Tottenham Ends 17-Year Trophy Drought with Messy, Legendary European Glory

Rabat – Tottenham Hotspur were crowned UEFA Europa League champions for the third time in their history, beating Manchester United 1-0 in an all-English final on Wednesday evening. The first half was messy, with neither team taking control nor creating solid chances. Then, just before halftime, the Spurs managed to break through. In the 42nd minute, Pape Sarr sent a cross into the box, which deflected off Luke Shaw and got a final touch from Brennan Johnson, Tottenham's top scorer in all competitions . 'This is what it's all about. The club hasn't won a trophy for 17 years. Honestly, this is what it means. It means so much. All the fans get battered, we get battered about not winning a trophy, not winning anything. … I'm so happy,' Johnson told the TNT Sports broadcast after the match. The north London club secured qualification for the UEFA Champions League with this chaotically delicious win, despite finishing 17th in the Premier League table, three points above the relegation zone. Tottenham also won their first title since winning the League Cup in 2008 and qualified to compete in the UEFA Super Cup 2025 in Italy, waiting for the winner of the Champions League title between Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan. Ange Postecoglou's win in the Europa League is a huge moment for him, especially given the criticism he's faced for Tottenham's poor Premier League form this season. His bold claim last September, 'I always win things in my second year,' was met with skepticism at the time. But he has now backed it up with silverware and won Tottenham their first continental trophy since the 1983-84 season. As for Manchester United, they ended their season with 'empty hands' and will miss European participation next season, after finishing sixteenth in the English Premier League. This is Manchester United's second loss in the Europa League final, after falling to Villarreal in the 2021 edition. 'We were the better team, but if you don't score goals, you don't win matches,' said Rúben Amorim in the press conference after the game Manchester United pressed hard in the second half, searching for an equalizer. After a free-kick mistake by Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, Rasmus Højlund sent a header toward an open goal. But in an acrobatic move, Micky van de Ven made a quick scissor-kick clearance in the 62nd minute, keeping Spurs ahead and delivering a standout moment in the match. The referee called for seven minutes of stoppage time. Manchester United came close to an equalizer with several attempts, most notably Harry Maguire's header and Lenny Yorke's shot that went above the crossbar. In the final moments, Diogo Dalot played a cross that Luke Shaw met with a header, but Vicario produced a match-winning save. The resulting corner kick fell to Casemiro, who attempted the spectacular with a scissor kick that hit the net from the outside. Moments later, the referee blew the final whistle, confirming Tottenham as the Europa League champions. Tags: Tottenham Footballer Arnaut Danjuma

Spurs beat Man Utd 1-0 in scrappy Europa League final

Son Heung-min lifts the trophy high as Tottenham Hotspur celebrate their Europa League final win at San Mames stadium in Bilbao. (AP pic) BILBAO : Brennan Johnson's bundled first-half goal helped Tottenham Hotspur win a scrappy Europa League final 1-0 against Manchester United on Wednesday as they cast aside their domestic woes to earn a berth in next year's Champions League. It was Spurs' first silverware since the 2008 League Cup and their first European trophy since 1984, but the fourth time they had beaten United this season. Johnson scored in the 42nd minute when United's defence crumbled as Pape Sarr swung in a cross while goalkeeper Andre Onana remained rooted to his line. Johnson and United defender Luke Shaw rushed in and the ball appeared to glance off both of them and in, past Onana's desperate swipe. The goal was as scrappy as the game in a matchup of teams who have had wildly disappointing Premier League seasons, with United languishing in 16th and Spurs 17th. United's Rasmus Hojlund had a terrific chance to equalise with a header midway through the second half, but Spurs' Micky van de Ven leapt for a stunning clearance off the line. United almost equalised at the death but Shaw's header was saved by a diving Guglielmo Vicario. 'This season hasn't been good at all but I swear not one of us players right now care about that. This is what it's all about, this club hasn't won a trophy for 17 years,' goalscorer Johnson told TNT Sports. 'Honestly, this is what it means. It means so much. All the fans get battered, we get battered, for not winning a trophy, for not winning anything. But we had to get the first one in a while today. I'm so happy.' As well as ending a painful 17-year trophy drought, Tottenham's win also offered vindication to embattled manager Ange Postecoglou. In a season defined by Premier League disappointment, their continental conquest represented a stunning reversal of fortunes. The victory also rewards Tottenham with Champions League qualification for next season, a remarkable achievement for a side languishing just above the Premier League relegation zone after an alarming 21 defeats. Their triumph may well serve as the crucial lifeline that their 59-year-old Greek-Australian manager Postecoglou needed to cement his future at the club. For Manchester United, the defeat compounds a season of deep frustration. Mired near the bottom of the Premier League, the Red Devils now face the prospect of a campaign without European competition, leaving Ruben Amorim, United's beleaguered coach, to rebuild at Old Trafford without the draw of European nights. The final presented a fascinating spectacle: two Premier League underachievers transformed into European contenders and it was Tottenham who proved that European football can provide unexpected redemption. Amorim's side will be thoroughly sick of the sight of Tottenham, who extended their unbeaten run against United to seven matches, completing an unprecedented seasonal sweep with four wins in four encounters, a first in their history against the Manchester club. As jubilant Spurs players and fans celebrated in the balmy evening air of Bilbao, Tottenham's long-suffering faithful rejoiced as after 41 years without European silverware and countless near-misses, a weight was lifted from their shoulders.
