US & China's Combined GDP Equals 184 Countries

The U.S. and China are in the midst of their second trade war in seven years. Earlier this year President Trump announced an initial 34% 'reciprocal' tariff rate on China, leading to a swift Chinese retaliation. For a brief period, both crossed into 100% territory (i.e., more than the entire cost of the goods itself). Experts cautioned that the resulting chaos could wipe off hundreds of billions from both economies and financial markets saw a swift downturn in response. Since then, tariff rates have come down: varying between 40โ€“50% on Chinese goods entering the U.S. and 10โ€“30% on U.S. products entering China. In this chart, Visual Capitalist's Pallavi Rao compares the combined GDP of the U.S. and China versus everyone else, using April 2025 data from the International Monetary Fund. The latest estimates for 2025 have America's and China's combined GDP at roughly $50 trillion. Of the two, the U.S. is much larger, at about $31 trillion, with China at $19 trillion. If we skip the next three economiesโ€”Germany, India, and Japanโ€”then the entire rest of the world (184 countries), also has an economic output of around $50 trillion. Which means that despite the rise of regional trade, there is no escaping one of the two economic giants. China's figures do not include Hong Kong or Macao. The U.S. is the world's largest importer of consumer goods, and China is the largest exporter. Most of the world picks one of these two as their largest trading partner. So even when countries might not enjoy the geopolitics of both countries, their economic might effectively makes them the loudest voice in the room. Want more fun comparison maps? Can Money Buy Happiness? Maybe Not, But It Can Buy Longevityโ€”Life Expectancy Rankings Revealed

Visual Capitalist's Pallavi Rao illustrates this phenomenon in the above map, which uses 2025 life expectancy at birth projections from the UN World Population Prospects published last year. Life expectancy at birth measures the average number of years that a newborn could expect to live, if they were subject to the age-specific mortality rates of a given period. This number visualized is an average between men and women. For extra context, women have higher life expectancies than men in nearly every country in the world. The micronation of Monaco has the highest average life expectancy in the world. A baby born in the country in 2025 can expect to live to 87 years old. Most of the top 10 countries are similarly small-sized territories or countries. However, Japan (#4), South Korea (#5), and Australia (#10) are the three top-10 countries with the highest life expectancies (84+) when accounting for a population of more than 20 million people. Regionally, Western European countries have the highest life expectancies at birth. Their counterparts in Eastern Europe are a shade lower. And despite Japan and South Korea's performance, most Asians have life expectancies between 70โ€“80 years. Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Papua New Guinea are below the 70-year threshold. However, several African countries have a below-60 life expectancy, a projected lifespan that is a full 20 years shorter than Western European residents. Nigeria has the lowest average life expectancy at birth, at 55 years. Life expectancies are tricky things to fully comprehend: in that they change throughout a person's lifespan and are measured for entire cohorts born in a year. For example, in countries with lower projected expectancies, it doesn't necessarily mean adults don't live as long. A high infant mortality rate for a particular cohort of babies born in a year could reduce the projected lifespan of the entire cohort. However once a baby from that year survives to adulthood, they may very well reach their 70s. In fact, data shows that the biggest difference between life expectancies of Africa and high-income regions are for those before the age of 5 and after 60. This is because both babies and older adults have a need for specific medical infrastructure which many Africans don't have access to. There is a strong correlation between wealth and longer lifespans. Check out Countries with the Highest GDP per Capita in 2024 to see similarities.

These Are All The Things People Use AI For In 2025

Thought leaders dubbed ChatGPT's emergence โ€“ and subsequent generative AI proliferation โ€“ as the 'fourth industrial age.' Whether it will re-shape the economy entirely still remains to be seen. But there's no denying that most people are familiar with, and are actively using AI. What are they using it for? This ranking tracks the most popular AI use cases as sourced from an analysis done by Marc Zao-Sanders for Harvard Business Review. He examined thousands of forum posts over the last year in a follow-up to his 2024 analysis. The top 30 ranks from this report have been visualized in this graphic via Visual Capitalist's Pallavi Rao. Labels have been edited lightly from the source for readability. People are using AI for support (both professional and personal) in 2025 In fact, the top three use cases (therapy, life organization, and finding purpose) all show that AI can assist humans in managing both emotions and their life. 2024 Use Case Category 2025 Use Case Category 1 Generate Ideas ContentCreation 1 Therapy & Companionship Support 2 Therapy & Companionship Support 2 Organize Life Support 3 Specific Search Research& Analysis 3 Find Purpose Support 4 Edit text ContentCreation 4 Enhance Learning Learning &Education 5 Explore Interests Learning &Education 5 Generate Code TechnicalAssistance 6 Fun & Nonsense Creativity &Recreation 6 Generate Ideas ContentCreation 7 Troubleshoot TechnicalAssistance 7 Fun & Nonsense Creativity &Recreation 8 Enhance Learning Learning &Education 8 Improve Code TechnicalAssistance 9 Personalize Learning Learning &Education 9 Creativity ContentCreation 10 General advice Support 10 Healthy Living Support 11 Draft emails ContentCreation 11 Interview Preparation Learning &Education 12 Explainers Learning &Education 12 Generate Images Creativity &Recreation 13 Write & Edit Rรฉsumรฉ Support 13 Specific Search Research& Analysis 14 Excel Formulas TechnicalAssistance 14 Explainers Learning &Education 15 Email Writing ContentCreation 15 Cooking Guidance Creativity &Recreation 16 Evaluate Copy Research& Analysis 16 Troubleshoot TechnicalAssistance 17 Improve Decisions Research& Analysis 17 Personalize Learning Learning &Education 18 Translation TechnicalAssistance 18 Boost Confidence Support 19 Improve Code TechnicalAssistance 19 Email Writing ContentCreation 20 Draft Document ContentCreation 20 Explain Legalese TechnicalAssistance 21 NavigatePersonal Disputes Support 21 Child Entertainment Creativity &Recreation 22 Summarize Content Learning &Education 22 Corporate LLM Support 23 Make a Complaint Support 23 Student Essays Learning &Education 24 Recommendations Creativity &Recreation 24 Travel Itinerary Support 25 Cooking Guidance Creativity &Recreation 25 Childcare Help Creativity &Recreation 26 Generate Appraisals ContentCreation 26 Medical Advice Support 27 Creativity ContentCreation 27 Navigate Personal Disputes Support 28 Medical Advice Support 28 Generate Legal Document ContentCreation 29 GenerateLegal Document ContentCreation 29 Conversations Support 30 Fix Code TechnicalAssistance 30 Anti-trolling ContentCreation And aside from therapy, these were not the top uses in 2024: which revolved around idea generation and search. Speaking of AI search, its popularity has fallen 10 spots. People are still interested in learning and making AI explain concepts or add context for them. But they're not actively looking up information as much. (This may also be because of Gemini's integration in Google Search). With mental health support severely underfunded and the Loneliness Epidemic only continuing, it's no surprise AI has emerged as a viable outlet for people to get some support in their life. Experts say they can see its usefulness for teaching mindfulness or cognitive behavioral therapy to users. However, the problem occurs when AI is used as a replacement for actual human relationships, preventing deeper human connections, in turn exacerbating loneliness.

How Many Dollars Exist Per American?

In this chart, Visual Capitalist's Pallavi Rao explores a what-if scenario. How much money would each American get if divided equally? First, we had to approximate a figure for all of America's money. This data comes from the Federal Reserve, which tracks M2 money supply in the country. M2 money supply includes cash, savings, time deposits, and money market funds held in the country. It does not include stocks, real estate, or other investments. America's population figures are sourced from the Census Bureau, with the estimate for July, 2025 used for this graphic. Nearly $22 trillion dollars divided amongst 340 million American residents yields around $63,000 for each person. What can be bought with that? Depending on priorities, any one of these things: A new car (like the 2025 Ford F-150 Lariat) Around 10 years worth of groceries A four-year undergraduate degree from a state university (tuition only) A down payment on a $300,000 house Perhaps more interesting is that this same arithmetic for dividing all the world's money yields only $15,000 per person. This is because the U.S. accounts for almost 20% of the global money supply with only 4% of the population. Want to see this same what-if scenario play out with other metrics?
