From pulao to momos, wild veg takes centre stage at fest

Canacona: A unique ran-bhaji or wild vegetable festival was held in Canacona on Saturday, showcasing over 550 dishes made from wild and seasonal vegetables. Scores of people thronged the third successive edition of the ran-bhaji festival in Canacona to sample the dishes, many of which are on their way to extinction. As many as 182 different groups, comprising 139 self-help groups, 20 anganwadis, and 23 high schools, participated in the festival, with each group presenting a minimum of three dishes. The IIHM with its Young Chef Olympiad 2025 team also took part in the festival. Hundreds of visitors followed the chief guests, and such was the demand that within no time most dishes were sold out, with only a few remaining with the participating groups at the end. Some of the interesting preparations included ran-bhaji cake, ran-bhaji pulao, ran-bhaji momos, and ran-bhaji cutlets. Many counters also offered different types of ran-bhaji in raw form for sale at reasonable rates. Gumla: Five prominent personalities from different professional backgrounds have been invited by President Droupadi Murmu for a discussion on issues pertaining to the tribal communities at Rashtrapati Bhavan on July 21. "The insights extracted from the meeting are expected to contribute to the formulation of more effective policies and initiatives for the upliftment of tribal communities across the country," the letter from the tribal affairs ministry, a copy of which is with the TOI, said. Former MLA Shivshankar Oraon, who will lead the Jharkhand delegation, said, "It will be a unique occasion to have a direct dialogue with President on various issues concerning the tribal masses. Nagpur: The Vidarbha Water Summit, organised by Nagpur University's National Service Scheme (NSS) and Janakalyankari Samiti, will be held from June 7 to 9 at Vanamati Auditorium in Dharampeth. The summit will be inaugurated by CM Devendra Fadnavis. Interim Vice Chancellor Dr Madhavi Khode Chavre shared event details at a press conference, noting the summit's focus on regional water issues, solutions, and modern technologies. Dignitaries at the inauguration will include Prashant Bokare, Vice Chancellor of Gondwana University, and Rajesh Sonatakke, Executive Director of Irrigation Development Corporation. The summit's first day will feature a symposium on drinking water challenges in Vidarbha, with S Venkata Mohan, director of National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (Neeri), presiding over. 1 2 Nagpur: Union home minister Amit Shah on Monday laid the foundation of the permanent campus of National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) at Chicholi in Kamptee tehsil and simultaneously inaugurated its transit campus at Subhash Nagar in front of Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology. The Nagpur facility will be the university's 11th campus and its second in Maharashtra after Pune. The event was attended by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, Union minister Nitin Gadkari, revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, MLA Ashish Deshmukh, chief secretary Sujata Saunik, additional chief secretary (home) Iqbal Singh Chahal, divisional commissioner Vijayalakshmi Bidari, and NFSU vice-chancellor JM Vyas, among others. Shah also participated in a tree plantation drive on the new campus site before flying to Nanded. NFSU, a specialised institution under the ministry of home affairs and the only forensic sciences university in the world, is designed to enhance India's internal security apparatus by producing highly trained forensic professionals. It will also expedite the justice delivery system by strengthening forensic capabilities and enhancing forensic capabilities of all stakeholders," said Vyas, a Padmashree awardee and founding vice-chancellor of NFSU. He added that the new campus would open "career doors for students across western India. " Starting from the academic year 2025–26, the Nagpur campus will launch five academic programmes focused on forensic sciences and cyber security. The list includes MSc Forensic Science, BTech and MTech in Cyber Security, as well as BBA and MBA programmes related to management and forensic disciplines. The temporary campus, now operational at Subhash Nagar, is equipped with smart classrooms, a digital forensics laboratory, toxicology and cyber security labs, a library, seminar halls, hostels, dining facilities, and indoor sports areas. Recreational zones include table tennis and volleyball courts. A short film on the occasion highlighted NFSU's national and international footprint, including its campus in Uganda, was shown to the dignitaries. Spread across 50 acres, the permanent Chicholi campus will feature academic blocks, hostels, faculty housing, lecture halls, departmental units, and full-fledged sports infrastructure. The new institution aims to bridge the growing need for forensic professionals in law enforcement, judiciary, and internal security. NFSU was established in 2009 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, when he was Gujarat chief minister, to develop skilled professionals in forensic sciences. The university currently operates in Gujarat, Delhi, Goa, Tripura, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Assam, Manipur, Pune, and internationally in Uganda.

Among these is Archana Mishra, a resident of Chainpur in Saharsa, whose unique paintings have garnered international acclaim. Archana's artwork is not merely a display of vibrant colours but a reflection of deep societal thoughts and feelings, making her pieces sought after worldwide. Archana's journey with art began in childhood, and she has since mastered various techniques, including watercolour, pencil colour, and sketching. For the past decade, she has been a significant contributor to the art world. Her Mithila painting exhibition recently held at Lalit Kala Academy in both Bihar and Delhi, further showcases her talent. With a postgraduate degree in Mathematics and Painting from the Ancient Art Centre in Chandigarh, Archana has also ventured into digital painting, receiving accolades on local, national, and international platforms. Her calendar series of digital paintings of the Ramayana is one notable success. Additionally, her handmade paintings have been sold in countries like the USA and Saudi Arabia, and she has been recognised by the International Art Gallery. One of Archana's most significant achievements came in 2018 when her handmade Mithila painting was selected for the Japan Festival, marking a milestone in her artistic career. Archana's aspiration is for her Saharsa district to gain recognition for Mithila paintings, similar to the fame enjoyed by Madhubani and Darbhanga. She hopes that future artists from her region will receive prestigious honours such as the National Award and Padmashree. Currently residing in Faridabad, Archana credits her father, Manoj Kumar Mishra, her husband, Akash Bhardwaj, and her in-laws, Kiran Chaudhary and Anil Chaudhary, for their unwavering support, which has been crucial to her success.
