DBS breakthroughs highlighted at International Conference
MUSCAT: An International Medical Conference on Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) was held in Muscat on July 26, bringing together leading experts and practitioners in the field of neurology and neurosurgery.
The event was jointly organised by the Muscat Family Physicians Group, in association with the Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Research Centre, Yashoda Hospital, Hitech City, Hyderabad, India, and Global Treatment Services and held at the Intercity Hotel, Al Khuwair.
The conference focused on the theme: 'The Role of Deep Brain Stimulation in Alleviating Symptoms of Movement Disorders, Especially Parkinson's Disease and Dystonia'. These conditions continue to place a heavy burden on patients and their families, and the conference aimed to shed light on cutting-edge therapeutic approaches.
Dr Rukmini, Senior Consultant – Neurology, provided an overview of DBS and discussed its various indications.
Prof Dr Rupam, Senior Consultant – Neurology, shared valuable insights into the long-term benefits of DBS in improving the quality of life for Parkinson's patients and their caregivers. Dr Rajesh, Senior Consultant – Neurosurgery, emphasised the remarkable improvement in symptoms of dystonia through DBS.
The distinguished team from Yashoda Hospital, with over 25 years of experience and more than 1,000 DBS procedures performed, also highlighted their contribution to international training and fellowships.
The scientific presentations were followed by an engaging and interactive session involving leading neurologists, neurosurgeons, internists, family physicians, ER specialists, physiotherapists, and practitioners of alternative medicine such as homeopathy and Ayurveda.
Recent advances in treatment, emerging therapeutic modalities, and future prospects were thoroughly discussed.
More than 50 prominent medical professionals attended the conference, reflecting the growing interest in advanced neuromodulation therapies within Oman.
Dr Sanjay Dalal, the event organiser, extended his heartfelt thanks to the visiting team from Yashoda Hospital for sharing their vast clinical experience.
