Nine Inch Nails has given fans something to believe in. The industrial rock juggernaut surprise dropped new song 'As Alive As You Need Me to Be' on Thursday (July 17), and also announced that the Tron: Ares soundtrack will be arriving on Sept. 19 via Interscope Records.
The dance-floor ready song — the band's first new music in five years — invokes electronic duo Justice. The track is co-produced by Boys Noize, who is currently the opening act on NIN's Peel It Back world tour and also worked with the band to remix the Challengers score.

The band itself also shared a shot of the T-shirt on its Instagram Stories on July 8 with no further information.

Nine Inch Nails Launches A Comeback With A New Top 10 Hit

Nine Inch Nails scores a top 10 debut on Billboard's Dance Digital Song Sales chart with 'As Alive ... More As You Need Me to Be' from the Tron: Ares soundtrack. ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA - AUGUST 09: Music group Nine Inch Nails members Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross appear at the Disney Entertainment Showcase at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim, California on August 09, 2024. (Photo byfor Disney) Nine Inch Nails has become something of a side project for Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, the only two current official members of the industrial rock group. Reznor rose to stardom with the outfit in the '90s, pioneering new sounds and showing millions how to express their angst through music, but lately, Ross and Reznor have been more focused on scoring TV and film, where they've been hugely successful, winning major honors such as Emmys, Grammys, and Academy Awards. The two reformed Nine Inch Nails to tour and compose the score for Tron: Ares, the upcoming new film in the Tron universe. The first single from that project, which was released only a few weeks before the movie itself hits theaters, brings the band back to the top 10 on a Billboard chart. "As Alive As You Need Me to Be" Arrives On July 17, Nine Inch Nails released "As Alive As You Need Me to Be," the first single from the Tron: Ares soundtrack. Anticipation for new music from the now-duo was extremely high, as it had been announced some time ago that the group was going to release music for the film under that moniker. Fans of Nine Inch Nails — as well as both Reznor and Ross — didn't disappoint. The single opens at No. 10 on the Dance Digital Song Sales chart. Nine Inch Nails Earns a New Top 10 Hit Nine Inch Nails has only ever reached Billboard's list of the bestselling dance tracks in the United States twice, and both cuts have spent time inside the top 10. In December 2010, "Closer" debuted, but it wasn't until June 2021 — 11 years later — that it reached its all-time peak of No. 5. That cut has spent just over a year on the list. This week, "As Alive As You Need Me to Be" joins it inside the top 10, but just barely. Nine Inch Nails Joins Blackpink and Madonna Three tracks debut on the Dance Digital Song Sales chart this week, and Nine Inch Nails earns the lowest launch of the bunch. Blackpink's "Jump" starts at No. 1, while Madonna's "Gone Gone Gone (Original Demo Version)" opens at No. 8. A Single Years in the Making "As Alive As You Need Me to Be" is Nine Inch Nails' first single of its own since 2018, when "God Break Down the Door" was pushed from the album Bad Witch. The group has released music since then, including a pair of albums and a collaboration with the American industrial outfit Health, but this Tron: Ares single is easily the most exciting bit of news in the Nine Inch Nails world in some time.

‘Tron: Ares' Just Brought the Grid Back to San Diego Comic-Con

In the pantheon of cool Hall H moments at San Diego Comic-Con, the reveal that Disney was returning to the world of Tron is right near the top. Sneaking into a 2008 panel about Race to Witch Mountain, Disney randomly showed proof-of-concept footage announcing that Tron 2, later called Tron Legacy, would be coming in a few years, and the place went mad. Since that moment, Tron and Comic-Con have shared a fun history, with Legacy's team even recording audio for the film in Hall H a few years later. All of which is to say, when the third Tron film, Tron: Ares, was announced for Comic-Con, it had a lot to live up to. That's especially the case considering the studio dropped a brand-new trailer days before the convention. So what was in store for the biggest room in pop culture? Well, lots of cast to start. That included stars Jared Leto, Jeff Bridges, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Gillian Anderson. Lots of lights, as red lasers crisscrossed the entirety of Hall H for long sections of the. And lots of loud Nine Inch Nails music, as they are scoring the film. The panel was a visual delight, centered on two action-packed clips from the film itself. The first was a lightcycle chase in the real world. Dillinger (Peters) summons Ares (Leto) and Athena (Turner-Smith) from the Grid to capture Eve (Greta Lee). They can only exist in our world for 30 minutes before dying (or de-ressing, in Tron speak), so they have to be quick. Which they are. Eve is just minding her business driving around when Ares and Athena bolt through some vast mountain roads toward the city. Somehow, tapping into the city's cameras and stuff, they are able to locate Eve without even seeing her. Eventually, they catch up, and she has to do what she can to escape. Eve is a human, though, so she can be a little more cunning than the programs. She drives into a circular parking garage, hides, and when Athena slowly drives by, she sends her motorcycle at her, smashing her over a ledge. However, when she looks down, Athena is gone. She's already up and running back around the garage. Without a bike or car, Eve looks around and sees… the lightcycle. She somehow starts it up, sits down, and it engulfs her just in time to escape before Athena reaches her. The clip ended with her speeding off. The second clip saw Eve go onto the Grid itself. She's floating in some kind of water until Ares grabs her out. He unveils a lightcycle jetski and takes off on a digital river. Eve puts her hand in it and realizes it's all just bytes, not real water, even though it acts like it. Athena sends drones after the pair as we realize Ares has gone against his programming and against Dillinger, and is now helping Eve. It's an epic chase both below the digital water and above it, against the drones, until Eve finally agrees to help Ares. The two make it to the transport portal, which should send them to the real world, and the scene cuts out. I have to say, while both of these scenes looked amazing and each was set to absolutely incredible new music by Nine Inch Nails, something was just… off about them. There was just a certain energy that was missing even though it looked and sounded incredible. Maybe it was because we didn't have any context? Because as happy as everyone on the panels seemed to be about being at Comic-Con, none of them said anything about the movie itself. There was some chatter in the clips about some code everyone is fighting over? What is that about? What role does Jeff Bridges play? Where's Sam Flynn and Quorra? Who even is Eve, and what is Dillinger up to? Nothing. Even so, with only a few months left until the October 10 release of Tron: Ares, we are still ready to get back to the Grid. What about you? 'Tron: Ares' brings the Grid, light cycles and Nine Inch Nails soundtrack, to Comic-Con

SAN DIEGO -- The Grid took over Comic-Con on Friday, bringing the stars of the new 'Tron: Ares' films to unveil footage and reveal the story behind the franchise's third movie. The film stars Jared Leto, Jeff Bridges, Greta Lee and Jodie Turner-Smith as the story brings the virtual environment of the Grid, complete with light cylces, into the real world. Disney showed off several minutes of footage, including a light cycle chase scene in the real world and another in the red-hued Grid. Propelling the onscreen action is a propulsive Nine Inch Nails soundtrack. 'It's fun to see it on the big screen for the first time,' said director Joachim Rønning. Disney turned the Hall H panel into a spectacle, with red lasers filling the room and characters in suits with red lights entering the massive hall. Asked what excited her about joining the 'Tron' franchise, Lee responded: 'I just wanted to ride a light cycle.' Leto spoke affectionately about the original saying: 'This movie just grabbed a hold of me and took me to a place that I'd never been before. It kind of rattled my imagination and it kind of showed me what was possible in the world.' He praised Bridges and Steven Lisberger, who created 'Tron' and directed the 1982 original. Lisberger attended Friday's panel and laid out his case for why the franchise remains relevant. 'My feeling about 'Tron' is that the most important thing is we kick this technology around artistically before it kicks us around,' Lisberger said. 'I am weary about hearing all the grim news about the future,' he said, and the way he thinks it can be avoided is to 'inspire young people what can be done with this technology.' Friday's panel ended with the premiere of the music video for "As Alive as You Need Me to Be," the first Nine Inch Nails song from the soundtrack. 'Tron' has never been in the top tier of sci-fi franchises. The original 1982 film starring Bridges as Kevin Flynn, a man sucked into a computer vortex known as the Grid, was admired for its ground-breaking concept and effects, and was a modest hit with moderately good reviews. Perhaps more importantly, it won a cult following and has been maintained enough in cultural memory to remain a valuable property for Disney. The 2010 film 'Tron: Legacy,' starring Bridges and Garrett Hedlund, made more than $400 million globally. A TV show that followed, 'Tron: Uprising,' lasted just one season. Rønning has helmed other Disney franchise films: 2017's 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales' and 2019's 'Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.' The Norweigan director said he was interested because he dreamed about making a sci-fi film and enjoyed the twist of 'Ares' bringing the Grid into the real world.
