More needing palliative care

KOTA KINABALU: The Kota Kinabalu Palliative Care Association (PCAKK) is actively raising funds to meet the needs of a growing number of patients. Its President, Datuk Dr Jaswant Singh, said there had been a significant increase in patient numbers, which affected the operational costs of running the Home Care Programme.
Advertisement 'Our patient numbers are increasing every year. Two years ago, we had 210 patients. In 2024, there were 280, and this year we are caring for 300 patients across Kota Kinabalu and areas within a 45-km radius, including Kinarut, Tamparuli and Tuaran. 'We have one medical officer and three nurses, including an executive admin and a driver. Every month, we spend between RM38,000 and RM40,000. 'Although the government provides grants, we still need to raise additional funds so we can assist more patients. 'So, we hope the public, corporations and other organisations can contribute,' he said after a courtesy visit to the Head of State, Tun Musa Aman, at Istana Seri Kinabalu on Wednesday.
Advertisement Dr Jaswant, who is also a Consultant Oncologist and Palliative Care Physician, also welcomed the involvement of volunteers to help care for cancer patients and individuals with end-stage organ failure. 'The home care programme is a great initiative because we want patients to spend their final months with their families instead of being hospitalised. 'If they're in the hospital, it's hard on the family. Visiting is difficult because not everyone can visit them freely. 'So, we visit patients' homes daily, seeing about three or four patients each day, ensuring that every patient is seen at least once a week. If a patient's condition worsens, we will refer them to the hospital. 'We are trying to recruit more volunteers. Hopefully, more people will come forward. We are based in Taman Rose, Penampang,' he said. Meanwhile, PCAKK Patron Meng Tan said to increase fundraising efforts, the association would organise a charity concert themed 'Tina Heart of Gol' at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) on Aug 8. 'We will start selling tickets soon, possibly by next week. Concert ticket prices are RM20,000, RM15,000, RM10,000, RM5,000, RM3,000, and RM2,000. 'We are targeting to raise RM250,000 from ticket sales to support the association's funds. 'Our purpose here is to invite the Head of State to attend the Tina Turner tribute charity concert from Australia, which will begin at 7.30pm on Aug 8,' she said. Hawker dies of overexertion after 18-hour workdays to repay debt
SINGAPORE: A trader who worked more than 18 hours a day to repay debts has died from overexertion. Ang Yong Seh, 65, who co-owned a hawker stall along Sin Ming Drive in Upper Thomson, died earlier this year, Shin Min Daily News reported. His wife, Lilian Chua, said Ang had suffered from a persistent cold for three weeks but continued working until just four days before his death. "I was worried about his health, but he said, 'Don't worry, I still have a few good years.' "That night, he complained of breathing difficulties and was rushed to the hospital. By 5am, he was gone," Chua recalled. She stayed by his side at the hospital, urging him to keep fighting. "I told him, 'If I lose you, I won't have the strength to keep the stall going. We've always worked like one pair of hands. Now I've lost one.' "He couldn't speak, but he gripped my hand tightly. Only after I promised to keep the business going did he let go peacefully." Chua revealed that the couple had depleted their savings and fallen into significant debt during the Covid-19 pandemic, suffering losses for three consecutive years. "Our monthly rent was over S$9,000 (RM30,000), and we paid our workers S$4,000 (RM13,200). "But during the pandemic, some days we made barely S$100. It was unsustainable." To repay their debts, Ang pushed himself to the limit. "Before the pandemic, we took one or two days off each month. After that, we only rested for four days during Chinese New Year. "He would leave home by 5am and return around 11pm every day," she said. Although Ang had no chronic medical conditions, doctors confirmed that he died from physical overexertion and a severely weakened immune system.

Cannabis found in Haribo confectionery not from production process: Manufacturer

In late May, Haribo recalled packets of confectionery in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg after some were found to contain traces of cannabis. Advertisement The food safety body in the Netherlands (NVWA) said three 1-kilogram packs of Haribo Happy Cola F!ZZ were found to be contaminated. Haribo's investigation, and tests by an independent laboratory, found the cannabis had not entered the product during production, Haribo said. "We are pleased to confirm that the results of these tests are all negative and there are no signs of contamination," a Haribo spokesperson said. "Our internal investigations also show that there were no irregularities in our production processes." Haribo was still working closely with authorities to determine how the cannabis could have gotten into the confectionery. Advertisement NVWA had also warned that consuming the affected cola bottles could lead to health problems, including dizziness. Several people, including children, had complained of feeling unwell. Sabah dive club to hold safety talk after recent fatalities

Club president Sim Fui said safety must always remain a diver's top priority, warning that fatal incidents often stem from neglecting basic procedures. Advertisement He cited recent cases, including a Malaysian diver who died in strong currents near Pulau Weh and two Chinese nationals who drowned in separate Sabah diving mishaps. Two experts, Dr Eugene Tan and Warrant Officer Almudi Eskal from the Armed Forces Hospital, will lead the session focusing on medical emergencies and technical diving safety.
