families instead of being hospitalised. 'If they're in the hospital, it's hard on the family. Visiting is difficult because not everyone can visit them freely. 'So, we visit patients' homes daily, seeing about three or four patients each day, ensuring that every patient is seen at least once a week. If a patient's condition worsens, we will refer them to the hospital. 'We are trying to recruit more volunteers. Hopefully, more people will come forward. We are based in Taman Rose, Penampang,' he said. Meanwhile, PCAKK Patron Meng Tan said to increase fundraising efforts, the association would organise a charity concert themed 'Tina Heart of Gol' at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) on Aug 8. 'We will start selling tickets soon, possibly by next week. Concert ticket prices are RM20,000, RM15,000, RM10,000, RM5,000, RM3,000, and RM2,000. 'We are targeting to raise RM250,000 from ticket sales to support the association's funds. 'Our purpose here is to invite the Head of State to attend the Tina Turner tribute charity concert from Australia, which will begin at 7.30pm on Aug 8,' she said. PCAKK was officially established in 1998, although the charitable organisation began its work as early as 1994. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Its president, Datuk Dr Jaswant Singh, said there has been a significant rise in patient numbers, impacting the operational costs of their Home Care Programme. 'Our patient numbers increase every year. Two years ago, there were 210 patients; in 2024, there were 280, and this year, there are 300 patients in Kota Kinabalu and its surrounding areas, spanning 45 kilometers to Kinarut, Tamparuli and Tuaran. 'The government does provide grants, but we need to work harder to raise additional funds so we can help more patients. 'Therefore, we hope the public, corporations and others can contribute,' he explained. Jaswant, who is also a Consultant Oncologist and Palliative Care Specialist, welcomed volunteers to assist in caring for cancer patients and those with end-stage organ failure. 'The Home Care Programme is beneficial because we want patients to spend their remaining months with their families instead of in hospitals. 'If they are in the hospital, their families suffer. It's difficult for them to visit, as not everyone can do so. 'So, we visit patients at home daily, attending to three or four patients, ensuring each is seen at least once a week. If a patient is critically ill, we arrange hospital admission. 'We are trying to recruit more volunteers. Hopefully, more will come forward. Our center is located in Taman Rose, Penampang,' he told the media after paying a courtesy visit to Sabah Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman at Istana Seri Kinabalu on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Palliative Care Patron Meng Tan announced that to raise more funds, the association will organize a charity concert themed 'Tina Heart of Gold' at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) on August 8. 'We will start ticket sales soon, possibly next week. Ticket prices are RM20,000, RM15,000, RM10,000, RM5,000, RM3,000 and RM2,000.' 'We aim to raise RM250,000 from ticket sales to boost the association's funds. 'Our purpose here today is to invite His Excellency Tun to be the guest of honor at the charity concert featuring Tina Turner from Australia, starting at 7:30pm on August 8,' she said. Officially, PCAKK was established in 1998, but the charity had begun its operations earlier, around 1994.
