US & China's Combined GDP Equals 184 Countries
The U.S. and China are in the midst of their second trade war in seven years.
Earlier this year President Trump announced an initial 34% 'reciprocal' tariff rate on China, leading to a swift Chinese retaliation.
For a brief period, both crossed into 100% territory (i.e., more than the entire cost of the goods itself).
Experts cautioned that the resulting chaos could wipe off hundreds of billions from both economies and financial markets saw a swift downturn in response.
Since then, tariff rates have come down: varying between 40โ50% on Chinese goods entering the U.S. and 10โ30% on U.S. products entering China.
In this chart, Visual Capitalist's Pallavi Rao compares the combined GDP of the U.S. and China versus everyone else, using April 2025 data from the International Monetary Fund.
The latest estimates for 2025 have America's and China's combined GDP at roughly $50 trillion.
Of the two, the U.S. is much larger, at about $31 trillion, with China at $19 trillion. If we skip the next three economiesโGermany, India, and Japanโthen the entire rest of the world (184 countries), also has an economic output of around $50 trillion.

The U.S. is the world's largest importer of consumer goods, and China is the largest exporter. Most of the world picks one of these two as their largest trading partner.
So even when countries might not enjoy the geopolitics of both countries, their economic might effectively makes them the loudest voice in the room.

Nigeria ranks among Africa's largest economies, but life expectancy is shortened by widespread diseases, high poverty rates, and lack of adequate infrastructure. In Central Africa, Chad also has one of the world's lowest life expectancies at 55.2 years. Other nations in the region, such as the Central African Republic and South Sudan, continue to be affected by political instability and limited access to basic healthcare services. Meanwhile, Nauru, an island country in Oceania, is the only non-African country on the list and one of the smallest nations in the world. Additionally, women outlive men in almost every country on the list (except Guinea). Mozambique has the largest gender-life expectancy gap, with women living longer by 6.2 years on average. While the figures remain alarmingly low in some African countries, life expectancy on the continent as a whole increased from 53.7 years in 2000 to 63.8 years in 2023. Furthermore, the continent hosts some of the world's fastest-growing economies, including South Sudan and Niger, where life expectancy is currently low. With potential for economic growth and infrastructure development, Africa's life expectancy is projected to improve to 66 years by 2035 and over 68 years by 2050, although it would remain below the global average.

Trade war cuts global economic growth outlook, warns OECD
AFP | Paris The OECD slashed its annual global growth forecast yesterday, warning that US President Donald Trump's tariffs blitz would stifle the world economy -- hitting the United States especially hard. After 3.3% growth last year, the world economy is now expected to expand by a 'modest' 2.9% in 2025 and 2026, the Paris-based Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development said. In its previous report in March, the OECD had forecast growth of 3.1% for 2025 and 3.0% for 2026. Since then, Trump has launched a wave of tariffs that has rattled financial markets. 'The global outlook is becoming increasingly challenging,' said the OECD, an economic policy group of 38 mostly wealthy countries. It said 'substantial increases' in trade barriers, tighter financial conditions, weaker business and consumer confidence, and heightened policy uncertainty will all have 'marked adverse effects on growth' if they persist. The OECD downgraded its 2025 growth forecast for the United States from 2.2% to 1.6%. The world's biggest economy is expected to slow further next year to 1.5%. Trump, who has insisted that the tariffs would spark a manufacturing revival and restore a US economic 'Golden Age', posted on his Truth Social platform before the OECD report's publication: 'Because of Tariffs, our Economy is BOOMING!' The OECD holds a ministerial meeting in Paris on Tuesday and Wednesday. US and EU trade negotiators are expected to hold talks on the sidelines of the gathering after Trump threatened to hit the European Union with 50-percent tariffs. Rising risks The OECD slightly reduced its growth forecast for China -- which was hit with triple-digit US tariffs that have been temporarily lowered -- from 4.8 to 4.7% this year. Another country with a sizeable downgrade is Japan. The OECD cut the country's growth forecast from 1.1% to 0.7%. The outlook for the eurozone economy, however, remains intact at one-percent growth.

Trump 'open' to meeting Putin and Zelensky
US President Donald Trump is "open" to meeting his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts in Turkey, the White House said, after the two sides failed yesterday to make headway towards an elusive ceasefire. Delegations from both sides did, however, agree another large-scale prisoner exchange in their meeting in Istanbul, which in midMay also hosted their first round of face-to-face talks. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan proposed that Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Trump come together for a third round later this month in either Istanbul or Ankara. Putin has thus far refused such a meeting. But Zelensky has said he is willing, underlining that key issues can only be resolved at leaders-level. Trump wants a swift end to the three-year war.
