News of Tyrann Mathieu's sudden retirement led to a flood of congratulatory messages on social media. Not just from his former teammates and fans with the New Orleans Saints, Kansas City Chiefs, Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals, but from those in the media who have covered him. The 12-year pro went out on his own terms, and that's always great to see. Not many players get that opportunity. Mathieu accomplished a lot in the NFL. One of the most memorable in recent years, though, was defensive back Patrick Peterson, who spent three seasons from 2008 to 2010 with LSU. Advertisement However, at 34 years old and after an 11-year career in the NFL — playing for the Arizona Cardinals, Minnesota Vikings, and Pittsburgh Steelers — Peterson decided to hang it up and retire. LSU honored him with his own social media post, saying, "A Consensus All-American, Thorpe AND Bednarik Award winner, 1st round NFL pick, eight-time Pro Bowl selection. A legendary football career. Congratulations on retirement, Patrick Peterson!" During his time in the NFL, Peterson racked up some impressive numbers, including 652 tackles, four sacks, 12 fumble recoveries, 122 pass deflections, 36 interceptions and two pick-6s. Advertisement During his rookie season, he also fielded 44 punt returns where he had 699 yards (led the NFL) and four touchdowns (led the NFL). Along with his Pro Bowls, Peterson would be awarded First-Team All-Pro honors three times and was also named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame's All-Decade team for the 2010s. 2 former Arizona Cardinals players to announce Day 2 draft picks for other teams Patrick Peterson will announce the Cardinals' Day 2 picks in the draft and two other former Cardinals will also do it for other teams. Day 2 of the 2025 NFL draft will be next Friday and the tradition of having current or former players announcing Day 2 picks for teams continues. Two other former Cardinals will make pick announcements for other teams. For the New York Jets, pass rusher John Abraham will announce the pick. The other former Cardinals player is Simeon Rice, who was drafted third overall by the Cardinals in 1996.
