Bhool Chuk Maaf box office collection Day 8: Rajkummar Rao-Wamiqa Gabbi's film set to cross Rs 50 crore mark, Varun Dhawan's Baby John beaten
Bhool Chuk Maaf Box Office Collection Day 8: Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi's romantic comedy Bhool Chuk Maaf has completed half of its planned two-week theatrical run. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film's Indian nett collection rose to Rs 47.25 crore, after it earned Rs 3.15 crore on its second Friday. In all probability, the film should be able to cross the Rs 50 crore mark on Saturday, and will then have one week remaining to maximise its earnings. The Akshay Kumar and R Madhavan courtroom drama Kesari 2 had a similar first week run, but it crossed the Rs 50 crore mark on its second Friday. With the current numbers, Bhool Chuk Maaf has already surpassed the India nett collection of Wamiqa's last film, Baby John, which featured Varun Dhawan and debutant Keerthy Suresh. On the other hand, Rajkummar's last film was the Amar Kaushik directorial Stree 2, which had an India nett collection of over Rs 600 crore. The morning and afternoon shows achieved a rate of 5.27% and 11.80%, respectively, while the evening and night shows had a rate of 11.21% and 15.32%. The makers will be hoping that this number will go up the coming two days, as this is the last weekend the film will run in the theatres almost unchallenged. On June 5, Mani Ratnam's Thug Life, featuring Kamal Haasan, will be release in theatres, and on the very next day, the ensemble comedy Housefull 5 will be released. The cast of the latter includes stars like Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Sonam Bajwa, Jacqueline Fernandez, Sanjay Dutt and Jackie Shroff. The limited theatre run was decided after the makers of the film announced that they will be releasing the film straight on Prime Video. This move came during the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor. This did not go well with the multiplex chain PVR INOX, which sued them for damages, and finally, Maddock Films had to release the film in theatres, but just for two weeks. The film will be available to stream on Prime Video from June 6.

Bhool Chuk Maaf box office collection Day 7: Rajkummar Rao, Wamiqa Gabbi-starrer earns three times as much as Kangana Ranaut's Emergency
Bhool Chuk Maaf Box Office Collection Day 7: Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi's family entertainer Bhool Chuk Maaf has completed its first week of release in theatres. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film earned Rs 3.25 crore on Thursday, taking its India nett collection to Rs 44 crore. The film already has a sword hanging over its head due to the promised two-week run at the theatres before it finds its way on to Prime Video. At the halfway point, the film saw an 8% decline in viewership since day 6, which isn't a concerning factor considering it was the middle of the week, but it still hasn't been able to touch double digits since last Sunday. Bhool Chuk Maaf has managed to pass the lifetime earnings of John Abraham's Diplomat, which had a domestic collection of Rs 40.74 crore, and Shahid Kapoor's Deva, which only managed Rs 33.97 crore in India. It has also earned over three times as much as Kangana Ranaut's Emergency, which made just Rs 12 crore at the box office after being delayed by months. ALSO READ: PVR-Inox top boss declares Rajkummar Rao's Bhool Chuk Maaf a 'genuine hit' after theatrical release dispute: 'Has revived theatres' The average occupancy rate for the film was 11% through the day, with the morning and afternoon shows bringing in 5.72% and 13.40%, respectively. The evening and night shows did better by a minuscule margin, posting 11.46% and 14.18% occupancy. As mentioned before, the film is already functioning with an obvious handicap in the form of a limited theatrical run. It was initially supposed to release on May 9, but due to Operation Sindoor, the makers announced that they will be releasing the film directly on Prime Video. Multiplex chain PVR INOX wasted no time in taking legal action against Maddock Films, and the studio ultimately had to agree to the unique two-week theatrical run, which will go on till June 6. This gives the romantic comedy just seven days to rake in the maximum amount of money possible, as the last two days of its run will be affected by two movies. Mani Ratnam's Thug Life, starring Kamal Hassan, is releasing on June 5, and Housefull 5, starring an ensemble of Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Bajwa, Jacqueline Fernandez and Kriti Sanon, will be releasing on June 6.

Mint Primer: Can border fight help settle big vs small screen row?
Last week, India's largest multiplex chain PVR-Inox moved the Bombay High Court against the upcoming Hindi film Bhool Chuk Maaf and producer Maddock Films. What is its complaint and what does it tell us about the troubles of India's cinema owners? Also Read | Mint Primer | This rice is set to make your meal climate-friendly What happened to the film Bhool Chuk Maaf? Maddock Films and Amazon MGM Studios' Hindi comedy Bhool Chuk Maaf was set to hit the theatres on 9 May and advanced bookings were open. But on 8 May, the producers said they will ditch theatres and directly release the film online on Amazon Prime Video. They cited heightened security due to the border tensions between India and Pakistan and solidarity with the 'spirit of the nation'. Several other events were also cancelled last week out of solidarity with the country, including an album launch by actor Kamal Haasan and concerts by singers Arijit Singh and Usha Uthup. Also Read | Mint Primer | Will IT get better or worse? TCS points to cautious growth ahead What is PVR-Inox's complaint? The multiplex chain moved the Bombay High Court on 9 May against Maddock Films, its founder producer Dinesh Vijan, film distributor Pen Marudhar, and Amazon India among others, alleging breach of contract. PVR-Inox argued that its agreement with the makers of Bhool Chuk Maaf included a clause saying the film must run in theatres for at least eight weeks before it was released online on a subscription-based streaming platform. It also said that the makers could not arbitrarily decide not to release the film in theatres due to border tensions because cinemas were open and functioning normally. Also Read | Mint Primer | India's economy looks strong. What could go wrong? What is the status of the case? The court stayed the online release and will hear the case again in June. PVR-Inox has demanded compensation from the film's makers for loss of shows and the money spent on promoting the film. Damages reportedly amount to nearly ₹60 crore. Before moving the court, PVR-Inox had asked Maddock for compensation. But the company refused to do so. Why is this case important? Theatre chains have been faced with low footfall and fewer movie releases as people increasingly switch to OTT platforms. PVR- Inox has been demanding that filmmakers run movies in cinemas for eight weeks before releasing them online. Actor-producer Aamir Khan made a similar plea at the government's WAVES summit in May saying a very narrow theatrical window was killing films. This case may decide the debate on a mandatory minimum eight-week theatrical window for films released on the big screen. So why are filmmakers doing this? Releasing films in theatres is getting expensive as producers are forced to spend more on film promotion. Besides, ticket and food prices for a multiplex outing are much higher than the cost of an annual subscription to an OTT platform. The current consumer slowdown means viewers increasingly find value in watching films at home. Producers, too, say it is easier and more profitable to simply sell their film to an OTT platform without having to worry about marketing budgets and box office collections.
