More info A police dog who served in North Wales for years has died. PD Toro was a Dutch Herder who was part of the Cheshire and North Wales dog section. Over his relatively short career he tracked down hundreds of suspects. He also helped to find missing people. In 2022, Toro, then aged three, and his handler PC Chris McDonough were named the UK's top police dog team at the Thin Blue Paw Awards. This followed 20 arrests in a year. They had also helped patrol the G7 summit in Cornwall in 2021 and made a name for themselves on the Channel 5 programme Motorway Cops. (Image: North Wales Police) Sadly, the Cheshire and North Wales Police Dogs, have announced that Toro had passed away in the last few days due to a number of medical issues. They said: "It's with great sadness that we announce the passing of PD Toro. Toro had been dealing with a number of medical issues and sadly crossed the rainbow bridge today with his handler by his side. "Toro was a formidable Police Dog. During his service he found hundreds of suspects and missing people and along with his handler, PC McDonough, was named the Crime Fighting Duo of 2022. He truly was one of a kind. "Thank you for everything, Toro and rest in peace. You will be forever missed by us all especially your handler and family." There were thousands of comments in response as people paid tribute to the police dog and expressed their sympathies to officers, particularly Toro's handler. One person wrote: "Not all heroes wear capes, just collars." A former dog handler said: "Always so sad when fellow dog handlers loose his buddy I had three PDs; Karl, Major and Ace. Dog unit pays tribute to 'formidable' police dog Toro

PD Toro was part of the Cheshire and North Wales Police Dogs Unit. The vital unit provides general purpose, firearms support and specialist search dogs. These furry friends support officers' ranging policing activities – from tackling serious and organised crime to helping bring vulnerable people back to a place of safety. The unit has today (June 30) announced Toro's death following a 'number of medical issues'. Officers described him as a 'formidable' police dog who helped track down 'hundreds' of suspects, as well as missing people.
