Fezile Ngubane is a victim, not involved in Olorato Mongale's killing: police

KwaZulu-Natal man Fezile Ngubane who was initially identified as a suspect sought by police in the Olorato Mongale murder and said to be in a syndicate targeting young women has been cleared. Mongale was last seen leaving her flat in northern Johannesburg for a date with a man who called himself 'John' on Sunday afternoon. Her body was later discovered in Lombardy East near Alexandra. The white VW Polo used to pick up Mongale was found at a panel-beating workshop in Phoenix in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday. Police initially identified Philangenkosi Makhanya and Ngubane as people of interest in the murder. On Thursday morning police identified a third man, Bongani Mthimkhulu, who is a friend of Makhanya, as an additional suspect. National police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe said on Saturday Ngubane's father handed him over to KwaMashu police on Friday when he learnt his son was being sought by police in the Mongale murder case. 'A multidisciplinary team led by the deputy provincial commissioner for crime detection in Gauteng, Maj-Gen Mbuso Khumalo, the SAPS national anti-kidnapping task team, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provincial investigating unit (PIU) have now cleared Ngubane after a thorough interview and preliminary investigation.' A preliminary report found Ngubane washes cars for a living and stays in the same neighbourhood as Makhanya, who died during a confrontation with police at an Amanzimtoti flat on Friday. Mathe said Makhanya allegedly identified Ngubane as a soft target and took his ID smart card and used it to Rica SIM cards. These were alleged used by Makhanya to commit kidnapping and robbery involving young women. Makhanya is alleged to have also used Ngubane's bank card at various clothing stores. Ngubane's ID was found as part of a batch of 27 ID smart cards found on Friday in Makhanya's possession at a flat belonging to a man who rents vehicles. Mathe said the parents of one of the two suspects were released after they deposed statements. 'Police are sitting with at least 20 cases where women have come forward identifying the suspects as those that kidnapped and robbed them. Some of these cases were reported in Potchefstroom, Bloemfontein, Midrand, Ogies and Nelspruit in Mpumalanga, Pretoria and Johannesburg.' She said the search for Mthimkhulu continues.

LDA speeds up road work on Green Corridor project

1 2 Lucknow: The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) is set to expedite the construction of a 24-metre-wide, four-lane road that will link Shaheed Path and Kisan Path as part of its Green Corridor project. The road is being developed along the right bank of the Gomti and aims to enhance connectivity and reduce traffic congestion in the region. LDA vice-chairman Prathamesh Kumar inspected the site on Wednesday and directed officials to start earth-levelling and identify all land falling within the proposed embankment alignment. A joint team comprising officials from engineering zone-1, the land acquisition section and the project implementation unit (PIU) was formed to resolve alignment issues and remove encroachments. Kumar proposed setting up a site office behind the Ekana cricket stadium for better project monitoring. He also reviewed the proposed 45-metre-wide road adjacent to the stadium, in line with the city's master plan. In CG City, he assessed progress on cofferdam construction in the wetland area, where a 6-metre-wide pathway is being developed. Lko's Shaheed Path-Kisan Path 4-lane road work to accelerate

The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has directed officials to speed up the construction of a 24-metre-wide four-lane road and a dam on the right bank of the Gomti River to establish a direct connection between Shaheed Path and Kisan Path. The initiative is part of LDA's Green Corridor project aimed at improving intra-city connectivity. LDA vice chairman Prathamesh Kumar, who conducted a spot inspection on Wednesday, instructed officials to begin soil levelling on the identified land for the proposed dam without delay. A joint task force comprising members from engineering zone-1, the acquisition section, and the project implementation unit (PIU) has been formed to address construction hurdles. To strengthen ground-level supervision, a site office will be set up behind Ekana Cricket Stadium, staffed with personnel from key departments, LDA officials said. Kumar also reviewed the 45-metre-wide road planned under the Ekana Stadium's parallel master plan and issued implementation directions. He then visited CG City's wetland area, where a 6-metre-wide pathway is being developed along a coffer dam. During the visit, Kumar called for an increase in manpower to expedite the work. On being informed about pending land acquisition issues affecting the pathway's progress, he instructed Naib Tehsildar Amit Tripathi to complete land demarcation and marking within a week in coordination with the revenue department. Later, the vice chairman inspected the under-construction Tower-A and Tower-B of the CSI Tower project in CG City, being built by a private developer. Observing sluggish progress, he directed officials to issue a final notice to the contractor. He warned that continued delays would lead to withholding of payments, forfeiture of security deposits, and blacklisting of the firm. At Sanskriti School, Kumar directed officials to complete all pending sports facilities within a month. He also set deadlines for finalising external development, basement flooring, drainage, and other civil and electrical works. LDA chief engineer Navneet Sharma, PIU in-charge AK Sengar, executive engineers Manoj Sagar and Ajit Kumar, and other senior officials were present during the inspection, the LDA press release stated.

Accident hotspots on Trichy-Chennai NH get 57 new streetlights

Trichy: National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has installed 57 streetlights at five spots on Trichy-Chennai NH identified as accident-prone hotspots in suburbs of Trichy. The locations on a 4-km stretch were selected based on the suggestions from the district road safety council. NHAI said the new streetlights were set up at Koothur, Pallividai, Samayapuram, Panamangalam, and Palur on the highway where there was no streetlight. In Panamangalam, Pallividai, and Palur areas, people heading to work for Trichy had been crossing the NH amid speeding vehicles. A police constable who crossed the highway near Panamangalam was fatally knocked down by an unidentified vehicle in Feb. During the recent district road safety meeting, members apprised NHAI of the multiple dark stretches posing a threat for two-wheelers and pedestrians crossing the roads during odd hours. Subsequently, NHAI's Trichy project implementation unit (PIU) conducted a safety audit to identify vulnerable spots and installed streetlights. "The new streetlights are not yet connected to electricity. NHAI should expedite the process to illuminate the new lights," P Aiyarappan, a member of the road safety council, said. NHAI officials said that Tangedco Trichy has been approached to provide new electricity connections under non-commercial tariff to reduce the electricity expense. "We are following it up with Tangedco. Soon, the new streetlights will be illuminated," a NHAI official said. Meanwhile, locals welcomed the move to provide additional lights on the NH and added the need for more lights in other stretches. "New streetlights should also be installed between Mannarpuram and Panjapur Integrated Bus Terminus (IBT) on Trichy-Madurai NH. Despite being within the city, the highway remains dark," S R Kishorekumar, a Trichy-based advocate, said. NHAI said it would discuss with Trichy corporation to know whether it could sponsor the new lights in the stretch.
