2 Main Line public school districts named top 5 in Pennsylvania, but Allegheny County dominates list

Southwestern Pennsylvania schools dominated a statewide ranking of public school districts published this month, but a few in the Philadelphia area made the top 10. The Pittsburgh Business Times recently published its 2025 School Guide, which ranks districts based on the three most recent years of scores on the PSSA and Keystone Exams standardized tests. And in the past year, the Top 5 have maintained their standards of excellence — and retained their spots on the list for the second year in a row. Fox Chapel Area School District in Allegheny County topped the list once again, per PBT. Placing second was the Upper St. Clair School District, while Kobe Bryant's alma mater, Lower Merion, came in third. Radnor Township School District in Delaware County and Peters Township School District in Washington County rounded out the leaders. Allegheny County had more districts in the top 10 than any other county. You can see the full list and where districts in your area rank on

Even with some families in the dark, Fox Chapel to resume in-person classes on Tuesday

Students in the Fox Chapel School District will face some disrupted bus routes on Tuesday, as it will be their first day back in school in about a week. Dave Pechersky lives on Windsor Road and has kids within the district. 'Tuesday was they're last day in school. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday there was no school. Today they had a virtual day, but we didn't have internet, so they were using hot spots to get onto their school iPads and it's been pretty disruptive.' Pechersky is among the parents who were told their students will have to walk a bit further to their bus stop on Tuesday due to continued road closures in the area. His son Theo is 12 years old. 'It makes me feel a little crazy to think I have to walk over powerlines and things like that. It's not a normal school day,' Theo said. Neighbors on Windsor Road are still without power. They are forced to drive under power lines and around damage, now almost a week after the storm hit. 'They have to rebuild the lines that go around the entire circle. So we are not exactly sure when that is going to happen,' Dave Pechersky said. Fox Chapel was in the middle of PSSA testing during the storm and will resume in-person classes on Tuesday. Theo said he's nervous to see what school work he will be thrown back into,bBut he said there were some upsides. 'But at the same time, I get five days off of school, so that's pretty nice,' Theo said. Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts. The PSSAs fall on Take Your Child to Work Day this year, upsetting some parents

The annual Pennsylvania System of School Assessment, or PSSA, tests will be given statewide on the same day as Take Your Child to Work Day. And that is not going over well with some parents. PSSAs are very important to school districts because they determine things like funding, school rankings and other things. But Take Your Child to Work Day is equally important to parents. The PSSA, statewide testing days, which are mandatory for every Pennsylvania student, overlap with this year's Take Your Child to Work Day, which always falls on the fourth Thursday in April every year. "Well, it's two separate days no matter how you look at it. If you're gonna Take Your Child to Work Day, that should be one day, and then testing is another day," said Terry Lippert, who has grandkids in the South Park School District. The problem: neither wants to change their days. The state decides PSSA days. The districts have no say and must comply. Take Your Child to Work Day is not only important to parents, but many companies go all out for that day with special programs for the kids. The organization that heads up the national day doesn't believe it should have to change its traditional day. Some parents don't want to make that choice: work day or testing day. However, many parents don't realize their child can usually make up that testing day. At South Park schools, for example, the parent just fills out a permission form found on their website. The district will then retest the students on different days. The superintendent of South Park Schools told KDKA-TV: "Take Your Child to Work Day offers students a unique opportunity to gain real-world experience, but its annual scheduling within the testing window can create challenges for both students and educators. While make-up opportunities are available, students perform best when testing in their originally scheduled environment."

PSSA partners with Hankook for new contingency program

Prototype Sprint Series Association presented by Hankook (PSSA) will debut a new contingency program in 2025, providing top finishers in the series with free or discounted Hankook tires. Formed in conjunction with the presenting series sponsor, Hankook Tire America Corp., the program will award two free tires to the first-place finisher, one free tire to the second-place finisher, and a $100 discount certificate to the third-place finisher. Prizes will be distributed based on the competitors' finishing position in Feature Race 2 during each of PSSA's 11 events in 2025. 'I have to thank Hankook for their continued support of PSSA,' said Rob Elson, PSSA Series Manager. 'They're a class act partner, and are always looking for ways to support and grow the series. Since PSSA's first season in 2023, there has been a lot of interest around the series, with new drivers and cars looking to get involved. We have some great year-end prizes, but this contingency program will be a great weekly incentive to reward our top-performing drivers.' 'We're thrilled to support PSSA and its growth through a new contingency program,' said Danny van Dongen, President of Hankook Tire America Corp. 'We're proud to have everyone racing on Hankook tires, and hope that this program, with the opportunity to earn free or discounted tires, gives competitors that much more incentive to come race with us.' Hosting prototype racecars in a sprint race format at some of the most iconic road courses in America, PSSA welcomes more than 30 eligible chassis to compete in one of four different classes. Drivers contend for regional titles with champions crowned in both PSSA East and PSSA West, while manufacturers go head to head for the annual Constructors Championship. All competitors are mandated to use Hankook racing tires. With between two and three races each weekend, contingency prizes will be awarded for the top finishers in each eligible class during PSSA's Feature Race 2. To be eligible, there must be a minimum of six cars entered in the class, and all cars must compete on Hankook racing tires and have the prescribed Hankook identification present on their cars. Further rules can be found in the 2025 PSSA rulebook. PSSA East will kick off its six-race 2025 season at Sebring International Raceway for the Sebring SpeedTour, Feb. 20-23. Just a few weeks later, PSSA West will kick off its seven-race campaign with the Buttonwillow SpeedTour at California's Buttonwillow Raceway Park, March 14-16.
