Realme India banks on refreshed smartphone portfolio, premium push to gain share: Francis Wong
NEW DELHI: Realme said it has adopted a leaner smartphone portfolio in India, and expects its mid-premium and premium models to drive growth in the latter half of 2025 and in 2026, following several quarters of volume declines. 'In 2025, we initiated a strategic portfolio reboot to simplify and strengthen our product lineup, focusing on three core series – the GT Series, the Number Series, and the P Series,' Francis Wong , chief marketing officer (CMO), Realme India , told ETTelecom . 'We have already begun implementing this focused strategy and the results are becoming visible. Consumers can expect a tighter, more purposeful lineup in the coming quarters,' he added. The top executive cited that the brand has removed the 'Plus' variants from its recently launched Realme 15 series, and will instead power its 'Pro' models with top-of-the-line features. 'The GT Series is positioned for premium innovation. The Number Series remains our offline backbone, and the P Series continues to lead our online-first momentum,' Wong said, noting that the 'portfolio reset' aims to simplify choices for consumers, reduce redundancy, and deliver more consistency in both product experience and positioning. Realme India market share Realme ranked fourth in India's smartphone market (by volume) in the April-June 2025 quarter with a 10% share, which was, however down from the 13% share it held in the corresponding quarter last year. Canalys, in a separate report, said Realme's shipments fell by 17% year-on-year to 3.6 million units in Q2 2025. Canalys noted that a softness in Realme's online channel was partially offset by offline gains from the C73, C75 and 14X, cumulatively contributing 35% of its shipments. Counterpoint, too, said that Realme has also been strengthening its offline presence to boost visibility and scale higher average selling price (ASP) models. In the quarter, Realme expanded into the ultra-premium segment by launching its GT 7 Dream Edition in India at ₹49,999 (16GB RAM+512GB memory). The co-branded smartphone, aimed at younger buyers, features a premium Aston Martin Racing Green finish, Aerodynamic Flow lines design, and an engraved Silver Wings Emblem. According to the top executive, Realme is scaling up its GT-series equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) features to deepen its premium segment push, while mainline channel-focused Number-series continues to be a volume driver, and ecommerce-driven P-series is aimed at young professionals and students. 'By democratising the premium experience and streamlining our offerings, we believe our revised product strategy sets a strong foundation for 2025 and 2026,' Wong said. He revealed that the Realme P3 Ultra 5G topped the pre-order charts, shipping over 3 million units globally, and the Realme 15 series saw a 30% increase in sales over the previous generation, with the majority of the growth driven by stronger offline traction. 'These results show that our offline retail investments and design-first product thinking are paying off. We expect the 15 Series to drive continued growth through the festive season and further strengthen our position in the mid-premium segment,' he said, adding that Realme is expanding its premium offline footprint to support GT growth through large-format retail (LFR) and curated experiences.

HUAWEI's Pura 80 Series: designed to impress, engineered to capture
WHEN HUAWEI unveiled the Pura Series in 2024, it marked more than just a name change. The rebrand from the iconic P Series to 'Pura' signalled a shift towards a more style-conscious, experience-driven device while preserving HUAWEI's camera legacy. Particularly with the flagship HUAWEI Pura 80 Ultra model, the brand reinforces this promise. Fusing high fashion with pro-grade photography tools, this smartphone lineup delivers what many users truly want: the ability to capture beautiful photos effortlessly, while looking great doing it. The Pura-suit of photography The Pura 80 Ultra brings a refined, runway-inspired design that makes a bold style statement. Its unique edge-to-edge display curves seamlessly into the body, while the camera module features the instantly recognisable dazzling forward symbol with a radiant sunburst pattern. Available in elegant colours like Prestige Gold and Golden Black, the Ultra variant looks as good as the images it captures. Zoom with confidence The HUAWEI Pura 80 Ultra touts what is said to be the industry's first switchable dual telephoto camera that will be a game-changer for mobile zoom. This self-developed telephoto module seamlessly switches between a 3.7x and 9.4x optical zoom lens, utilising the same 1/1.28-inch sensor and advanced optics to maintain clarity even at high magnification. Whether it is the moon, your favourite idol performing at a concert, wildlife or intricate textures, users can zoom in to capture fine details or distant subjects with less distortion and more control – even under low light conditions. Cinematic imaging in your pocket HUAWEI's imaging pedigree takes centre stage with the Pura 80 Ultra. The device features a novel one-inch Ultra Lighting HDR Camera with a dynamic range of 16EV, which is said to be the highest dynamic range ever on a smartphone, similar to what is used in professional cinema cameras. This gives users unprecedented control over light and depth of field, enabling crisp portraits, smooth background blur and brilliant shots in all lighting conditions. With a dynamic range of 16EV, it manages extreme lighting scenarios with ease, capturing rich detail in both shadows and highlights. Dynamic range refers to how well a camera can balance bright and dark areas in one image. The higher the EV, the better the tricky lighting. The result? Vivid photos and videos that look lifelike, cinematic and effortlessly professional — achievable through HUAWEI's self-developed Triple Light Enhancement Technology. Shot by HUAWEI Pura 80 Ultra, this image showcases the 1-inch Ultra Lighting HDR Camera, balancing highlights and shadows in one image. Pro-level shots Brace yourself for what is lauded to be the industry's largest sensor. Powered by the same 1-inch sensor as the Pura 80 Ultra, the 1-inch sensor in the Pura 80 Pro offers unmatched light capture, enabling stunning detail in colour and clarity even in dim or low-light conditions, both day and night. This is complemented with an Ultra Lighting Macro Telephoto Camera in the Pura 80 Pro, which lets you get incredibly close to your subject up to 5cm while maintaining colour accuracy through HUAWEI's Ultra Chroma XMAGE imaging technology. The camera features a massive f/2.1 aperture that captures 40% more light compared to traditional cameras. This allows for brighter, sharper images even in lower light conditions. Macro photography fans will appreciate the clarity, while casual users benefit from the ease of capturing stunning close-up shots. Smart features, smooth experience The Pura 80 Series also brings intelligent enhancements to the user experience. AI Imaging helps optimise shots in real-time with Best Expression to seize your best moments. The AI Smart Control offers intuitive shortcuts where you can just double tap the smart controls button to open a preset feature or app. AI Noise Cancellation ensures clearer calls even in noisy environments. The AI Remove feature further enhances user convenience by intelligently eliminating unwanted objects or distractions from photos, making editing quicker and more intuitive. Built to last Durability is another key highlight. The Pura 80 Ultra uses second-generation Crystal Armour Kunlun Glass, a material developed in-house by HUAWEI. It enhances drop resistance by 25 times and scratch resistance by 16 times without compromising display responsiveness or clarity. The HUAWEI Pura 80 Pro, on the other hand, uses Kunlun Glass 2nd Generation, which is 20 times tougher than standard glass. A large 5170mAh battery, combined with 100W wired and 80W wireless HUAWEI SuperCharge support, means users can also enjoy rapid charging and all-day performance with less downtime. More value, more benefits The HUAWEI Pura 80 Series also offers seamless compatibility with essential apps via AppGallery, delivering a secure, smooth experience with every download. The 'HUAWEI Pura 80 Series 2025 Sales Start Campaign' will run from Aug 2 to Dec 31, where customers who purchase any model of the HUAWEI Pura 80 Series during this period are eligible to claim exclusive AppGallery benefits worth up to RM2,978, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Realme ramps up R&D investments in AI, 5G for smartphones: Chase Xu
Realme , Chinese mobile handset maker, is ramping up its research and development (R&D) investments to integrate technologies like AI and 5G into its devices, aiming to stay ahead of the curve and meet the fast-evolving needs of Indian consumers, according to Chase Xu , vice president & chief marketing officer (CMO). In an interview with Mansi Taneja, he says, despite a slowdown in the overall market, Realme has been able to register growth. Edited Excerpts. How is India's market strategy shaping up? Have you been able to meet your market share targets? India continues to be a cornerstone of Realme's global strategy and despite a challenging start to 2025, the brand has shown strong signs of recovery. According to Canalys, in Q1 2025, Realme shipped 3.5 million units in India, capturing an 11% market share, up from 10% in Q1 2024, marking a 3% year-over-year growth despite an overall market decline of 8%. This growth is attributed to Realme's recalibrated channel strategy, focusing on deeper retail penetration and tighter sell-out coordination. Nearly 58% of Realme's shipments came from offline channels, which shows our focus on strengthening physical retail presence. We have set an ambitious goal to elevate our market share in India from 12% in 2024 to 18% by the end of 2025, marking a 50% growth. This strategy is centered on expanding our presence in the mid-to-premium smartphone segment, particularly within the ₹20,000–₹40,000 price range. We have intensified collaborations with major e-commerce platforms like Flipkart and Amazon to enhance our online reach. How are you adapting your strategy to stay competitive in such a challenging smartphone market in India? We are focusing on localized designs and features tailored to the preferences of young consumers. Besides, we are making substantial investments in R&D to integrate next-gen technologies like AI and 5G into our devices, aligning with the rapidly evolving expectations of Indian users. A well-calibrated product strategy has been behind our success. The launch of the GT7 Series — with Krafton to deliver 120fps gaming in BGMI—targets India's thriving gaming community and performance centric users. Realme's push into the mid-premium segment with its P Series and 14 Pro Series has struck a chord with consumers seeking a blend of innovation and value. These strategic moves are helping Realme stay relevant and competitive despite broader market headwinds. Do you plan to streamline your product portfolio and focus on specific flagship launches? We are confident that the newly launched GT7 series and an upcoming number series will accelerate growth in the Indian market. Also, we plan to reduce the number of launches in other product lines, including the number and P series, in order to prioritize quality and user experience. You recently announced collaboration with a luxury automotive designer for the GT7 Series. What has been the strategy behind it? A shared pursuit of performance, precision and design excellence led to Realme's collaboration with the Aston Martin Aramco F1 Team. In its quest to elevate our flagship offering, we saw an opportunity to partner with a brand that embodies speed, sophistication and legacy. Aston Martin's rich heritage in motorsport and luxury design provided the ideal canvas to co-create a smartphone that blends cutting-edge technology with refined aesthetics. The result is more than a device—it's a statement of aspiration and identity, pushing the boundaries of what a smartphone can represent. Creative collaborations have been central to Realme's design evolution and youth appeal. From working with Matteo Menotto (ex-Gucci) and Ollivier Savéo (ex-Rolex) to partnering with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston for a Monet-inspired design and Danish studio Valeur Designers for Nordic craftsmanship, we have consistently blended technology with high-end aesthetics. These partnerships have helped Realme stay culturally relevant, build emotional connections and grow its global presence among Gen Z and millennials seeking style, identity and innovation.
