Naylor's third hit lifts Diamondbacks over Cubs 3-2 in 11 innings

CHICAGO (AP) — Josh Naylor's third hit of the game drove in automatic runner Geraldo Perdomo in the 11th inning with the go-ahead run and the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Chicago Cubs 3-2 on Sunday to avoid a series sweep.
Naylor grounded a single to right for his second RBI. The top of 11th ended when Naylor tried to steal home and was thrown out by reliever Jordan Wicks (0-1).

Shelby Miller (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings and for Drey Jameson tossed a 1-2-3 11th for his first save.
In a game twice delayed by rain for a total of 98 minutes, the teams exchanged runs in the 10th.
Chicago automatic runner Dansby Swanson scored from second on Nico Hoerner's single to tie it at 2. Tim Tawa came home from second in the top half when Hoerner couldn't handle reliever Wick's throw on a sacrifice bunt.
Michael Busch had an RBI. The Diamondbacks limited the Cubs, who lead the majors with 145 runs, to four hits.
Diamondbacks starter Merrill Kelly allowed one run and two over 5 2/3 innings. He left with right leg cramping after retiring 16 hitters in a row.

Corbin Carroll went 0 for 5, ending a streak of reaching base in 27 games dating to Sept. 23.
Cubs starter Jameson Taillon allowed one run and three hits in five innings.

Chicago third baseman Jon Berti limited Lourdes Gurriel Jr. to infield single with a diving stop in the sixth, then grabbed Tawa's liner to end the inning, preserving a 1-all tie.

Kelly has been solid in four of five starts this season, but yielded nine runs in 3 2/3 innings to the Yankees on April 3 to account for a 4.73 ERA

Japan's Ritsu Dōan shines on Eintracht Frankfurt debut in German Cup
BERLIN (AP) — Japan forward Ritsu Dōan scored twice on his Eintracht Frankfurt debut in a 5-0 win at fifth-tier FV Engers in the first round of the German Cup on Sunday. The underdogs managed to hold Dino Toppmöller's team for most of the first half until Jean-Matteo Bahoya and Dōan scored in quick succession before the break. Dōan scored again after it, and Elye Wahi and Paxten Aaronson both scored late to complete the rout. Dōan joined Frankfurt 10 days ago from Bundesliga rival Freiburg, his arrival compensating for Hugo Ekitiké's sale to Liverpool. Frankfurt was without Mario Götze, who is still working his way back from injury, and goalkeeper Kevin Trapp, who is expected to join Paris FC following its promotion to the top division in France. Frankfurt is expected to sign Michael Zetterer from Werder Bremen as Trapp's replacement. Zetterer cried as he appeared to bid Bremen fans farewell following the team's loss at Arminia Bielefeld on Friday. Frankfurt starts its Bundesliga campaign against Bremen on Aug. 23. ___

Newly promoted Ligue 1 side Paris FC signs striker Geubbels from St. Gallen
PARIS (AP) — Newly promoted Ligue 1 side Paris FC signed striker Willem Geubbels from Swiss team St. Gallen on a five-year contract on Sunday. Paris FC announced the signing with a video posted on X. No transfer fee was given but French sports daily L'Équipe said Geubbels cost 9 million euros ($10.5 million) with a further 2.5 million euros in eventual bonuses. The 24-year-old Geubbels came through Lyon's famed youth academy but hardly played for the club before joining Monaco. He scored one league goal there and two for Nantes before joining St. Gallen in 2023, where he scored 14 league goals last season. Paris FC has large funds at its disposal since its takeover by France's richest family, the Arnaults of luxury empire LVMH. The energy drink giant Red Bull acquired a minority stake. For the first time in 35 years two Paris-based soccer clubs are in Ligue 1. Furthermore, Paris FC has changed its home stadium since being promoted and will play at Stade Jean-Bouin, which is literally across the street from defending champion Paris Saint-Germain's Parc des Princes stadium. ___
