Middle East Tensions And Maritime Disputes Among Key Issues In Dewan Rakyat

Malaysia's short- and long-term plans to address ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East took centre stage in today's Dewan Rakyat sitting, as outlined in the Order Paper on Parliament's official website. Mohd Sany Hamzan (PH-Hulu Langat) raised the issue during the Minister's Question Time, seeking clarification from the Prime Minister on the government's approach to the matter. Also under the spotlight, Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee (PN-Beluran) questioned how the International Court of Justice's 2002 decision affirming Malaysia's sovereignty over Ligitan and Sipadan Islands may affect the determination of maritime boundaries in the Sulawesi Sea, particularly over blocks ND6 (Block Y) and ND7 (Block Z) shared with Indonesia. During the oral question session, Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman (PN-Bachok) requested an update from the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry on government efforts to manage tariff disputes involving the United States and the role of state governments in the process. Meanwhile, Datuk Seri Sh Mohmed Puzi Sh Ali (BN-Pekan) asked the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security to detail the financial impact of subsidy cuts on the egg market, including how much savings have been generated. The sitting also included the first reading of the Poisons (Amendment) Bill 2025, and the second readings of the Street, Drainage and Building (Amendment) Bill 2025, and the Whistleblower Protection (Amendment) Bill 2025. This second meeting of the fourth session of the 15th Parliament will span 24 days, with the 13th Malaysia Plan set to be tabled on July 31. Related

Chaos in Dewan Rakyat over Shahidan Kassim's remarks

KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat briefly erupted in chaos on Monday when Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim (PN-Arau) remarked that some lawmakers behaved as if they had just come out of a pen (terlepas kandang). The remarks drew a reaction from a government backbencher who believed they were directed towards him. "Someone has been causing disruptions as if they have just come out of a pen (terlepas kandang)," Shahidan said during his debate on the United States reciprocal tariffs in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (May 5). Mohd Sany Hamzan (PH-Hulu Langat) claimed the remarks were aimed at him. Sany cited Standing Order 36(6), which prohibits MPs from making defamatory statements towards other lawmakers. "He mentioned a pen (kandang). And it was directed to Hulu Langat. Pens are for animals," Sany said before going on a tirade against Shahidan. "Speaker, I want him to retract. This is rude," he added. A shouting match erupted between the two MPs even after their microphones were turned off. Shahidan said he did not direct the remarks to Sany, although Sany insisted that he had mentioned him. Deputy Speaker Alice Lau, who was presiding over the meeting, said she would have to check the Hansard to see if Shahidan had indeed made the remarks, before allowing proceedings of the House to carry on.

'Terlepas kandang' remark leads to verbal clash in Dewan Rakyat

KUALA LUMPUR: Tempers flared in the Lower House today after an opposition member of parliament made a comment about the behaviour of a government lawmaker. The exchange began when Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim (PN-Arau), during his debate on the United States (US) reciprocal tariffs, claimed that Mohd Sany Hamzan (PH-Hulu Langat) had disrupted his debate and behaved erratically. He also described Sany as an individual who is difficult to control, using the phrase 'terlepas kandang'. This led to a sharp rebuttal from Sany, who raised Standing Order 36(6), which prohibits MPs from making defamatory statements about other members. Sany argued that Shahidan's comments, specifically using the term 'kandang', were an insult. "A member (of the House) should not make malicious statements about another member. He (Shahidan) mentioned cage (kandang), referring to Hulu Langat. "I ask him to retract it. This is disrespectful, rude," he said. In response, Shahidan continued with his debate, asserting that he had not specifically targeted any individual. However, the exchange became increasingly heated, with both MPs engaging in a war of words. The exchange was then stopped by Deputy Speaker Alice Lau, who asked Shahidan to continue his debate session. She also told Sany that the Hansard will be checked for accuracy.
