Asanele Velebayi's new shirt number at Kaizer Chiefs revealed
Kaizer Chiefs have issued a shirt number that will be worn by their newest signing Asanele Velebayi this season. On Tuesday, Velebayi became Amakhosi's seventh signing of the current transfer window, joining them on a free transfer. This followed the PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber (PSL DRC) ruling that declared him a free agent. Velebayi was previously on the books of Cape Town Spurs who took the player to the PSL DRC, claiming he still belonged to them. Now, Velebayi was unveiled by Chiefs on Tuesday, and he was handed the No.17 jersey. The shirt number was used by Edson Castillo over the past two seasons, but it became popular when George Lebese wore it with pride during his time with Chiefs. Kaizer Chiefs latest: Where will Asanele Velebayi fit in at Naturena?
Asanele Velebayi is officially a Kaizer Chiefs player following the PSL DRC ruling to declare him a free agent on Monday. Of course, Cape Town Spurs feel cheated on by the latest developments given that they once wanted R10 million for Velebayi. However, that's not how the PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber (PSL DRC) saw the matter as they ruled in Velebayi's favour. Now, having been officially unveiled by Amakhosi on Tuesday, The South African takes a look at where the 22-year-old will fit in at Naturena. Velebayi is renowned for his speed and skill to eliminate opposition defenders, and this is the kind of player Chiefs needed. Given their quick transition play under Nasreddine Nabi, Chiefs need a speedy player to get into the opposition box as quickly as possible. Pule Mmodi has been that player for Chiefs over the past two seasons, but he's sometimes flat, and ended up not giving his team the much needed width. The majority of Chiefs wingers are not necessarily able to take on defenders, and often lose possession cheaply in the final third. And should Velebayi be given that role to play – either on the left or on the write wing – he shouldn't be expected to do much of a defending. After all, Velebayi was signed to strengthen Amakhosi's attack and help them score goals. Good news for Kaizer Chiefs as PSL DRC delivers ruling on Velebayi
The PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber (PSL DRC) has delivered a ruling on the matter between Cape Town Spurs and Asanele Velebayi. Spurs have been refusing to let Velebayi go simply because he was contracted to them before their relegation to the ABC Motsepe League. Their relegation meant all the contracted players are free agents as the ABC Motsepe League is an amateur league. However, Spurs had thought otherwise, and were against the idea of losing their top stars, including Velebayi, for free. The other two are Luke Baartman and Liam Bern who are expected to join Chiefs and AmaZulu respectively. What's left is for Spurs to issue the speedy winger his clearance so that he can complete his four-year deal with Amakhosi. The ruling on the matter involving Baartman and Bern has not yet been delivered, but expectations are that they will also be declared free agents.
