Taylor Hospital to close Saturday days after Crozer Health shutdown announcement

CBS News25-04-2025
Taylor Hospital in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, will close Saturday morning, days after a federal bankruptcy judge approved Prospect Medical Holdings' plan to close Crozer Health. Friday was the last full day the hospital stayed open.
Employees were told that Taylor Hospital will officially close at 8 a.m. Saturday. Hospital staff said the mood inside on Friday was somber, with some describing it as a funeral.
Only 10 patients remain at Taylor Hospital, according to an employee. The employee said the patients were being discharged or transferred to other hospitals on Friday.
Employees spent Friday cleaning out offices, emptying refrigerators and taking other steps to wind down.
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Stacey Jernigan authorized California-based Prospect's plan to close Crozer Health, Delaware County's largest hospital system, which includes Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland and Taylor Hospital.
Crozer Health closure comes after monthslong effort to save it fails
The decision to close Crozer Health comes after a monthslong effort to save the health system failed. Nearly $50 million was invested in Crozer to maintain its payroll. A $5 million deal between Prospect and Penn Medicine to keep it operating collapsed.
Layoffs of more than 2,600 Crozer Health employees began Friday. Crozer-Chester is expected to close on May 2 — its ER will close on Wednesday, April 30. A Prospect spokesperson claimed earlier this week that the ambulatory surgery and imaging centers at Brinton Lake, Broomall, Haverford and Media will stay open.
Peggy Malone, a longtime Crozer Behavioral Health nurse and president of the Crozer-Chester Nurses Association, said Tuesday that Prospect is moving to close the system "so rapidly."
"We have tried everything we could. We've had so many of our legislators out here to help us save this health system and save these patients. I still, in my heart, don't believe it's over," Malone said. "I still, in my heart, believe somebody is going to help us."
With Taylor Hospital closed and Crozer-Chester next, Delaware County will have only two hospitals remaining: Riddle in Middletown Township and Mercy Fitzgerald in Darby.
EMTs told CBS News Philadelphia the Crozer closure will lead to longer wait times and potentially deadly consequences in Delco.
Delaware County officials declared a disaster emergency to help safeguard public health, continuity of care and mobilize resources to support residents and health care workers.
Prospect plans to put its assets up for auction next week.
Township partners with Narberth Ambulance amid Crozer closure
On Wednesday, when Crozer Health hospitals began diverting patients, Ridley Township partnered with Narberth Ambulance as part of the township's disaster emergency declaration.
The Ridley Township Board of Commissioners announced that Narberth Ambulance will serve as the township's 911 EMS provider, delivering advanced life support services to the township.
According to the board of commissioners, the partnership will provide 24/7 ALS coverage and rapid response times.
The Woodlyn and Holmes fire companies will continue to provide basic life support services, according to township officials.
Main Line Health to hold résumé dropoff at Riddle Hospital
Thousands of workers will be seeking new jobs now that Crozer Health is closing. Main Line Health will be holding a résumé dropoff on Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Riddle Hospital.
People looking for jobs in the health care system can also have the opportunity to speak with someone from its recruitment team.

LA28 making Olympics history with first sale of venue naming rights for Games

Venues for the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics will be permitted to sell naming rights, a first in the Games' storied history. LA28, the organizing committee for the upcoming Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) struck an agreement, which alleviates logistical headaches, cuts costs for the city and helps cover the budget for the Games but also continues the commercialization of an event the IOC has tried to protect over the years from corporate influence. It's important to note, however, that the field of play will remain free of visible advertising. 'Our job is to push and our job is to do what's best for the Olympics in Los Angeles,' LA28 chairman Casey Wasserman told the Los Angeles Times. 'Our job in those conversations [with the IOC] was to explain why this was more than just about money. It was about experience and value and opportunity.' Well-known venues such as SoFi Stadium and Arena will no longer have to adopt generic nicknames or remove existing signage for the Games. Notably, SoFi will host the opening and closing ceremonies along with swimming, and Arena will host gymnastics and boxing in 2028. "People know 'Crypto' as 'Crypto,' they don't know it as 'the gymnastics arena downtown,'' Wasserman said, via The Associated Press, when discussing Arena, the full-time home of the Los Angeles Lakers. For those venues with pre-existing sponsorship names, the companies that currently own naming rights can retain those for the Olympics by signing on as a founding-level partner, according to the LA Times. If they don't sign on, those venues will be renamed without a sponsor, per the LA Times' report. LA28 announced in a release Thursday that up to 19 temporary venues can carry naming rights, with members of The Olympic Partners program receiving first bidding opportunities. Contracts are in place for two of them already: Comcast Squash Center at Universal Studios and Honda Center, the latter of which will keep its name for the Olympic volleyball competition in Anaheim. The LA Coliseum, Rose Bowl and Dodger Stadium are not included in this new naming rights arrangement, according to the AP. But the revenue raised from these deals will prove critical in backing what LA28 describes as a privately-funded Games.

3 charts that show Palantir's astronomical growth over the last five years

Palantir's astronomical rise since its public debut on the New York Stock Exchange in a 2020 direct listing has been nothing short of a whirlwind. Over nearly five years, the Denver-based company, whose cofounders include renowned venture capitalist Peter Thiel and current CEO Alex Karp, has surged more than 1,700%. At the same time, its valuation has broken new highs, dwarfing some of the world's technology behemoths with far greater revenues. The artificial intelligence-powered software company continued its ascent last week after posting its first quarter with more than $1 billion in revenue, reaching new highs and soaring past a $430 billion market valuation. Shares haven't been below $100 since April 2025. The stock last traded below $10 in May 2023, before beginning a steady climb higher. Retail investors are a key part of the stock's strength. Last month, retail poured $1.2 billion into Palantir stock, according to data from Goldman Sachs. Here's a closer look at Palantir's growth over the last five years and how the company compares to megacap peers. Government contracts have been one of Palantir's biggest growth areas since its inception. Last quarter, the company's U.S. government revenue grew 53% to $426 million. Government accounted for 55% of the company's total revenue but commercial is showing promise. Those revenues in the U.S. grew 93% last quarter, Palantir said. Still, one of the company's oldest customers is the U.S. Army. Earlier this month, the company inked a contract worth up to $10 billion for data and software to streamline efficiencies and meet growing military needs. In May, the Department of Defense boosted its agreement with Palantir for AI-powered battlefield capabilities by $795 million. "We still believe America is the leader of the free world, that the West is superior," Karp said on an earnings call earlier this month. "We have to fight for these values; we should give American corporations, and, most importantly, our government, an unfair advantage." The U.S. has been a key driver of Palantir's growth, especially as the company scoops up more contracts with the U.S. military. Palantir said the U.S. currently accounts for about three-quarters of total revenues. Commercial international revenues declined 3% last quarter and analysts have raised concerns about that segment's growth trajectory. Over the last five years, U.S. revenues have nearly quintupled from $156 million to about $733 million. Revenues outside the U.S. have doubled from about $133 million to $271 million. Palantir's market capitalization has rapidly ascended over the last year as investors bet on its AI tools, while its stock has soared nearly 500%. The meteoric rise placed Palantir among the top 10 U.S. tech firms and top 20 most valuable U.S. companies. But Palantir makes a fraction of the revenue of the companies in those lists. Last quarter, Palantir reported more than $1 billion in quarterly revenue for the first time, and its forward price-to-earnings ratio has surged past 280 times. By comparison, Apple and Microsoft posted revenue of $94 billion and $76 billion during the period, respectively, and carry a PE ratio of nearly 30 times. Forward PE is a valuation metric that compares a company's future earnings to its current share price. The higher the PE, the higher the growth expectations or the more overvalued the asset. A lower price-to-earnings ratio suggests slower growth or an undervalued asset. Most of the Magnificent Seven stocks, except for Nvidia and Tesla, have a forward PE that hovers around the 20s and 30s. Nvidia trades at more than 40 times forward earnings, while Tesla's sits at about 198 times. At these levels, investors are paying a jacked-up premium to own shares of one of the hottest AI stocks on Wall Street as its valuation has skyrocketed to astronomical heights. "This is a once-in-a-generation, truly anomalous quarter, and we're very proud," Karp said on an earnings call following Palantir's second-quarter results. "We're sorry that our haters are disappointed, but there are many more quarters to be disappointed."
