Thousands duped in ‘Spin Gift' scam in Madanapalle; probe underway

Madanapalle (Annamayya district): A major financial fraud has come to light in Madanapalle, where thousands of people have allegedly been cheated under a dubious gift-and-return income scheme. The racket, which is being likened to a 'chain-link' scam, has left many residents reeling from losses and demanding justice. The scheme, promoted under the banner of 'Spin Gift' by a private entity named 'Aara', reportedly lured more than 6,000 individuals with promises of daily returns and luxury gifts. According to police sources, victims were encouraged to invest one-time amounts ranging from Rs 2,000 to Rs 20,000. In return, they were assured of steady income and expensive gifts such as smart phones, laptops, bikes and even cars. The alleged mastermind, Mohan Babu of Madanapalle, is said to have played a central role in promoting the scheme. Using word-of-mouth campaigns and community connections, he allegedly built trust among locals, some of whom were initially handed out gifts to reinforce the legitimacy of the programme. However, the distribution soon came to a halt, and returns stopped, triggering alarm and suspicion among the later investors. As the scheme abruptly collapsed, hundreds of affected residents found themselves without the promised money or prizes. Many victims, now facing financial strain, have approached the police with complaints. Police have begun a detailed investigation into the case. Preliminary findings indicate that the scam may have extended its reach beyond Madanapalle, affecting individuals across other regions in the Annamayya district as well. Officials are currently verifying the number of investors and the total amount amassed by the organisers. Meanwhile, the police have urged citizens to remain alert and avoid falling prey to unverified financial schemes that promise unusually high returns. They assured swift action against the culprits and have asked more victims to come forward with evidence or details of their investments.

‘Multiple properties and a tiger skin': Deputy Commissioner in MP's Tribal Welfare Department faces corruption case

The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) has registered a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act against Jagdish Prasad Sarvate, the Deputy Commissioner in the Tribal Welfare Department, after an investigation found that he allegedly amassed assets worth Rs 2.38 crore beyond his known sources of income during a ten-year period. A tiger skin was also recovered from his Jabalpur residence, prompting a separate wildlife offence case. Sarvate did not respond to calls and messages seeking a comment. A zero FIR was initially lodged in Jabalpur on July 21 and later forwarded to Bhopal for formal registration. The FIR notes that Sarvate entered government service on September 7, 1989, and joined his present cadre on December 13, 2004. His salary records were collected from the Jabalpur treasury office and the State Bank of India, where he maintains his salary account. The investigators alleged that 'the total expenditure of Rs 3.95 crore far exceeds his legal income of Rs 1.57 crore, resulting in disproportionate assets of Rs 2.38 crore.' The EOW states that since the 'allegations of amassing disproportionate assets appear prima facie established, a case has been registered… against the accused.' During the investigation, Sarvate was found to have allegedly purchased a commercial plot worth Rs 46.38 lakh and a residential house worth Rs 16.52 lakh in Mocha village, Mandla district, the FIR states. It also states that a 'resort is under construction at the combined location, with an estimated cost of Rs 20 lakh.' His Bhopal residence was allegedly found to have construction worth Rs 50 lakh. Additionally, he allegedly purchased 4.046 hectares of agricultural land in Talla village in Umaria district for Rs 1.53 crore; multiple parcels of farmland in Pataur village, Umaria district, for Rs 22.6 lakh; and a plot in Kohka, Seoni district, for Rs 15.9 lakh. During a search of Sarvate's ancestral house in Adhartal, Jabalpur, EOW teams allegedly discovered a tiger skin being used as a seat cover. Officials said the skin appeared to be around 30 years old. The Forest Department was informed, and a separate offence is set to be registered under Sections of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
