Rock's Biggest Drum Swap Just Shook Two Iconic Bands
The Foo Fighters just made big moves behind the drum kit. The Hollywood Reporter confirms Ilan Rubin, 37, best known for his long-standing role with Nine Inch Nails, is joining the Foos. He replaces Josh Freese, 52, who exited the band in May after just a year of playing with joined Nine Inch Nails in 2009 and became the youngest-ever Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee in 2020. But his rock cred doesn't stop there. He's also known for his work with Angels & Airwaves and film composer Danny Elfman. It's not surprising the Foo Fighters brought Rubin on. What is surprising is Freese is returning to Nine Inch Nails in his was Nine Inch Nails' drummer from 2005 to 2008. Freese confirmed his Foo Fighters departure back in May, saying the band chose "to go in a different direction," but added that he held no hard feelings. He stepped away to focus on family life. Now, he's back just in time for the band's massive "Peel It Back" North American tour starting August 6. As for Rubin, it's unclear if his role in the Foo Fighters is permanent or strictly for touring. The timing is tight, as he had reportedly committed to Nine Inch Nails through 2024 but recently informed Trent Reznor that he'd accepted "a job with another band."The Foo Fighters are gearing up for their own tour, beginning October 2 in Jakarta. They'll hit major cities including Singapore, Tokyo, and Mexico City. The Foos latest song, "Today's Song," marks their 30th anniversary. In a letter to fans, lead singer Dave Grohl, 56, reflected on the band's highs, lows, and the legacy of the late Taylor Hawkins, who died in 2022 at the age of 50. Foo Fighters' new drummer revealed after band member's firing
Foo Fighters have found their new drummer after the shock firing of Josh Freese. The switch up marks a new chapter in the Foo Fighters' ongoing evolution. He succeeds Freese, 52, who joined the iconic group in 2023, following the death of longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins in 2022. Freese's departure, quietly announced in May, left fans wondering who could possibly carry the torch and join the band comprised of Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett, and Rami Jaffee. Ilan Rubin, best known for his tenure with Nine Inch Nails and Angels & Airwaves, is stepping behind the kit for the legendary rock band, sources confirm to The Hollywood Reporter. Having joined Nine Inch Nails as their touring drummer in 2009 at just 21, Rubin became the youngest-ever inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame when the band was honored in 2020. In addition to his longstanding work with Trent Reznor and co., Rubin also performs with Angels & Airwaves and has collaborated with film composer Danny Elfman. He is currently expecting his second child. It's not yet clear whether Rubin is joining the Foo Fighters as a permanent member or in a touring capacity. A source close to the matter says Rubin had committed to Nine Inch Nails through the end of 2025, but informed Reznor last week that he had 'accepted a job with another band.' Meanwhile, Freese is headed back to familiar territory as Nine Inch Nails confirmed his return as their live drummer — a role he held from 2005 to 2008 before stepping away. The band teased the news with a celebratory Instagram story featuring Freese and the caption: 'let's f***** go.' Nine Inch Nails is set to begin the North American leg of its Peel It Back arena tour on August 6 in Oakland, California. The group, which wrapped a sold-out European run earlier this summer, has also been tapped to compose the score for Tron: Ares – the first time Nine Inch Nails, rather than just Reznor and longtime collaborator Atticus Ross, will be credited on a film soundtrack. For Freese, the departure from Foo Fighters came as a surprise. In a May Instagram post, he said the band 'decided to go in a different direction with their drummer,' adding, 'I'm not angry — just a bit shocked and disappointed.' Later, Freese addressed the possible reasons for his firing on Instagram, listing ten hilarious causes. Among the imagined offenses? 'Once whistled 'My Hero' for a week solid on tour,' 'Never even once tried growing a beard,' and the confession that he could only name 'one Fugazi song.' (A cardinal sin, apparently, given Dave Grohl's well-documented reverence for the iconic D.C. punk band.) More Trending Frontman Dave Grohl publicly thanked Freese for his contributions in a fan letter earlier this month, writing that without 'the thunderous wizardry of Josh Freese, this story would be incomplete.' Rubin will make his debut with the Foo Fighters when the band kicks off their long-awaited international tour this fall, starting October 2 in Jakarta, Indonesia. Additional dates include Singapore, Tokyo, Osaka, and a stop in Mexico City on November 14. Got a story? Foo Fighters bring in Ilan Rubin as drummer
The Foo Fighters have officially enlisted Ilan Rubin as their new drummer, announcing the change this week after Josh Freese exited earlier in May with little explanation. The band confirmed the swap, which saw Freese return to Nine Inch Nails to join their upcoming Peel It Back tour. The post from NIN featured a celebratory image captioned: 'Let's fucking go.' Ilan Rubin, 37, has performed with NIN as their touring drummer since 2009 and became the youngest member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2020 with the band. He's also collaborated with Paramore, Angels & Airwaves, and Danny Elfman. Freese's departure followed a two‑year tenure with Foo Fighters, as the drummer who replaced the late Taylor Hawkins in 2023, and was described by the band as a shift in musical direction. Freese later expressed that he was surprised by the decision but held no ill will. It remains unclear whether Rubin's role is permanent or exclusively for the upcoming Asia 2025 tour, which starts in Jakarta on October 2, with appearances in Singapore, Tokyo, Osaka, and Mexico City. With the swap finalized, the Foo Fighters continue to mark their 30th anniversary, having recently released a new track, Today's Song. The song included a note of gratitude to Freese and previous drummers, highlighting the band's evolving legacy.
