As families migrate, Erode hamlet without roads or power left with only one student

The absence of motorable roads, electricity, and stable income sources has driven most families from a remote hamlet to migrate to the plains, leaving behind only one boy studying at the Panchayat Union Middle School in Malliamman Durgham. The village, nestled deep inside the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR) in Erode's Kadambur Hills, currently has just one teacher posted at the school. In the 2024-25 academic year, eight students were enrolled in Classes 1 to 8. However, six of them obtained transfer certificates (TCs) after their families relocated to work in sugarcane fields. Of these, two girls were admitted to the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya and are now staying in hostels. In the current academic year, one of the two remaining students also left the school after obtaining a TC. A temporary staff member was posted at the beginning of the academic year, and a permanent teacher was appointed two weeks ago. Poor accessibility The village is accessible only after a two-hour journey by pick-up van along a rugged nine-kilometre path from Kadambur. Of the original 159 families (636 individuals), fewer than 40 now remain in the hamlet. The residents, all belonging to the Malayali Gounder community, rely solely on millet cultivation for subsistence. 'There is no income here, and the solar lighting systems installed in 2018 have long stopped working. Only kerosene lanterns light our homes,' said C. Kaliappan, a resident. M.K. Subramani, the hamlet's first graduate, said most families had migrated to Sathyamangalam in search of jobs and educational opportunities for their children, returning only during festivals. 'To prevent further migration and the complete abandonment of the hamlet, road connectivity and electricity must be provided immediately,' he urged. No power The village has remained largely disconnected since Independence, with only brief access to electricity in 1972 and a short-lived solar lighting initiative in 2018. A hero stone with an inscription found in the area indicates that the hamlet was once part of the Vijayanagar Empire in the 14th century. A senior official at the District Educational Office, Gobichettipalayam, told The Hindu a team would soon visit the hamlet to verify whether any other children are not attending school. 'If so, they will be enrolled,' the official said.

Judge enrols five-year-old daughter in government Tamil medium school

PUDUKKOTTAI: In this competitive world where parents are prioritising private schools over government and government-aided schools, a judge has enrolled his five-year-old daughter in Tamil medium at the Panchayat Union Middle School in Thirukattalai. Judge M Murugesan Principal District Munsiff of Alandur Chengalpattu, on Friday has enrolled his daughter M Bhuvaneshwari in LKG in his native village in Pudukkottai district. "Education in one's mother tongue which lays the strongest foundation for a child," Judge M Murugesan said. The judge said despite having several international and CBSE schools near Chennai, he consciously chose her daughter to enrol in the government school. "I want her to become a voracious reader in Tamil, to learn from people of all backgrounds, and to treat everyone with humility and respect. Most importantly, I want her to think for herself. Government schools not only offer academics, but also the kind of life learning that shapes character," the judge added. A former student of RC Aided School and Alangudi Boys Higher Secondary School, Murugesan said public schools today offer all necessary facilities. "Many judges and civil servants studied in these schools. Private education is not the only path to excellence," he added. The school currently has 130 students from LKG to Class 8, with eight teachers handling the classes. Teachers at the Panchayat Union School in Thirukattalai said that the judge and his wife walked their daughter to the school on Friday morning from their home nearby and completed the admission process. "The admission has sent a quiet message that trust in government schools doesn't need to be spoken, it can be shown," a teacher said. "This year alone, seven of our eligible students cleared the NMMS exam, and one more joined the Kaikuruchi model school. We have also participated and succeeded under the '100 Days, 100% Pass' mission," said M Senthilvadivu, Headmistress of the Panchayat Union Middle School. Chief Education Officer K Shanmugam welcomed the move. "When people in leadership choose public schools, it boosts morale among teachers and builds trust among other parents. The move sends a strong message that government schools are trusted by even the most educated families," Shanmugam said.

Have you heard about a TN govt school where admissions are halted due to overwhelming response?

Panchayat Union Middle School in Chinnaveerampatti COIMBATORE: At a time when many govt schools are witnessing a decline in admissions, the Panchayat Union Middle School (PUMS) in Chinnaveerampatti near Udumalpet in Tirupur district has halted admissions to LKG and UKG classes due to overwhelming demand. The school enrolled 120 students in its kindergarten sections this academic year. Established in 1925, the school is celebrating its centenary in 2025. When Inbakkani took charge as headmaster in 2012, the school had only 160 students. Due to the consistent efforts of Inbakkani, the teaching staff members and the alumni association, enrollment steadily increased over the years, with the student strength now crossing 700. Speaking to TOI, Inbakkani said, "Immediately after I joined, I formed the alumni association in 2013. Through it, we appointed sanitary workers to maintain a clean campus and toilets." LKG and UKG classes were officially introduced in govt schools in Tamil Nadu in 2019 to boost elementary-level enrollment. However, the school introduced these classes in 2015 itself after obtaining special permission. "Parents supported the initiative wholeheartedly," he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Thị trường có dấu hiệu suy thoái không? IC Markets Đăng ký Undo 'With the help of CSR funds, we set up smart classrooms. We conduct annual day celebrations as a two-day grand event involving both students and parents. We also organise educational field trips every year. Extracurricular activities such as karate, bharatanatyam and silambam classes are also held regularly,' Inbakkani said. Based on the growing student strength, the school management committee (SMC) appointed additional teachers, including a dedicated computer science teacher. Under the Namakku Naame scheme, Rs 35 lakh was raised through public contribution. In 2022, the school constructed 12 new classrooms at a total cost of Rs 1.50 crore. 'Despite this, we still need additional classrooms and teachers. We have requested the school education department to provide more teaching staff members and funds for infrastructure expansion,' he said. "Due to these sustained efforts, students from villages located more than 10 km away are now enrolling here. Of the 700 students currently enrolled, only 200 are from Chinnaveerampatti. The remaining students come from nearby villages like Padayachipudur, Myvadi, Ponneri and Udumalpet town," he added.
