Create Account Robert Prevost became the first pope from the U.S. in the history of the Catholic Church when he was elected on May 8. The Chicago-born missionary, who took the name Leo XIV, is a White Sox fan, according to his brother, John. The graphic installation at Rate Field marks the location where the future pope cheered for Chicago in Game 1 of the 2005 World Series. The White Sox beat the Astros 5-3 on their way to a four-game sweep for the title. The team said the pillar artwork commemorates the pope's Chicago roots 'and the unifying power of baseball on the world stage.' According to the White Sox, the pope attended the game with the late Ed Schmit, a family friend and season ticket holder. They knew each other through their work at a Catholic high school on Chicago's South Side, and Schmit's son, Nick, remains the account holder for the pope's World Series seat. The White Sox, who have struggled on the field in recent years, and their fans have embraced their connection to the new pope since he was elected. The team said it sent a jersey and a hat to the Vatican after the announcement. Miguel Amaya went 3 for 3 for Chicago, and Kyle Tucker hit an RBI triple. The NL Central leaders had dropped four of five. Advertisement Cubs right-hander Colin Rea (3-0) allowed two runs and six hits in a season-high 6 2/3 innings. Rea was replaced by Daniel Palencia after Derek Hill hit a two-run homer for Miami. Palencia got four outs before Drew Pomeranz handled the ninth for his first save since 2020. Last-place Miami lost for the 12th time in 15 games. Marlins right-hander Cal Quantrill (2-4) was charged with three runs and four hits in 4 1/3 innings. The Cubs grabbed control in the fifth. Nico Hoerner singled and scored on Swanson's ninth homer, a drive to left-center. Tucker tripled home Amaya and Suzuki followed with his 10th homer against Anthony Veneziano. Advertisement Hill returned on Monday after missing 22 games with a left wrist sprain. Key moment Miami put a runner on with two out in the ninth when Connor Norby reached on a pinch-hit single. Naylor grounded a single to right for his second RBI. The top of 11th ended when Naylor tried to steal home and was thrown out by reliever Jordan Wicks (0-1). Advertisement Shelby Miller (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings and for Drey Jameson tossed a 1-2-3 11th for his first save. In a game twice delayed by rain for a total of 98 minutes, the teams exchanged runs in the 10th. Chicago automatic runner Dansby Swanson scored from second on Nico Hoerner's single to tie it at 2. Tim Tawa came home from second in the top half when Hoerner couldn't handle reliever Wick's throw on a sacrifice bunt. Michael Busch had an RBI. The Diamondbacks limited the Cubs, who lead the majors with 145 runs, to four hits. Diamondbacks starter Merrill Kelly allowed one run and two over 5 2/3 innings. Dallas moved 1 1/2 games ahead of idle Phoenix for the final spot in the Western Conference play-in tournament. Advertisement Anthony Davis added 18 points and Spencer Dinwiddie had 14 points and 11 assists to help the Mavericks win for the second straight game and fourth time in the last five. Dallas led by 11 points late in the fourth quarter but Chicago cut it to 118-116 with 8.6 seconds left. Thompson made two throws two seconds later and the Mavericks were careful not to foul Chicago's Nikola Vucevic, who made a 3-pointer with 0.9 seconds left. Rookie Matas Buzelis scored 28 points for Chicago. Vucevic and Coby White each added 25. The Bull had won four straight and nine of 11. Takeaways Mavericks: Dallas, Sacramento and Phoenix are fighting for the final two play-in spots in the West. Advertisement Bulls: The Bulls, seeking a season-best fifth straight victory, missed a chance to move closer to the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference. Key moment The Mavericks gave Vucevic plenty of room on his final 3-pointer, ensuring the Bulls, who beat the Lakers a few nights earlier, wouldn't have another flurry of late dramatics.
