Solar streetlights for all Sabah villages

Anwar speaking to Pairin (right) while Hajiji (left) looks on at the Hongkod Koisaan KDCA Hall.-Information Department photo KOTA KINABALU (May 30): Solar-powered streetlights will be installed in nearly all villages and rural areas in Sabah starting this year. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as part of the federal government's immediate efforts to expand basic amenities for rural communities. He stated that this measure was implemented after discovering that previous proposals involved excessively high costs. Now, the government has successfully formulated a more practical and feasible plan to be carried out in phases using solar technology. 'We are starting in Sabah. Almost all villages will have solar-powered streetlights this year. They are affordable yet bright, and I have approved the necessary allocation,' he said during his speech at the official opening of the 2025 Sabah State-Level Kaamatan Festival Celebration at the Hongkod Koisaan Hall (KDCA) on Friday. In his address, Anwar emphasized the importance of close cooperation between the state and federal governments, stating that Sabah's demands are now being heard directly in national development meetings such as the Thirteenth Malaysia Plan. This new approach reflects a major shift in development policy formulation, which is no longer entirely decided at the federal ministry level without direct consideration of state needs. 'That is why, if we want Sabah to progress, there must be a spirit to build Sabah's strength and do this together with a sense of unity within one nation,' he said. He also assured that the Federal Government is ready to discuss revenue-sharing matters with the Sabah State Government, as previously agreed with Sarawak, including oil and gas issues. 'I have no problem prioritizing revenue for Sabah, but let the negotiations be conducted harmoniously, not through shouting and cursing. I suggest working together with the State Government and cooperating with the Federal Government so that the benefits reach the people,' he added. Anwar also praised the spirit of unity among Sabah's diverse ethnic groups and the role of the Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) in preserving the heritage and noble values of the local community. Also present were Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, Deputy Chief Ministers Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Joachim Gunsalam and Datuk Ir. Shahelmey Yahya and KDCA President Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan.

Kaamatan story brings tradition, love to the screen

Published on: Thursday, May 29, 2025 Published on: Thu, May 29, 2025 By: Lorena Binisol Text Size: Crew members and actors in the 'Roti Kahwin' short film, including Pairin (fourth from left). Kota Kinabalu: A new short film celebrating Sabah's rich cultural attribute has made its mark this Kaamatan season. It is expected to be premiered during the finale of Kaamatan (Harvest Festival) on May 31. 'Roti Kahwin', a mockumentary-style romantic comedy displaying the beauty of identity, love and generational connections, all tied together by a comfort food, the Roti Kahwin (sandwich bread). Produced by Genevieve Duis, 41, and directed by Johan John from Kuala Lumpur, the 45-minute film blends humour and cultural sentiment, giving viewers a unique perspective on Kaamatan. This film is truly a labour of love. The main message is that food, especially something very simple as Roti Kahwin, can bring people together across generations and background. It is about celebrating culture in a fun and relatable way. Advertisement 'We wanted to bring the young and old together, uniting respected Kadazandusun figures and passionate youth to create something fresh, yet deeply rooted in tradition. 'Kaamatan isn't just a reflection of the past. Rather, it's a living, evolving expression of who we are,' said Genevieve, from Kg Nosoob, Penampang. The film also boasts two surprise acting debuts, by Huguan Siou (paramount leader) Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, a former Chief Minister, and Unduk Ngadau (Queen of Harvest beauty pageant 1968), Rita Mojilis, both of whom brought cultural pride and generational significance to the project. The story is about a college student (played by Nigel Duis) returning to Sabah for his semester break, working as a food delivery rider during the festival season. Amid deliveries and during the festivity, he finds unexpected romance with a regular customer, played by Queenera Francine. Through the simple yet symbolic presence of Roti Kahwin, the film conveys how food can become a love language, connecting people across different backgrounds. Filmed in Kota Kinabalu, with key scenes shot in Kuala Lumpur, the project captures the duality many young Sabahans experience today - balancing tradition with modern urban life. The production features cameo appearances by world arm-wrestling champion Michael Ford, together with a dynamic team of emerging creatives from East and West Malaysia. With its mix of humour, nostalgia and cultural pride, Roti Kahwin – A Kaamatan Story is set to be a significant contribution to Sabah抯 growing film industry, an artistic tribute to the deep-rooted traditions and evolving modern identity of the Kadazandusun people. In last year's Kaamatan, they produced a film titled 'Tarik Tali.' * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Embrace Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association role with a united spirit: Pairin tells new Central Committee

Published on: Thursday, May 01, 2025 Published on: Thu, May 01, 2025 By: Ricardo Unto Text Size: Pairin and the other central committee members. PENAMPANG: Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA) President Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan called on newly sworn-in Central Committee members to embrace their roles with a united and forward-looking spirit as the organisation embarks on its 59th year of service to the indigenous community. Speaking at the oath-swearing ceremony at Hongkod Koisaan on Tuesday, Pairin extended his heartfelt appreciation to both newly elected and appointed committee members, as well as outgoing office bearers who have served at the central and district levels. He described the occasion as a critical milestone in KDCA's continuing journey to empower the Kadazan Dusun and Murut communities. 'I wish to express my highest appreciation and gratitude to all KDCA members, from the Deputy Presidents, Secretary-General, Treasurer-General, their assistants and those appointed not only to the central committee but also at the district level as coordinators,' he said. 'Congratulations to all who have taken up this responsibility.' Pairin reminded members that with their new mandates, they would soon be engaging in a central planning meeting in Tambunan, scheduled for the end of June, to discuss KDCA's renewed vision and strategic direction. 'This is a responsibility that has been entrusted to each of us, and we must think deeply about our direction, our actions and how we intend to serve our community going forward,' he said. He acknowledged that while the association has made great strides since its inception in 1966, there is still work to be done. Pairin described KDCA's evolution as a journey that has now reached 'station 59,' in reference to the association's 59th anniversary, and urged members to reflect on the progress made as well as the challenges ahead. 'Our journey is one of continuity. 'While we started with many shortcomings, we have seen development. Yet, in this era of modernisation, we need to find new pathways. 'The environment is constantly changing and uncertain,' he said. Pairin reiterated KDCA's vital role in preserving and revitalising the cultural heritage of Sabah's native communities. He stressed that the association's efforts align with the Government's wider aspiration under the Sabah Maju Jaya development plan, particularly in promoting cultural preservation, job creation, economic participation and tourism development. 'Our association is not only important for KDCA members but for the community as a whole. 'We are involved in cultural preservation and heritage, but also in seeking economic opportunities for our people — especially in tourism, where festivals like Kaamatan serve as a catalyst for unity and development,' he said. He called upon the newly installed committee members to treat their appointments as a solemn trust, urging them to focus on KDCA's mission, strengthen collaboration with government agencies and ensure the association remains relevant and effective. 'When we go home, we must reflect and stay focused on KDCA's noble purpose. 'We must think about what else can be done through KDCA, with the cooperation of the Government, to ensure continued success and development,' he said. Pairin also encouraged prayer, unity and collective vision for the future of the community. 'Let us pray for God Almighty's continued guidance in our journey so that it will lead to prosperity for our people. 'Let us move forward together, thinking about the future of our next generation and our community,' he said. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
