Chaos in Dewan Rakyat over Shahidan Kassim's remarks
KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat briefly erupted in chaos on Monday when Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim (PN-Arau) remarked that some lawmakers behaved as if they had just come out of a pen (terlepas kandang).
The remarks drew a reaction from a government backbencher who believed they were directed towards him.
"Someone has been causing disruptions as if they have just come out of a pen (terlepas kandang)," Shahidan said during his debate on the United States reciprocal tariffs in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (May 5).
Mohd Sany Hamzan (PH-Hulu Langat) claimed the remarks were aimed at him.
Sany cited Standing Order 36(6), which prohibits MPs from making defamatory statements towards other lawmakers.
"He mentioned a pen (kandang). And it was directed to Hulu Langat. Pens are for animals," Sany said before going on a tirade against Shahidan.
"Speaker, I want him to retract. This is rude," he added.
A shouting match erupted between the two MPs even after their microphones were turned off.
Shahidan said he did not direct the remarks to Sany, although Sany insisted that he had mentioned him.
Deputy Speaker Alice Lau, who was presiding over the meeting, said she would have to check the Hansard to see if Shahidan had indeed made the remarks, before allowing proceedings of the House to carry on.

Johari also said that the outcome of the discussions is expected to be announced soon. 'We are working with the Public Service Department and several other parties to ensure that the certificate we issue carries merit. Otherwise, it will be just another ordinary certificate -- we want it to have value,' he added. Meanwhile, Ya'cob said several PLKN 3.0 trainees have successfully qualified to join the Malaysian Armed Forces and will begin training in the next intake at the Basic Army Training Centre. 'If we look at the previous intake, around 60 per cent of those who participated in PLKN 3.0 chose to serve in uniformed forces, either in the regular or reserve units,' he also said.

MIRI (June 12): Miri MP Chiew Choon Man has urged Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas to review and expedite the distribution of flood relief aid following growing complaints from victims in his constituency who have yet to receive the assistance. In a formal letter addressed to the Deputy Premier, Chiew highlighted the devastating impact of the early 2025 floods, which he described as among the worst in Sarawak's history. Thousands of residents in Miri suffered extensive property damage and income loss. He noted that while the federal government had allocated Bantuan Wang Ihsan (BWI) amounting to RM1,000 per family in March this year, many flood victims ― both those who took shelter at Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) and those who did not ― have reported not receiving the promised aid. 'My office has received numerous complaints and grievances that, to date, many victims in the Miri parliamentary area have not received the aid. They are in urgent need of financial support to restore their homes and basic needs,' Chiew wrote in his letter. To address the issue, the MP proposed several measures for the Deputy Premier's consideration: Chiew suggested implementing a phased disbursement model, similar to the approach adopted by the Johor government, which began issuing aid in stages shortly after the disaster.
