Paramedics save baby at Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Pennsylvania weeks after closure
A dramatic moment unfolded outside Crozer-Chester Medical Center on Thursday after Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro held a press conference calling for stricter regulations of for-profit hospital systems. A car pulled up outside with a mother saying her baby was not breathing. Paramedics, who were outside the Delaware County hospital for the news conference, cradled the baby in their arms. But the baby could not be admitted to Crozer because the hospital had been shut down for weeks. Peggy Malone, the Crozer nurses' union president, became emotional as the mother tried to get her baby help. "Not one child should ever die because those bastards closed our hospital, because they never cared about the people in this community, and we do, and this is why we've been fighting so hard, and somebody has to open our ER now," Malone said. "This can never happen again." Medics were able to save the baby, who was reportedly taken to Nemours Children's Hospital in Wilmington. Malone said the outcome could have been worse. "If that child had died today, the devastation that would have caused that entire family, it's unbearable," Malone said. "And this can't happen. It has to stop now. Get our ER open now. There's no reason that the ER is closed. Get Prospect out of here, hold them accountable and open our eyes now!" CBS News Philadelphia reached out to Prospect Medical Holdings to comment on this story, but we haven't heard back.

Taylor Hospital to close Saturday days after Crozer Health shutdown announcement
Taylor Hospital in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, will close Saturday morning, days after a federal bankruptcy judge approved Prospect Medical Holdings' plan to close Crozer Health. Friday was the last full day the hospital stayed open. Employees were told that Taylor Hospital will officially close at 8 a.m. Saturday. Hospital staff said the mood inside on Friday was somber, with some describing it as a funeral. Only 10 patients remain at Taylor Hospital, according to an employee. The employee said the patients were being discharged or transferred to other hospitals on Friday. Employees spent Friday cleaning out offices, emptying refrigerators and taking other steps to wind down. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Stacey Jernigan authorized California-based Prospect's plan to close Crozer Health, Delaware County's largest hospital system, which includes Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland and Taylor Hospital. Crozer Health closure comes after monthslong effort to save it fails The decision to close Crozer Health comes after a monthslong effort to save the health system failed. Nearly $50 million was invested in Crozer to maintain its payroll. A $5 million deal between Prospect and Penn Medicine to keep it operating collapsed. Layoffs of more than 2,600 Crozer Health employees began Friday. Crozer-Chester is expected to close on May 2 — its ER will close on Wednesday, April 30. A Prospect spokesperson claimed earlier this week that the ambulatory surgery and imaging centers at Brinton Lake, Broomall, Haverford and Media will stay open. Peggy Malone, a longtime Crozer Behavioral Health nurse and president of the Crozer-Chester Nurses Association, said Tuesday that Prospect is moving to close the system "so rapidly." "We have tried everything we could. We've had so many of our legislators out here to help us save this health system and save these patients. I still, in my heart, don't believe it's over," Malone said. "I still, in my heart, believe somebody is going to help us." With Taylor Hospital closed and Crozer-Chester next, Delaware County will have only two hospitals remaining: Riddle in Middletown Township and Mercy Fitzgerald in Darby. EMTs told CBS News Philadelphia the Crozer closure will lead to longer wait times and potentially deadly consequences in Delco. Delaware County officials declared a disaster emergency to help safeguard public health, continuity of care and mobilize resources to support residents and health care workers. Prospect plans to put its assets up for auction next week. Township partners with Narberth Ambulance amid Crozer closure On Wednesday, when Crozer Health hospitals began diverting patients, Ridley Township partnered with Narberth Ambulance as part of the township's disaster emergency declaration. The Ridley Township Board of Commissioners announced that Narberth Ambulance will serve as the township's 911 EMS provider, delivering advanced life support services to the township. According to the board of commissioners, the partnership will provide 24/7 ALS coverage and rapid response times. The Woodlyn and Holmes fire companies will continue to provide basic life support services, according to township officials. Main Line Health to hold résumé dropoff at Riddle Hospital Thousands of workers will be seeking new jobs now that Crozer Health is closing. Main Line Health will be holding a résumé dropoff on Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Riddle Hospital. People looking for jobs in the health care system can also have the opportunity to speak with someone from its recruitment team.

Crozer Health closure leaves major health care gap in Philly suburbs
The largest health system in Delaware County began closing two hospitals Wednesday after failing to find a buyer amid bankruptcy proceedings. Why it matters: Crozer Health's shutdown will lead to thousands of layoffs and a major shakeup for health care across the region. State of play: Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park and Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland are slated to shutter in May, per a bankruptcy plan approved by a federal judge in Texas on Tuesday. Prospect Medical Holdings, the California-based private company that owns Crozer Health, is winding down services and transferring patients. Crozer will lay off 2,651 employees. By the numbers: Taylor Hospital and Crozer-Chester took in more than 78,000 emergency room visits combined annually, per the company's website. They also treated a combined 54,000 inpatients and outpatients a year. What they're saying: The decision is "going to devastate our entire community," Peggy Malone, union president for Crozer-Chester Nurses Association, told WHYY. The other side: Prospect Medical's chief restructuring officer Paul Rundell said in a statement the company "recognizes the impact this action will have on patients as well as team members" but it was "unable to reach a viable alternative." The big picture: The closures will force patients to seek care at nearby hospitals, including Riddle Hospital in Media, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philly, and Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby. That will tack on 30-40 minutes of extra travel time to get care for some patients, per FOX29. Many of these providers say they're already seeing a surge of new patients. Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic's Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital and St. Francis Hospital in Delaware have seen patient volume tick up over the past two months, the hospitals' president, Marlow Levy, told the Philadelphia Business Journal. Riddle Memorial Hospital is expecting an influx of patients in its emergency department, the center's president, Shelly Buck, told Chief Healthcare Executive. Catch up quick: Prospect Medical Holdings filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January. Earlier this week, the company said it would close the hospitals after failing to find a buyer for the facilities. That came after state and local officials funneled $40 million to Prospect while the company in an effort to keep the hospitals open. Flashback: The company also closed two other hospitals in Delaware County in 2022. Penn Medicine tells Axios it has worked for two years on "creative efforts" to help sustain Crozer Health, including offering $5 million to acquire and absorb leases for some of Crozer's Broomall and Brinton Lake outpatient facilities. Prospect Medical rejected the deal last week, a Penn spokesperson said, adding the decision has "negative impacts for patients and displace many talented healthcare professionals." Zoom in: Ambulances began diverting patients to other hospitals on Wednesday, per court documents. The hospitals' emergency rooms are expected to close on Friday, while emergency medical services end on May 2. Meanwhile, all patient services are expected to end at Crozer-Chester Medical Center on May 2, per court documents. Patient services at Taylor Hospital will cease on Monday, except home health services will fully close on May 11. The end of services is subject to change due to the transfer of patients and other issues.

Crozer Health closure: Nurses, doctors, workers rally to keep their jobs after closure announcement
The Brief Prospect Medical Holdings, the Texas-based healthcare company behind Crozer Health, announced it will start to wind down operations at the Delaware County medical center. Doctors, nurses and faculty members rallied Tuesday to fight for their jobs one last time. MEDIA, Pa. - Supporters of the troubled Crozer Healthcare System of Delaware County rallied in support of the hospitals Tuesday. Meanwhile, a lawyer told a Texas bankruptcy judge it is time to close them. What we know Motorists blew their horns as they passed a sprawling rally on a hill outside Crozer Hospital, drawing cheers Tuesday. About 100 nurses, doctors and workers of the troubled healthcare system gathered to protest its pending closure even begging for a last-minute savior. Prospect Medical Holdings of California, the owner of the Crozer-Chester Medical Center of Upland and Taylor Hospital of Ridley Park, plans to shutter the hospitals in 30 days after efforts to find a buyer collapsed. The for-profit owner was hammered in the noon rally accused of stripping the systems of its value and then shutting it down. What they're saying Peggy Malone leads the unionized nurses at Crozer. "Who's going to tell the mother whose child dies of an asthma attack that her child died because we couldn't get close enough to be able to save her child," said Malone. Tom Polizzi is a Crozer social worker. "We should all be angry this isn't a tragedy this is a crime- -failure by design," said Polizzi. Patient advocate Melanie McKendry told the crowd, "We have patients who've called us nonstop distraught begging and asking us where we're going, and we don't have an answer." In a mid-afternoon Texas bankruptcy hearing, a lawyer for Prospect argued that without a new buyer the only option was the orderly closure of the Pennsylvania hospitals. Defending Prospect he said, it did not put profits over patients. Critics disagree. Max Cooper is a Crozer emergency room doctor. "The eyes of Delaware County are set on our elected officials and set on the AG's office. We're hoping you can claw back millions of dollars from Prospect's cold, dead body," said Cooper. What's next Crozer is expected to divert ambulances from the hospital early Wednesday morning. Patients are to be sent to other hospitals with nurses claiming inside they're being pressured to quickly get patients out. Crozer Health deadline to find buyer approaches: "Heading in the right direction"
The Brief Two Delaware County hospitals will remain open until late March after a "short-term" funding solution was announced. The non-profit "Foundation for Delaware County" will provide $7 million to Crozer Health System to help cover operating expenses for one more week. A long-term solution is being sought to continue to provide hospital services. PHILADELPHIA - A plan for Crozer Health to find a buyer looms. However, after a court hearing Wednesday, there might be some good news coming. What they're saying A Texas bankruptcy judge said she was "relieved" Wednesday afternoon after she heard an update about a possible sale of the ailing Crozer Medical System of Delaware County. On I-95 looming above the Crozer Medical Center, a billboard tells the story of the fight to save the ailing health system. Put up by the nurses' union, it warns, "time is running out" to save Delaware County's Crozer and Taylor Hospitals. On Wednesday, some good news came out of a Texas bankruptcy court. Nurses union leader Peggy Malone was asked what she will tell her members about that hearing. "That we'll remain cautiously optimistic," Malone said. "That we'll continue to give great quality care inside this building and take it as a great sign of hope." "Cautiously optimistic" are the exact words an attorney with the Pennsylvania Attorney General told the bankruptcy judge this afternoon about a possible sale of the hospitals to a white knight, healthcare buyer. An attorney for the former for-profit owner, Prospect Medical Holdings of California, told the judge he's "more optimistic" about the possible sale, adding, "they're not there yet." Union leader Malone says 900 nursing jobs hang in the balance. "It's been a roller coaster up and down good news and we hear bad news. Today definitely sounds like good news, heading in the right direction with good news," she added. Prospect, in bankruptcy, had threatened to close the hospitals until an infusion of millions in state, local and foundation cash tossed a temporary lifeline. A source with knowledge tells FOX 29 the talks are focused on a large, Philadelphia-based healthcare provider. The Source The information in this story is from Nurses union leader Peggy Malone and details from a Texas bankruptcy court hearing.
